Osage belly, amber action boo core lams, backed with bamboo. Boo core lams I got from Ole Troy Boy Breeding, Troy does very nice work.. 64" tip to tip, shooting for 40 #. 1 1/4" wide at the flares, and I hold the 1 1/4 width out 6 inches past the flares, then do a straight taper to 1/2 wide at the tips. The bottom limb will be 1 inch shorter than the top limb. The belly lams are Z spliced together, the top limb Osage belly lam is 5/16th thick and the bottom limb Osage belly lam is 1/4 thick. The top limb action boo core lam is 1/4 thick at the riser, tapered to 1/8th at the tip. The bottom limb action boo core lam is 1/4 at the riser, tapered to 1/16th at the tip. I make them this way because I tiller for equal limb timing and since more strain is applied to the top limb while tillering and shooting, the little extra thickness yields a near zero tiller when done. I set my tiller tree up to simulate a predetermined 3/8th high nocking point. Just how I do it, not saying everyone has to make their bows like I do.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/6.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/6.png.html)
I don't Z splice the core lams. Before glue up, I lay everything together, run a string down the center of the boo backing which has been pre cut to the actual bow dimensions. Then clamp it down and I drill 2 holes in the handle area and a hole on each side of the limbs out by the tips. After the glue up, I put tooth picks into all those holes to keep everything aligned.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/8.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/8.png.html)
I flip the tips with heat before glue up, gives the bow a sweet little recurve at the tips.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/9.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/9.png.html)
I wrap the bow with plastic wrap to keep the form and clamps clean.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/5.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/5.png.html)
I use a 3 3/4" center post which I place dead center of the 4" handle, 2 3/4" mid limb posts which I place half way between the flares and limb tips, or maybe even an inch or so closer to the flares for more deflex, and I use 6" end posts. After the bow is clamped down, I measure the height at both tips and adjust the end posts to make them the same height.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/3.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/3.png.html)
I use unibond800 and place the bow in my drying box at about 85 degrees till the next day.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/11.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/11.png.html)
Right out of the clamps.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/12.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/12.png.html)
Next I make a 13" riser and lay the riser on it's side and trace out the curve of the riser section of the bow onto the riser block, then cut it out and glue it up.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/18_1.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/18_1.png.html)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/20_1.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/20_1.png.html)
I don't cut the entire bow out until after the riser block is glued on and dry.
Is that the bow your making me for Christmas Roybert?
Roughed out riser.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/22.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/22.png.html)
I use buffalo horn for tip overlays. I lay the overlay on the tip and trace it out, then sand it flat on the edge sander.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/28.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/28.png.html)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/27.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/27.png.html)
Then glue them on with smooth on. And wrap with rubber bands.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/24.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/24.png.html)
Yes Pearly boy:)
Then I added cocobolo tips over the horn.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/36.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/36.png.html)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/35.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/35.png.html)
Riser cut down to finished profile and she is ready for facets cut in, then tillered.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/38.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/38.png.html)
Might have to wait a few days to start pulling her on the tree, nursing a bum shoulder. Seen an orthopedic surgeon today, had a shot of steroid injected into the shoulder joint. That was better than surgery.. Sucks getting old.. :)
And I sent all my rasps out to Boggs in California to be sharpened, should have them back by Friday I hope...
Cool! That means I have to finish your gift now. :)
Take your time, I want my gift done to perfection.. LOL
getting rasps sharpened- what does that cost- will they do the nicholson rasps that have such a random tooth pattern
Hey now, what about me? Where's my Christmas present?
Hey Peal, I'll cut you cards for it ifn you actually get it!!!!
Oh, and the bow is Looking good Roy.
Wayne, do a search for Boggs tool and file sharpening. They are located in Paromount, California. Prices are very reasonable. Like $6.00 for a 14 inch farriers rasp. They can sharpen almost any rasp. I'm on my cell phone now, I can send you a link for them later today from home PC.
Thanks glittercritter:)
thanks Roy!
No way Randy! Im the son in Michigan Roybert never had :) Poppa Roy is what I call him.
You can pick your friends, but ya just gotta accept your estranged Michigan son. LOL Pearly and I have become good friends through TG. I'm ok with that..
What ever you say "Boy from Pa"!
almost thought I'd see a build along without that nasty coors stuff :readit:
Lookin good Mr. Painter
getting thru a complete rotator tear right now. Shoulders are a pain. Hope you're getting along okay
Really? Another Roybert trilam build? I had to double check the posting date as I thought this was an old thread someone drug up.
:saywhat:
Hey glittergirl, knock it off.. :)
File sharpening web link..
http://boggstool.com/page74.html
Canopygirl, I only make bows in the fall, winter, and spring. Too much crap to do outside here in the summer.
And I thought you might send one north for a change Roy. sad ... But I guess I'll still watch.
Very good Roy. Let's see that tillering process again. Bue--.
Looking good, Mr. Fancy Lams. :)
Wow Roy, you do give the impression that you know what you're doing.
And I've said it before, with these multi-lamination bows you're only one ingredient different than me and "Conopygirl".
heh heh heh, don't mention that 'gl$#s word John!!
Roybert will get upset!
Glass has it's place I suppose. But not in my shop..
I like it for windows mostly.
I always enjoy a Roy build along! Thanks for taking the extra time and effort to share with us.
youre in for a pleasant surprise Chris- which i am sure you are well aware off!!
but his bows are mighty fine shooters!
I already have one Wayne, and yup they are nice sticks. I was picking on the ol' coot. I'd be surprised if it showed up at my door!
Thanks for the Build along Roy. Hope your shoulder is feeling better.
THIS IS ROYS BOW.....
THIS IS ROYS BOW.....
LOL
I didn't make myself a bow last year because I was mentoring two new guys all winter.. Hain't gonna happen this year....
Thanks Lee.. Shoulder is feeling pretty spiffy today...
:)
I guess it's OK
I heard that somewhere
:)
:bigsmyl:
Lookin good Roy! Hang in there with that shoulder.

