A while back I bought the plans from Jim Thorne's Build your own bow 62" take down.
I modified it to a one piece, and I have always liked the look of the glass cut out on the back of the riser.
It will look like a take down without the bolts.
I will also do a footed riser. I am going to use black phenolic 1/16" for the riser.
I'am shooting for 35@28
I had some Curly Walnut and Koa from a build before. So walnut lams and walnut and Koa riser.
I drew it up on the cad program a printed the footed riser templates.
Here a picture of jim's bow.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/78786.png) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/78786.png.html)
Here is the top half of the riser template, but I started with the bottom template.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0750.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0750.jpg.html)
I glued the Paper template to some 3/4" plywood and started sanding to the lines. back and forth checking the fit.
no laser cut templates for me.
I sanded a piece of scrap wood to 1/16" for the templates.
So I got it as close as I could and wrapped my 1/16" piece and buttered the wood templates with smooth-on and clamped it all together for a day.
The glue will fill the voids I have.
I also have to mark the templates THIS SIDE UP and the riser wood also.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0751.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0751.jpg.html)
The dry run looks really good, so I sanded my riser woods with the pattern sander and my new templates and glued it up
The wood is curly Walnut and Koa
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0753.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0753.jpg.html)
The top piece is the walnut and Koa cured and thickness sanded. And the bottom is the rest of the walnut.
I made the second riser template same as before.
I traced the lines and to the bandsaw to rough cut it.
[url=http://http://http://http://http://http://http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0756.jpg.html] (http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0756.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0757.jpg.html)
I thought I had more pictures but here it is all glued and thickness sanded.
I did not have enough walnut so I glued some Pine on top.
All the pine will be cut off after the bow is glued up. more on that later.
While this was going on I made the form for the bow

Going hunting
Look forward to following along.
X2 I always enjoy a build along!
me too
Looking forward to the finished product thanks for keeping us posted!
YOU GOT ME mark. I seen 62" osage and thought man another great self bow under way and a re-curve to boot.
But you guys and your glue do make some sweet looking bow porn.
Looking good, Mark..
I like buildalongs, all of em.
This is going to be fun.
Nice! I'm following...
Thanks guy's
I got my lams tapered last night.
The lams need to be 3-5/8" longer to make it to the center of the riser .244 stack for the take down .254 for the one piece. .003 total taper.
I lined all the but ends up and made a mark on the sides of the lams, my belly lams don't go to the middle of the riser so the lines will let me know how much to cut off the butts, more later on that.
I got the back lams butts feathered and glued butt to butt.
I cut my riser template and sanded as close as I could get.
Clamped down the back glass and taper lam.
I had to put some blue tape in key places to hold the lams down. Also marked the center line on the template
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0758.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0758.jpg.html)
Dry run looks good so I buttered up the template like before with smooth-on and clamped it down on the bow form.
That's all for today
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0759.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0759.jpg.html)
Looks good just started using Black walnut great stuff to sand; quick and painless. :)
Looking forward to this
having made several of Jim's classic takedowns, i will be watching this with interest. They are a nice bow both in performance and appeal.

