Title: Bearpaw german spruce shafting
Post by: Hoosierarcher88 on August 20, 2018, 09:40:08 PM
Anybody here messed with the german spruce wood shafts from bearpaw? Other places ive heard mixed reviews on them but they are few and far between.

the german spruce is nowhere near the quality of the Local Sitka spruce, for starters.
and i believe their quality control is a little lacking, its first grade and second grade shafts all mixed together with no weight sort, just a spine sort. but some retailers may be doing a weight sort as well.
lets see what other folk say

I've bought a couple of dozen to try for my boys (40-45# & 50-55#), and they are ok. Mine weren't weight matched at all, but spine was acceptable. They seem to straighten easy and stain up well. However I did find them to be very light and almost fragile compared to the Douglas Fir we normally use. In fairness though, me and my boys are pretty hard on arrows, we do a lot of roving, shooting sticks, old sheep and cow pooh 😁, grass, hard angle shots etc. We found a glancing shot would break the German Spruce shaft at the point almost 100% of the time. Hard ground was very detrimental to them too. They would probably be fine in just target foam or similar, but unfortunately they are not for me. Price is good if they work for you though.

Best

used them. Ones I bought had a lot of bends in them.
Other than that they held up well

I've used these arrows on a couple of different bows. They straighten easy, and stay straight.  They are not very durable, and I have also found they break right behind the point if they make a slight glancing blow. Nice to mess around with, but I wouldn't hunt with them

Yup, my thoughts exactly, if you are looking for a tough, lighter weight arrow, then use the SITKA, no compromise.
if you are looking for a  heavier shaft, then go with the Firs or Hemlock ( cousin trees). IMHO :)

I bought some from a sponsor here years back. The doz varied 100 grains from lightest to heaviest. I did not find them "light" in weight. The heaviest arrows weighted in at 600 grains with 145 grain points. These are 60-65 spine shafts. Lightest ones are 560 grains. The weight was why I didn't buy anymore. My bow is rated at 55#@28" but I cut my arrows at 29".
Maybe the newer shafts aren't from the same forest as the ones I got?

Dont fix it , if it aint broke :biglaugh:

this is how good Sitka Spruce should perform, the German spruce will not take this kind of abuse, imo