I'm calling BS. I've seen glass in your shop. You just don't show it off. I also notice that your favorite bow when it comes time to hunt is a glass creation:
I think you really do like glass bows, you just don't have the guts to get glass bow construction splinters in those delicate fingers...
YEAH!! What "Canopygirl" said
i don't know about that Canterlever Boy, Roy looks like he has plenty of guts in that photo!!!! :bigsmyl:
Cantaloupe girl, yup that's my favorite bow, bought it new in 1971, makes it older than you. It has put quite a few bucks on the ground over the years. And when are you stopping by to visit again? I can't wait to smack ya up along side your head. Bring squeaky with ya, I'm gonna smack him too.. :)

LMAO!!
Roy, I'm working on getting up your way. Life and work have just been crazy the last couple of months. Need to see that big pup!
She will be 1 year old Nov 14th.. Pushing 70 #.. She is so proud of the turkey feather she found, LOL..
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/anniefeather.png) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/anniefeather.png.html)
You guys are a wild bunch. :biglaugh: Nice dog.
fine looking dog sir!!
guess that one dis-proves the theory how owners look like their dogs :biglaugh:
yeah....... she's too good lookin to be Roy's :wavey:
They say dog owners begin to look like their dogs........or is it the other way around? If so, I feel kinda sorry for the dog. :)
:biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Good looking dog.
Roy - After you take your bow out of that fancy heater and the glue is cured does the tri-lam bow need re-hydrating just like a self bow?
Not really.. It's only in there 24 hours at 80 to 85 degrees. And by the time I get it cut out and the horn tips on is another day or two. So it may be 3 days or more till I start tillering it. I never gave it much thought to be honest..

I just wanna know why Roy's bow has the pink fuzzy tip??
:biglaugh:
I think canopyboy should bring along some glass and lams and show you how it's done next time he stops over, Roy.
And I know he can't resist that invitation: "Come over so I can smack ya one." That's some hospitality. :D
McKenzie, I got one nerve left and your standing on it, BOY.. :)
Please god deliver my rasps so I can get on with this bow tillering....
You tiller with rasps?
I thunk you turned over a new leaf,buster! :D
Hey Royboy when you were younger and first bought that bow were you taller than it? :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Roy, have you ever used a bamboo backing strip that was cut in half for shipping? If so must it be spliced or butted together?
I keep checking this thread for some progress, but nuthin' :(

I'd be curious to know this too.
Only person I've ever seen do it was Sam Harper when he built a bow backed with bamboo shipped from Asia. IIRC he scarf spliced it together, but it was also a relatively thick riser that had a powerlam, and the splice was not in the sight window area .... Again IIRC.
The empty Coors Light cans have asked me to not respond to this thread tonight....

