Title: Strutting Hen Turkey
Post by: Herdbull on May 13, 2018, 03:53:24 PM
Had a tough turkey season. Toms stayed out of bow-range, but eventually got a full fan to come in to 15 yards. I prepared for shot as the full fan tip feathers cleared the ridge. Nice and even. This was not a jake. Tension on string.... but wait....... the head clears the brush..... its a HEN!! [attachment=1] Like I said, tough season. Mike

When I was younger we raised tame turkey. I have witnessed those hens strut on rare occasions. I think maybe territorial reasons. That's definitely a cool pic.

I have seen hens strut and gobble in the fall.

That's pretty neat. She identifies as a tom. Lol. Turkeys season has been tough here as well. I found a way to deal with it though. Take a morning off and go shoot some carp.  :goldtooth:

If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing in your pic, that strutting hen has a beard. If so, she would be legal here! If I saw that bird doing that here, I would shoot her, and have her full body mounted in a full strut!!!!!

That is really cool!!!!

I have shot several bearded hens here in Tx, but never seen one strut like that. Most have real wispy beards. Several years ago, I shot a bearded hen that had a great full beard that was 8-9". I should have mounted that one, but never thought about it at the time.

More pics of the hen. Once I determined it was a hen, I did not think to shoot. I filmed a beared hen once before and you can see her in our film "Essential Encounters".

So very cool.  I agree with Bisch!  A beard makes it a legal bird up here, if bearded I would definitely try to take her myself.  I've shot bearded hens before, but never saw that!
