Title: Where to bowhunt alligator?
Post by: Gdpolk on May 12, 2018, 11:46:10 PM
Alligator by bow is on my bucket list. Archery tackle is not legal for alligator in Arkansas. Where can I go or look to for an area that has a dense population of alligator and is legal for out of state sportsmen to purchase tags? I would love to do a DIY, self guided, or meet up with a local hunt. I'm not really looking for a glamorous movie star experience. I don't care about it being a trophy sized animal. I simply enjoy eating fried alligator and enjoy bowhunting. I would like to try my hand at bowhunting some alligator.

We do tradbow gator hunts in Georgia but it is a quota hunt.  You have to apply for points and it will take you about 3 points to get drawn.  The great part is the application system is FREE in Georgia.

Having said all that, a tradbow gator hunt is an incredible adventure.  The zone that I guide in is one of the most remote areas you may ever hunt. Beautiful tidal marshes and primeval rivers.  It is crazy loaded with gators and it is spot and stalk but with a boat.

Most people have no idea what a true bow hunt for gators is like or how crazy exciting it is.

I shot you an email.  I have a few questions in there. Please shoot back some of the info to me so I can forward it to some other friends of mine. Also I can gladly give you a ring this afternoon too.

I plan to eat it.  Fried gator tail is really fantastic.  I also plan to tan the hide and use it in my leathercraft for knife sheaths and what not.  Also I will either have the skull cleaned/bleached or pluck the teeth out and make a custom leather hatband for my favorite wool outback hat.

Alligator makes one if the coolest euro mounts there is! That is my 11'1", 390# gator from TX. Texas has gators, but I'd bet that you would be better off going east, like Ga or Fl. Mine was all bow, no hook line. The hook lines seem to take all the adventure out of the hunt for me! Mine was big, and although it was not "bad", it did not eat nearly as well as smaller ones I had eaten in the past.

Good luck Garrett!!!

That looks great! We aren't planning to be fishing for gators either. This is a bow hunt.