:biglaugh:
Ben there is no problem splicing backings. I used to do it all the time with elb's and they worked slightly in the handle. I used a simple v-splice and never had a problem. A scarf splice could of course fail and it would be more likely to than a v-splice.
Pretty much all composite hornbows use v-splices and the splices aren't what breaks.
Roy - hope your rasps turn up soon......
Yes I have spliced boo backing together. I used a 2 inch z splice.
Thank you, hope to build one of these tri lam bows one of these days.
Wow, there is a lot of piling on Roybert in this thread. Poor guy is going to think we don't love him or something.
I called Boggs and asked them to delay shipment, just so we could pester Roy a bit more. :wavey:
I'll get even... :)
Roy,
Will osage pin knots affect a trilam as they do a selfbow? My billets have a few that I don't think can get around.
Depends on the grain cut. I use 1/4 or rift sawn boards. You don't want a pin knot running across the belly laterally. I always seek out the best piece of wood I can.
Well Boggs called, my rasps are done. They took my credit card # over the phone. Should be tillering the bow by Saturday. I'll start a new thread for the tillering since so many of my good friends have chimed in here and stretched this thread out to 5 pages of harassment... LOL :)
Imagine if you had enemies!
Oh, now we're all "Friends"!?!?
Wasn't talken bout you, glittergirl.. :)
WHEW !! Thought my smart mouth was gonna get me on that Thumpin List again... :scared:
I keep checking this thread thinking I'd see some progress, but nuthin other some excuses about some rasps.
Roy - Maybe you have an extra rasp you've lost in your sock drawer. (LOL - remember Hova  )
all i remember was his painted toe nails- and the myriad of creative excuses!

It's really more like a weak massage than a thumpin.
:knothead:
Roy, could you also glue the riser up at the same time you clamp up the lams?
Nice side profile.
If you really wanted to, you probably could, but it would change the deflex of the bow having a long 13" riser in there at glue up. Depending on where I place the mid limb posts decides how much deflex I get. So each glue up could yield a little different arc in the bows riser section before I put the riser block on. Putting the riser block in at the same time is going to keep the center of the bow more flat, and not let that area bend.
Might get away with gluing a riser at the same time if you used numerous thin slats that would bend easily. It would still straighten the riser section, but not nearly as much. Just a thought.
Hey Roy - You get them rasps yet???
Ha, they called again, seems they mailed the wrong rasps. So when that package gets here, I have to refuse it, and my rasps are in the mail. I just laughed.
That the picture of canopygirl ya took last time he was at your house? LOL
:banghead:
Well I had the third phone call today from Boggs. The lady was nice and apologized. We exchanged email addys so we can get through this tracking thing. The wrong package is due here Monday and MY Rasps are due here Tuesday... Was just a little mistake on her part, ya know how women are! :)
So I'll be working on this bow come Tuesday night I suppose. SO get off my butt Squeak-ah-boy.. You are bad as Canopy-girl.. :)
just make sure you refuse the correct package..
..Hate to have your's show up earlier than the wrong one..and end up refusing your own stuff...lol
LOL
Be easy, wrong package is 14 # and mine is 4 #. But Hey, might be more rasps in the 14 pounder.. LOL
lol...yeah..good thing you're a straight shooter.
"Was just a little mistake on her part, ya know how women are! [Smile]"
Yeah, she just called me and asked if I knew you......
I said Roy who???
Wait....
Is Roy gettin your stuff Kenny?
Nope, I just know the girl....
oh..ok
Thinking it was a small world type thing....lol
I have a Shinto you can borrow? ;)
Keep it, I don't like em.. :)
Well, Roy, if she follows this forum you will never see your rasps again :biglaugh:
hell hath no fury...like a woman scorned!
Thanks Roy your rasps arrived today (at my house as I requested). I've been rasping on my Rat Rod frame. They are getting dull, do you want me to forward them on or send them back for sharpening.
Please reply!!!!!!
Got a little work done on the tri lam. It's braced to about 2 inches in this picture and video. Notice the pull rope staying on the line in the photo at 11 inches.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/20151108_093508.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/20151108_093508.jpg.html)
But in the video below, as I was working it down to 12, then 13 inches, it's starting to drift about 1/8th" to the right of the line. That means the top limb to the right is stiffer than the bottom limb and needs some wood removed. I'll not pull any farther than 13" till I get the pull rope towing the line again. Won't take but a few scrapes with a scraper to get it back on track. Notice how still the bow is sitting in the cradle as I pull it. Means it's balanced pretty darn well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWFJ7e7DlVc&feature=youtu.be
I have a long way to go :notworthy:
Thanks again for sharing
How was it again Roy? What is the distance between the lines and how far above the bows center are you pulling?
3/4" above center of bow for three under tillering on this bow, which has a 3/4" shorter bottom limb. You just need to figure where the center of your middle finger will be on the string when you shoot the bow and place the pull rope there.
Got it to 28" last night, 43# there. It will lose a couple pounds with final sanding and shooting in. I was shooting for 40#.

