Just picked up the April/May issue of Bowhunter and they have a full article written about Roger. Just thought I'd pass that on.
I haven't gotten bowhunter in years probably a decade I've had so much to read here I really hadn't had time to read a magazine maybe someone will post some tributes here
I was getting my ears lowered and they had a copy. I too haven't received any subscriptions in a quite a while. It was well written and thoughtful. I didn't know him except via here.
His son Ryan has some books for sale in the sponsors classifieds if you'd like to read a little bit about his wisdom on deer hunting
His "Whitetail Magic" is a great book
One of the true experts of trophy whitetail hunting and just a hell of a man. Humble and friendly. A man could do a lot worse than patterning his life after Roger's. He will be missed by many.
yeah Charlie it sure would be nice to hear some stories about him from people who shared a camp with him.
He was a big buck hitman for sure!... Not many like him wish I could have met him and talked whitetails.
Talked with him several times on the phone , he'll of a good man he was....

Comptons has an article by Ron Rothaar this month and the PBS magazine will have something as well.
Met Roger and Ron at bear camp at Walters Wilderness Camp in Carrot River SK....great experience spending a week with him and his son. Talking, shooting, hunting...a great memory.
Here's one of Rogers farms that he used to manage that's up for sale just down the road from me. And from the pictures, Roger surely knew how to manage deer here in Iowa. There's some great pictures of him as well as his son here in the listing.

Very impressive and beautiful piece of property!!
It sure is am expensive piece of land. I live right down the road from the property. Roger surely done a great job in managing that piece of land for deer. He will surely be missed by all those who had the opportunity of meeting him.
Thanks for the kind words about father.
As to the farm, couple clarifications, this was his home place and only place he ever developed/managed for deer hunting. Dad was not a wealthy man, he moved to Iowa over 20 yrs ago before "recreational land" was even a concept in the area and land prices were much lower. He was a tool and die maker in a factory in Ohio for 30yrs and took early retirement at 48, in 1986, when I was 12 years old. The only way that worked, and the only way he could buy land, was Mom's "frugality" as she called it. I could have qualified for the free lunch program in high school due to family income level. He was the definition of "land rich" after they moved to Iowa .
This place is really special for deer hunting, not just another southeast Iowa farm. There has not been another place like this on the market that I know of, and I don't think there is another place in that area that compares to the set up. I called it "the zoo" because that is what the hunting is like there. Really.
The realtor didn't use any of the pics I sent him, so there are several other mature bucks killed there not documented on the listing. We (the several stakeholders) are selling the farm for various reasons and it will make someone a great place. I'd be happy to field questions by private message.
Enough of that.... again I want to say we appreciate the support from the traditional bowhunting community and things are generally settling down for us all. For my wife and I mom and dad were our first loss of parents and the back to back timing was shocking.
I need to dig around for some old pictures and scan them in to post. There is really slot of interesting stuff in the dusty old photo albums.
Latest update for us is that Katia and I drove to Ohio last weekend pulling our stock trailer to bring back Dad's moose head mount. This is a 60 inch bull he killed in 1982 or 83 on the Moose John with Jay Massey and Doug Borland. Jim Emerson was on that hunt and killed a bull too, as well as Dick Robertson and Dick Hamilton.

Looking forward to any additional pictures. Thanks for the background on the property. Land like that is a treasure. Best of luck.
Hey Ryan, deepest condolences for your folks passing. Hope that all goes as well as possible for you and your family.
Best regards, Matt (down near Spencer).
