I am new to archery and also new to this site. I would like to learn how to make my own bows. I saw where bamboo flooring would be good please help!!!!
Jeff.............
Bamboo flooring is mostly used for making glass bows. If you are looking for bamboo for a wood bow you will need bamboo slats. You can order unfinished vertical bamboo from: Hawa Bamboo Flooring.
James
Which of their products are best for used to grind lams for glass lam and/or all wood lam bows.
You can find the horizontal laminated bamboo at most box store building supply places. The vertical is a bear to find. I have to order the vertical in from out of state. Shipping is expensive.
Lumber Liquidators has vertical and horizontal bamboo baseboards in stock. They measure: 6 foot long X 3 1/2" tall and 5/8" thick. I can easily build 2 longbows or 3 recurves from each piece.
Jeff, if your looking to build a wood bow I suggest finding a nice tree to cut, and buying a red oak board or two for working in the meantime while your staves dry.
In OH you probably have Osage somewhere. Most hardwoods can make a nice bow though so don't get hung up if you can't get the yeller
If you want glass bows, someone else will need to help cause I'm illiterate
Thank you guys for the posts. I want to eventually build glass but for right now I am going to get started with board bows till I can afford to build a bench and everything I need. All of your guys input is awesome I will re-post once i can break free and get something built!!

How do I just find a tree to use? I have never done that. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Best done in the dark of night and outside your own neighborhood! :biglaugh:
Found a Lumber Liquidators nearby so I'll be checking out their inventory.
natural interiors or timbergrass in Cincinnati had it a few years ago. they had 6 foot by 3/4 board for stair tread in both arrangements.
Monterey
Now that's some funny stuff right there!!
troy
that is some good stuff you got. Great work
Jeff3 -- if you want to build simple board bows, go to Poor Folk -- poorfolkbows.com and follow his directions for making a Red Oak board bow from common Oak boards available from Lowe's and Home Depot.
After you've built a bow or two; and gotten some experience both in bowbuilding and archery in general, then we can talk you through building some simple, inexpensive wood-fiberglass bows.

This is sound advice.
I would recommend the Traditional Bowyers Bible series. All four volumes are good, but volume one will get you through selecting woods, cutting, seasoning and tillering selfbows and board bows.
That sounds like a plan guys as soon as I get something built I'll be back
