My hunting partner has a bunch of Purpleheart. He uses it to make custom duck/goose calls & asked if I would like some to do a Riser out of. Naturally I said yes, but now I'm trying to figure out what would pair well with it and then envision the combination.
If anyone has or previously had a Purpleheart Bow in their stable, i'd like to see some different combinations if possible?
Much appreciated in advance & Cheers!
I have a Purple Heart riser with black glass and myrtle burl accents. Very nice combo imo
I was in Hawaii some years ago. Saw some bowels made with Koa and PH. I really liked that combo. Just remember the PH will turn color as it ages. UV finishes help retard but been told even they are not forever.
I like bacote with purpleheart, looks great in my opinion.I had a longbow with bacote & purpleheart riser with edge grain red elm limbs under clear glass. It was a beautiful bow, wish I didn't trade it!
Here is an example of purpleheart and bacote in a riser.

I really like the purpleheart Martin Hunters from the early 90's and Deathwish Longbows had a wonderful looking Purpleheart bow at the Coon Rapids shoot last June It's on their facebook page, yea have to scroll down a bit.......some other person put the money down on that one before I could decide one way or the other......saved my a few bucks they did.....

If I could find another at about 40lbs I might buy it....

Didn't have to scroll to far. It gives me an idea of what to expect. Thanks for the photos guys.

Purple Heart and bacote all the way.
I don't have any pictures of it, but the first longbow that I made was purple heart riser and osage limbs under clear glass. The yellow and purple made a pretty combo me thinks. My HS shop teacher asked me to build him one and I let him have it since he was instrumental in getting me interested in working with wood. I still think it was the best one I ever glued up.
I love to pair Purpleheart with Bolivian Rosewood make for one of my very favorite riser combos.

Thanks for the photos gang, really appreciate them.
In my interweb searches, I see/read that PH is better placed in the centre of the riser with a contrasting wood to help create some stability due to PH brittleness. I see de-lam and breakage is mostly on Longbows that haven't been backed.
Anyone have any issues in this regard?
