Title: Any tricks to sanding riser to fit form?
Post by: Kopper1013 on March 11, 2015, 11:49:00 AM
I'm just having a heck of time sanding my riser so it fits the form without any light coming through. I sand a high spot then place in form and there's another spot. I feel like I'm just chasing my tail.
Do you guys have any tricks? I have it really close but close ain't  perfect.

I am assuming you are fitting the back side of the bow to the form?

Will you be adding an overlay to the back side of the  bow? If so I have in the past used painters tape to build up the form to make a stubborn riser fit. If for some reason you get a slight dish in the bow an overlay will cover it up.
If you are using more than three layers of tape to fix a gap you may want to do some more sanding.

You could use double sided tape and tape down some course sandpaper facing up in the curve of the form. Then put your riser in there and wiggle it back and forth till it matches the form. Worth a try.

Ben has a good idea I have done that very thing. If it is in your riser a long flat block should remove high spots.

I made a sanding jig for my kennym d/r longbow form..it gets riser pretty darn close. Then if needed I can do the tape trick like rmorris during dry run.

I saw someone on here cut some lam's and glass about 2" longer than the riser.( a stack about 1/2" thick)
Put half of your bow stack on the form. cover with plastic wrap. then
glue up the riser stack(template)  in the form with the air hose, after curing, use that on a piece of plywood as a template to sand the riser template.

I did it the other day and it work like a champ.
Double side tape my stack and a 2x4 to a 3/4" piece of plywood.  run that threw the thickness sander.
flip that over and use your pattern sander to make the template.