Good job Roy
Nicely done Roy! How well would black walnut work for a belly. May try another tri lam after the multiple failures I've had recently with these
It will work but Osage would be sweet. Ya have any 1/4" thick lams of Osage? That's all you need for the belly lam, then a 1/4" thick core lam and then the boo.
Nope I don't believe that I do. I have had a hard time finding some osage lately.
I'll hook ya up..

It is Ok, I guess
It's looking good Roy. You've got tri-lams down to a science.
Yer gettin better old man. Took ya long enough.
Still a few things I'd do different though.
Thanks Mr. Mentor.. :)
So lay it on me, what would ya do different?
You're officially weaned. You're on your own.
Roy,
In between all the ribbing your taking, I missed how thick your bamboo backing was. Can you fill me in on that?
Warmest regards
homebru
Weaned? Dat mean I gotta buy my own beer now? :)
Bamboo is 1/8 at the riser tapered to 1/16th at the tips.
Happy birthday to your little pup Roy!
Roy do you need any of the lams to be tapered at all? I got some bamboo lams that have some tapers for core lams... I can hook you up with some of those? Or some riser material
Boo tapered lams is cool, thanks Justin. Yup Annie is 1 year old today...
Ah crap.. Annie just turned one today, now momma is looking into a male chocolate lab 8 week old puppy online. Ya know what this means? Means we are gonna have another puppy in the house, real soon. I just shake my head and smile. Women.....
...And old men...
Not bad for a an old buzzard with a bum shoulder, two bad eyes......and a hot wife..... :)
You okay Roy? Did you get a sliver or sumthin??
Maybe you're heading to Minnesota to get a new pup :saywhat:
Roy
I found me some Poplar for backings like you said

