I gotta get this all done up before April cause I may have a lot more work to do then at my job!
So I've been thinking (usually not good) about this forward handle longbow, and like Thad I just took all the attributes I thought would be good and kind of rolled em together.
Here we go, and PLEASE add your tips, questions , and observations as we go!
Here is half a bow drawn out for the Nth time! :D
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0079_zps62945bb6.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0079_zps62945bb6.jpg.html)
Once I got the profile I hope to like, I put the template plywood under the paper and with a small screwdriver, mark thru the drawing plan(if you can call it that)..
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0080_zpsc8ce88ef.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0080_zpsc8ce88ef.jpg.html)
Now to connect the dots , or marks in this case...
I used a piece of 1/16" phenolic to get the curves nice and smooth..
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0081_zpsb7522a1a.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0081_zpsb7522a1a.jpg.html)
To the bandsaw and cut out, leaving plenty, it sands to the mark easily...
Note the centerline is an inch from the end of template,so you can run the router a fuzz past center....
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0083_zps87a9aef4.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0083_zps87a9aef4.jpg.html)
To the belt sander and lightly sand so it doesn't dig in and make dips, light touch is good!! Do the inside radius on the idler drum end...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0084_zpsd5158301.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0084_zpsd5158301.jpg.html)
Hand sand with a block til it looks and feels good and smooth, no dips or bumps...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0085_zps9d5a6e08.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0085_zps9d5a6e08.jpg.html)
Hard to bend the phenolic around the curve , hold it, and take a pic, so used the drill to help, about 2" left of the drill is a slight flat spot. Sorry the pic doesn't show it better. Gotta teach Zwickey to take pics!! LOL
More hand sanding on the template fixed it. Bend something around the curves and the bumps and dips will show themselves. They will also show in a bow limb if you don't catch em now!! :scared:
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0087_zps7f9132d5.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0087_zps7f9132d5.jpg.html)
Now to cut the form blank pieces, make sure they are wide enough to get the form out of , bigger curves take bigger pieces. This is 12" wide, I like at least 4" to the edge of form.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0089_zps54203735.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0089_zps54203735.jpg.html)
Here I have marked the template on the form pieces so I don't get any screws in the cut and router line. Buuut made a mistake and marked it too close to the one edge, so just moved the screws away from line.....
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0090_zps382e0516.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0090_zps382e0516.jpg.html)
Thanks for the build along Kenny this will be very helpful and informative I'm sure... Can't wait to follow this one
Plywood is always curved, so turn em to help take it out. I had to add a .110 pc of plywood in center that I sanded to thickness to get 1.5" plus just a little, the glass I checked was .010 oversized width.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0091_zps02c31401.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0091_zps02c31401.jpg.html)
I clamped it to the bench and was surprised to find it was good and flat end to end and corner to corner...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0092_zps1a50985e.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0092_zps1a50985e.jpg.html)
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0093_zpsb2411ce0.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0093_zpsb2411ce0.jpg.html)
Ready to glue/screw together.... Remember, no screws where the router will run!!
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0094_zps852fbb85.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0094_zps852fbb85.jpg.html)
Glued, screwed and tattooed. Bandsawed on waste side of line I marked an A on both pcs to keep everything matching each other...
I also mark the waste side of line to cut, don't even ask why!!
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0096_zps07cbe7e0.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0096_zps07cbe7e0.jpg.html)
Template screwed onto form, and clamped to bench for safety, you have to push down on router to keep bit square with face of form...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0097_zpsfeaf670b.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0097_zpsfeaf670b.jpg.html)
Here you can see why the inch past center on template, gives the router bearing a place to run so you can get to center. Make sure the template is good and flush at the centerline when you flip to other end...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0098_zps4feb78c7.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0098_zps4feb78c7.jpg.html)
The pattern bit that runs against the template. Carefully adjust so the bearing rides good on the template.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0099_zps9ad5e4c3.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0099_zps9ad5e4c3.jpg.html)
After routing and sanding lightly with the block, I used contact cement to put a .030 glass on the form...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0100_zpsb520d4da.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0100_zpsb520d4da.jpg.html)
Planning an 18" riser, I marked the form 9" each way from center. With an 18" pc of ply for a pattern, I found that the riser block will have to be 3 1/8" deep.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0101_zpsaf4818f5.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0101_zpsaf4818f5.jpg.html)
Marking the pattern for riser back...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0103_zpsda090e60.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0103_zpsda090e60.jpg.html)
And marking the belly of riser. I wanted 1.75" total depth on grip, so I made the actual riser 1.5" deep, and with back overlays should put the lams right at the grip low spot...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0104_zps3d2b1894.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0104_zps3d2b1894.jpg.html)
That's all for today! :)
Forgot to say, the template is for one half of the bow. Make it an inch past center of your drawing, then mark that inch line all the way around the template. do one end, then flip to other end and screw the center line hole first back in same hole on form. End up with identical limbs on both ends of bow...