With the riser and end of limb wedge is 18" of working limb each side. I think the performance will be nice.
I got started early today
I got all the buggers cleaned off the riser template and made a tracing template too. Jim"s take down Limb wedges are .080 per inch and the end of wedge to end of wedge is about 26" so I cut the Riser to length and ran it through the pattern sander
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0778.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0778.jpg.html)
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0760.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0760.jpg.html)
A dry run on the riser Looks really good, so I cut the belly ramps
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0761.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0761.jpg.html)
See the marks at my thumb, That lines up the butt ends of the lam's to keep the stack right. I have plenty on the belly butts to cut back. But first taper the ends of the riser. I made a mark every 1/2" and sanded to the numbers .040,.080.120 ect.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0762.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0762.jpg.html)
I cut the butt ends off and drilled a pin hole into the edge of the riser to keep the belly lams from slipping.
The dry run looks good so it's time for glue up.
That's all for today.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0763.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0763.jpg.html)
Looking good.
Looking great!
I really appreciate the effort you are putting into this build along, it is a great reference as I'm currently putting together my first binghams bow and form.
Question for you. I see that you have some spacers on your steel plates that are holding your form together, my form ended up about 1.75 inches in width secondary to the plywood I used, would it be advisable to not use spacers on when I put my bow on the form for lamination?
The bow press kit (the 1" wide metal strip with 2 3/8" bolts and a 1/2" bolt with a handle) is what you are talking about?
I have 1/2" spacers to get the straps back out of the way of the air hose.
you need some room there, I had to buy longer 3/8" bolts for my 1-3/4" form.
See how the hose is sticking out from the form, that is why.It causes problems if you don't.
You form is the most important thing.
Thanks for looking
Thanks for the information. Yes I am talking about the kit. I have my 1.5 inch wide fromica that was included in my kit glued centered on my form, should I be using tape to secure my stack I the center of this strip? I noticed you have washers on the side of your form is this their purpose?.
if your glass and laminations are 1-1/2"
your form need to be also.
Yes washers on the side
What material is your form made from? I appreciate your advice.
I hate to think I'm gonna need to start over from scratch on my form because I picked too thick of plywood, I have a lot of time invested in it at this point (mine is using the low d/r style from binghams). I couldn't find any ply that was a true .5 at my local shop.
Not trying to hijack your thread I just thought this question didn't merit it's own thread.
Thank you again sir.
Ty
That is what you need to do is start a post, maybe someone lives close to you and can thickness sand it down.
Mine is 1-3/4", 2 pieces 3/4" plywood and a 13/32, I thickness sanded the 13/32 down before glue up.
Don't get in a hurry.
Great info so far. I am going to try your technique on doing the fades on my next bow. Can't wait for more updates and to see this bow glued up.
Ewokarcher - look in your local phone directory for cabinet makers and get on the phone with your problem!
Nice build along Mark.
So I got all the buggers cleaned off a ran the bow through the thickness sander to 1-5/8" wide, sanded the edges and check for limb twist.
I use this setup to get the limb tips right.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0779.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0779.jpg.html)
I have a little twist on one limb.
so I started shaping the the last 8" of the limbs checking for limb twist, every thing is going good.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0764.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0764.jpg.html)
earlier in the week I made templates for the cut out of the back of the riser, one to tape to the bow and the other to clamp the overlays in place for glue up
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0767.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0767.jpg.html)
So I mark the line a cut out with the band saw
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0766.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0766.jpg.html)
see the template laying under the riser
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0768.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0768.jpg.html)
The dry run looks good, black phenolic and Koa.
So smooth-on and in the curing oven.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0770.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0770.jpg.html)
So lookie here this morning I cleaned the booger off the overlays and put a string on.
The tiller is real close. I had some running around and wanted to go hunting today noon -2:00pm saw some does and a small buck.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0771.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0771.jpg.html)
Looking good
Thanks Ben
That's a good looking bow!
Looks great. Thanks for taking the time to take us along.
I guess it's ok.. :)
Some sweet curves there to be sure! Nice work!
I like the style. Cant wait to see the full draw.
Thanks Guy's
You too Roy
I printed off a template for the back of the bow and glued it on
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0772.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0772.jpg.html)
I used my robo sander free hand to the lines and some bur tools the finish the arrow rest. I'am 1/8" past center.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0773.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0773.jpg.html)
I drilled the grip hole with a 1-1/8" Forstner bit.
Traced the grip and site widow and sanded with the robo sander.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0774.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0774.jpg.html)
I wanted to do the rounding over different than I usually do so I made a 2" radius on a piece of poster board and used it shaping the riser Back (half of the bow)
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0775.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0775.jpg.html)
I like the feel in the hand better on this one.
I put a coat of shellac on the riser to show the scratches I missed.
MORE SANDING needed!
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0777.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0777.jpg.html)
Pretty riser.
Nice lines on that riser. Do you want my address so you can send it to me when you're done since the shelf is on the right side for me? :goldtooth:
Gotta say I do like that riser... Make me one please.. :)
It's in the mail
love the template idea for going to the lines. You're too organised for my modus operandi! Liking what I see so far!
I'am removing more wood than I usually do so I made the templates.
Pencil lines don't show up on dark wood and masking tape clogs up the robo sander.
Wow! Really coming along nicely.
Thanks David
I finished the tips last night black phenolic and Koa, and did more sanding on the riser
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0780.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0780.jpg.html)
I been sanding all morning 220 and 320 on the glass.
I'am going to use Al Dean's 2 ton epoxy and Acetone, It's a slow drying epoxy (Gloss)
To hang the bow for spraying I drill a 1/8" hole and SG a 1/8" dowel at the arrow rest where leather will cover it up.
It's about 30 degrees out but my bow room is warm and 35 % humidity.
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b593/osagemark/BYOB/100_0782.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/osagemark/media/BYOB/100_0782.jpg.html)
Can't wait to see it all done....... :notworthy:
I dunno, guess it might be ok. Where is my riser?
It's In the mail roy
I replaced some of the pictures after spraying a Satin finish

Very nice! Looks like a speed demon!
Very nice. Looks awesome
Thanks guy's
Great looking bow
Great looking bow and thanks for allowing us to follow along.
love the braced profile. What brace height do you have on it?
about 8"
Bow looks great!
Good looker Mark!
Great looking bow! On page 2, you mention a pattern sander. Is this a sanding drum similar in theory to a flush cut bit or are you referring to the belt sander pictured? Thanks for the buildalong. Brett
Very sharp, Mark...

A robo sander
Thanks guy's
I am doing some light sanding all over and a last coat of Satin.
Great work.
Awesome work Mark, one problem, the arrow rest is on the wrong side.
Only if you shoot yourself in the face
It turned out really nice, by the way what was the final draw weight, and did you get that twist out of it.
I think he said it was 20# at 28". That's about all he can pull..
It looks like it turned out very well
37@28 yes I got the twist out
Thanks guy's
Not you Roy :D
:wavey: :jumper:
:p
:biglaugh:
Looks like a shooter.
Thanks Mike
You do a lot of footed riser
What is your best (favorite) combo's of wood"s??
This curly walnut is very pretty, the pictures don't do justice to what it looks like.
Thanks everybody for looking!
I like just about all of them. But my personal favorites are zebra wood, walnut, Macassar ebony , cocobolo just to name a few.
I bought a piece of Macassar ebony the other day.
Looks pretty cool.
I have to try cocobolo!