hey lookum- a pic of a Roybow!
Bow is fine, but my shoulder is hurting more and more, so I can't pull the bow to shoot it in. See the Orthopedic Dr. again Dec 1st. Most likely will get an mri and then surgery..
Bow looks nice Mark.. :)
Ship it over. I'll wrap it up for you and send it back.......crippled old buzzard anyway.
Just keep raspin' on it until you can pull it. No reason to make it stronger than your bum shoulder -- you'll never be able to shoot it.
Weight isn't the biggest problem. I can hardly raise my arm up when I bend my elbow like to draw a bow. Funny thing is though, I can move my arm all over the place and it doesn't bother me. Just hurts when the elbow is cocked as if to shoot.
I know how that feels.
Just get it fixed Roy. After 3 months you'll be pulling 30#. Almost your huntin weight aint it ?!??
Roy sorry to hear about the shoulder. And heck I can always use another one of your bows. Mine is an older model just 2 Osage and boo. Funny thing it still is the bow folks like most when I am showing off my bows.
I wouldn't trade it or any of the others I have received for anything.
Get well soon and start massaging I mean thumping folks again. :bigsmyl: :archer:
That's a bummer Roy. Get it fixed, rehabbed, and get this this build along done.
It was done tillered on page 7 John. Just needs shot, then tiller check, then stain and sealed.
Sorry to hear that Roy. My dad (70's) had same issue, could move his arm all over the place except for one direction. If I remember right it was also holding it straight out in front of him. He could still drink a beer though.
Oh I think he also had trouble wiping his butt, you got that problem?
I feel for you Roy, having an injury that stops you doing what you love is a nightmare. I've been there and got that t-shirt.
I'll send you some positive vibes across the pond. :)
What is wrong? Rotator cuff?
Thanks guys. The orthopedic Dr doesn't think it's a rotator cuff. She showed me on the xray that the shoulder socket has a very narrow gap on the top where the arm bone fits in the socket, and it's inflamed. She put a shot of cortisone in 3 weeks ago. That helped for about a week. Now it's feeling worse. She said if it doesn't get better, then an mri and possible surgery to trim the socket and open up the narrow gap on top. Won't know for sure till she reads the mri.
Hope everything works out for ya bud.
Prolly from shooting them heavy 40 lb bows all them years. You better start making em a little lighter... or just get a crossbow.
Hang in there Roy. Hope they figure out the problem and get you fixed up. I have pain in my shoulders, too, but it comes and goes. I think it may be arthritis. At least I don't worry about the bow when I hear little cracking sounds anymore. I know it's just the shoulder.
Wait I have one question now that I think about it. If it only hurts when you bend your elbow and lift how in the heck do you drink that horse pee you call beer? Hmmmmmmm.
Get well soon and I hope it does not have to go to surgery.
If it only hurts when you bend your elbow and lift how in the heck do you drink that horse pee you call beer? Hmmmmmmm.
A straw Roy, a straw.....
Get healed up bud!
Get er done Roy!
Get well soon Roy.
Dave.
hope you get around that shoulder Roy! Shares in cheap beer will plummet if you can't get it fixed! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:

Ok glassy bow boy..
I think you meant "Classy" bow boy.
Ouch!!! Look out Roy, me thinks they is trying to dis ya.
Well when they are picking on me, they are leaving everyone else alone... And you know Troy, I never mess with anyone in here.. :)
:jumper: :jumper:
Well it's all done, except I can't shoot it. Tried a week ago and that about killed the shoulder. MRI scheduled next Monday. I'll have my buddy draw it tomorrow night so I can take a full draw picture.

Good luck on the shoulder bud.
Looks nice and lean
Looks terrific, Roy. Hope you'll be shooting it soon.
Turned out very nice as usual. Bue :)
Good luck with the shoulder Roy. Bow looks great though.
Messed my shoulder up for the second time this year. Last time I was out of shooting for 8weeks, this time hopefully less. The scary part is when you haven't done anything really strenuous to damage it, just everyday stuff.
Roy - your bow crafting is amazing. I pray that you regain full use of your shoulder and arm - pain free and back to full power very soon.
Nice Bow Roy. Good luck with your shoulder!

Hang in there Roy!! Very nice bow.
Looks sweet, Roy. The flipped tips look great.
Hope the MRI went well
That's a beaut! Prayers for a speedy recovery on that shoulder!
Thanks. The MIR was like a bad dream. 30 minutes stuck back into a 2 foot tube where I could barely lift my head because after I was in there, the damn top tilted down and almost touched my legs. I closed my eyes and talked to myself. Said you can do this tuff guy. LOL
Well I sure hope they can fix your shoulder after that.
You do build a nice bow Roy.
Dave.
How is the new bamboo performing?
Dave.
Maybe, just maybe...... it could have been the oversized cranium in the first place
They'd never got me in that unless they drugged me good which they did when they scoped my shoulder. Glad you survived without too much trama.
Roy be glad it wasn't your wrist...
You have to lie on your front with your hand out in front like superman flying! Oh and don't move or else they have to do it again!
I've had 4 mri's now and I just fell asleep for the last two...the nurses had to shout at me to get me to wake up after!
Ya know how hard it is to hold back a cough while laying on your back? Then my lip had an itch, so I stuck my tongue out to get that, LOL.. But I kept telling myself that this shoulder has been hurting for 5 months and I gotta get through this test.... SO I started running through the thumping list for trad gang in my mind, that took me clear through the test. LMAO.. :)
Roy, I hope that your shoulder heals quickly, so you can get back to building and shooting those beautiful bows you make. Great job on this one by the way.
That's too funny that running through your thumping list helped get you through the test.
On behalf of the guys who have made the list...You're welcome! :D
