Title: Bohning clear on carbons
Post by: Ikohlhof91 on June 27, 2018, 10:39:55 AM
Does anyone use bohning clear as a base coat before dipping? Or is it best to just dip with the regular fletch-lac first?

Why not use the clear wrap in case you are applying it to the cresting?

I've used wraps before and can't stand them, i much prefer to crest and dip my arrows. Just playing around with the idea of tying to get the best adhesion to carbon arrows.

I'd much rather dip them in bohning fletch lac

I never tried using clear as a base coat, I always used white for a base then what ever color cap dip, I'm not sure how well a cap dip will cover over clear.  I have used clear on shafts that I wasn't going to dip or crest, it gave better adhesion with fletch tite when putting feathers on.

I've been having some adhesion issues. I'm using my only bohning products, and i was thinkingnif i put clear down first, it would give the cap dip something to stick to

If you're using all Bohning products now, the cap dip will be fletch lac lacquer as well.  Same stuff but with color added. Multiple coats might help adhesion, but if it's not adhering to the carbon now, it is likely to continue to be problematic.

Make sure you are cleaning your shafts good, I use fletch lac thinner before I do any dipping, if you have them good and clean, they will squeak.  Let them dry a few minutes before dipping.

I had issues years ago trying to dip carbons. Can't remember the brand but the shafts had a coating on them to facilitate removal from targets. I wasn't aware of this at time. I couldn't get coverage from any Bohning paints and clear I had. Maybe that has changed? I gave up dipping carbons. I understand some guys go over the shafts with steel wool or fine sandpaper. Maybe try one or two shafts before doing the whole batch. Might cut down the frustration level if you have bad results.

I have had some issues with Carbon Express arrows but Bohning makes a cleaner called SSR and it works so well on the CX arrows
But good clean shafts and you should have no issues with Bohning paint
