Are you talking base layer, or mid layer? There are some great merino wool base layers on the market. I own some but I tend to wear synthetics more often. But synthetics need laundering more often...they will stink quicker than merino wool will.
One thing I've learned about base layers is they aren't created equal when it comes to comfort against the skin. I have several different types/materials of base layers and when I remove them from the washing machine, some come out feeling damp and some come out feeling almost dry. I've learned to wear the ones next to my skin that feel dry right out of the washer. The layer next to skin must feel dry, that's why cotton under layers is a no-no!! Never wear cotton for insulation purposes!
For mid layers, I like something with a little loft to it.

I had high end merano wool and liked it. That was years ago and I shrunk since then.
I used to use polypro unders and really thought they were great... are great compared to cotton. Then I found some that were a Mereno wool blend (poly?) at Sam's club. The price
was super and so is the quality. I've been able to omit a layer and be warmer.
The best layering I have found is to use the silk underwear found in the ski catalogs. Over that, a layer of merino wool finishes out a great system.
Ron, I've been very satisfied with the Minus 33 brand of merino wool base layers. If you have the patience and time, you can find some really good deals on the web for that brand when there are no deals on brands like Smartwool and Ibex. Even a deal on the last two brands is higher than Minus 33. I have their lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight sets. A tip I learned a few years ago is, for some reason, you can buy a set of midweights at almost half the cost of a set of heavyweights. So you're better off buying two sets of midweights and wearing both of them if it's really cold. You then can peel a layer off if you start to warm up.
