I'm looking to get a new drum sander. I currently have a performax shop pro 25" single drum sander and want something else. I don't want a belt sander.
I'm looking at the Grizzly 24" dual drum but am not sure if I want a dual drum as I want to change paper quickly when switch from grinding wood to fiberglass. What do you guys recommend for a big single drum sander?
I'd get a wide belt, quicker changes and longer sanding life. I think they have a ten inch one?
I was wrong Chad, it's a drum sander...
Why don't you want to get a belt sander Chad? I can't imagine building bows without one. I think the advantages of the belt far outweigh the drum
I got drum and belt sanders. I know some guys do lams with a belt. Just seems less trouble to use drum sander for that.
I have the grizzly 12" baby drum sander. Does a great job. It uses the hook and loop paper, which is the paper with velcro on the back. The drum has the male velcro on it. All I ever use is 60 grit paper. The sander was around $750 delivered.
I looked up the cost of the wide belt sanders , holy cow batman. Also the sanding belts are 60 bucks..
South, I can't justify the price of one. I'd like to stay under 2000.00. Belt Sanders start at 5000.00.
Anyone have any experience with a wood master drum sander? How about the hook and loop paper that some Sanders require? Is there some give there that may follow the contours of ring porous wood?
My grizzly takes hook and loop paper and it works fine. I purchase all my sand paper at supergrit.com. The hook and loop comes on a roll.

Thanks Roy. This Wood Master 26" drum sander has a single drum, which I like the simplicity of that. Built like a tank, in the USA. The drum speed is 750 rpm instead of the standard 1750 rpm but is powered by a 5 horse power motor. I'm thinking It will create less heat and not gum up so bad. With the power I shouldn't have an issue running the feed rate on high while feeding narrow lams.
Anybody familiar with this machine?
Chad
I have done extensive research on the same sander and numerous videos and I am in the market of picking up this same sander in near future. I like the 5hp motor as well. Well thought out and built in USA
I went ahead and ordered it. I should have it in a couple weeks. It comes highly recommended by a bowyer friend of mine who has used it as a full time bowyer for 30+ years.
Don't know if any of you have every watched Dave Watson's videos on bow making but he has this homemade device he calls a thickness sander. With it he can taper his laminations as well as do simple thickness sanding. He also provides the plans to build your own. Very interesting.
I'm jealous
Wow, Chad that thing looks stout!.. 23 amps 220 volts.. 590 lbs..
It needs a seperate 30 amp circuit all to iself. I'd say you have all you need for sanding..
I see it uses hook and loop sanding paper..
Let us know how it works out. for precision tapers..
