When working IPE board is the quarter sawn board the best or only way to go? Can't find any around where I live so I found some on line but haven't asked it it is quarter sawn. :dunno: Thanks for any help :)
It doesn't make any difference. It is diffuse porous and very dense.
The main things to look for with ipe are no pin knots at all and straight grain. Unfortunately both of these things are hard to read in the dark boards.
Thanks sir and you are right about it being hard to read. Looking forward to giving it a try. Also looking at trilam have seen lots of very nice looking bows with it.
I had a BBI break on me at a pin knot, that I didn't see... check. double check. and then if you rip cut a section of a larger board check the fresh cut side too. (looking at it under bright and direct sunlight helped me scour the rest of the board and realize it was useless...
There are several guys who also sell clean IPE on here too if you cannot find any.
Best of luck.

If you are looking to buy IPE, check with Cody at Tenbrook Archery, he's got everything you need.
Take 0000 steel wool to a surface to get a better read.
Great info and thanks to all for the help
Make sure you wear dust mask and gloves. That stuff made me sick as a dog!
Made the best bow I've ever built though!
From all I have learned about IPE, that is a must for most people. Thanks
It sure messed me up.
Roy, are you sayin that board somehow 'splains you. :) :)
LOL, shud-up.. :)
