Title: Taper tool for 1/4 shafts
Post by: Yolla Bolly on June 04, 2018, 12:33:24 AM
I'm working on arrows for kids.  Both my taper tools only go down to 5/16.  Can't find anything in my catalogs. Any ideas?
Thanks.

I cut off a piece of 2018 and put it inside the 5/16 taperer and was able to get them tapered well enough.

when I was making some bamboo shafts from planting stakes the ends of both sides of the shaft varied quite a lot from one shaft to the other and of course from the front to rear.

I was able to use some small o-rings slipped over the shaft (normally 2 with a little space between) to fill up the gaps between the shaft and the guide sleeves.
Sometimes I had to switch the sleeves and determine which one would fit the best.
Took a little messing around with each shaft but it worked pretty well.

With your shafts being uniform you should be able to find one o-ring size and sleeve size that works together and be golden.

also...
the Tru-Center V2 Taper Tool does have 1/4" guides available from 3 rivers and maybe other places. The 1/4" guide is $5....the tool is $35.
...never used that tool so I can't say how well it works.

It works well.

I cut a piece of 1" wide masking tape about 6" long and wrap it around the 1/4" dowel about an inch from the end needing tapered. The tape can be used for several times before having to get a fresh piece. Once you find the right fit, measure that piece of tape to make getting another good fit quicker to accomplish. This is for a 5/16" taper tool.

I have the Tru-Center tool for 1/4" and it has worked OK for me. Got it from 3 Rivers.