Looks sweet! I really like the curves...BeauJ
Lookin' good Kenny. I can't wait to see the first bow off of it.
Can't wait for this one Kenny Looks great so far.
Looking in Kenny. Thanks for doing the build along for the form. Josh
Thanks guys, I'm a bit worried about how the limbs will come off the deep deflex in riser tho....
If I miss anything, bring it to my attention and I'll try to edit it in there!
Oh man I'm really liking the looks of this one here Bud. with those curves she looks dangerously sexy. Tuned in for sure.
Im liking this... :campfire:
Kenny I use software that I enter the dimensions then it will show how the design will bend. Here are some links to the screen shots. They are too big to show as an image and still be able to see detail so I'm only adding a link.
Data page (http://i.imgur.com/7cSK7by.jpg)
Results page (http://i.imgur.com/p0Fscrf.jpg)
With this excel spreadsheet you enter the width, thickness, and distance from the belly and centerline. Then it calculates the bending stress and shows more information than any geek could want. BTW this was designed by Allen Case who is a flight shooter.
I've used this and found that some of my forward handle designs wouldn't work because they had too much deflex/reflex
Thanks Galen, I haven't exceeded what some of the others in production have done, so hopin they will be OK!!
Going to enjoy seeing this develope
Perfect timing Kenny! I started a form during my evening time this week with a very similar profile - show me the way!
Got the form done today, need some wax now....
Also made the lams and cut out a riser and have it close to being fitted to form.
Will load some pics tonite and tell the rest of the tale!
then on to the bow tomorrow, have Monday off. Hopin for a 62" forward handle about 50# @ 28"!
Fun to watch a master at work! Thanks for bringing us along!
Very informative!! thanks for putting in layout and the forum build

Now with the 2 form pcs on the bench, we make sure we have 1 1/8" max all along the form. Then I put a strip of ply on both ends to hold in place...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0112_zps7c6b64fa.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0112_zps7c6b64fa.jpg.html)
And check square across centerline, and put a pc on there also to keep top and bottom form centerline lined up...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0113_zpsaa71cda3.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0113_zpsaa71cda3.jpg.html)
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0114_zps9ba5b794.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0114_zps9ba5b794.jpg.html)
Only one place on this form bout 8" on one end where I got wide from line. Probably should try to stay right on line and have help to catch the form coming out of bandsaw! This form ran the same all the way after cutting top and bottom apart, some will require trimming no matter how careful you cut...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0106_zps07be4b7f.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0106_zps07be4b7f.jpg.html)
Here is only spot that needed trim. BTW-- the top form that the airhose is against doesn't have to be sanded smooth.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0107_zps02455a6f.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0107_zps02455a6f.jpg.html)
Now to make room for the riser, I lay something in the gap slightly thinner than the form so I can put the riser up against the bottom of form and mark the top...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0108_zps92a18938.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0108_zps92a18938.jpg.html)
With the riser pattern in place, mark the 1 1/8" around the riser template...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0109_zps6f8c90a3.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0109_zps6f8c90a3.jpg.html)
Cut to the line and you have your riser area done..
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0111_zps1c41b6c6.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0111_zps1c41b6c6.jpg.html)
Now to the hardware(which I robbed off a form that had one bow made on it!!)I like to leave a little room from end of riser so I can see what is happening there when gluing up. Then space the other set out as you like.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0115_zps7b5e7b84.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0115_zps7b5e7b84.jpg.html)
I draw a centerline for bolt holes and drill the 1/2" hole about 1/2" deep so I can stick a bolt in it while I drill the other 2. Then start the other 2 - 3/8" holes about 1/4" deep. Then drilled a pilot hole in all holes with a 1/4" bit and a 1.5" square steel block I had drilled for TD limbs with a press.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0116_zpsf62623d0.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0116_zpsf62623d0.jpg.html)
Then drill all the 3/8" holes , put the straps on with 3/8" bolts in to be sure and get proper bolt spacing. This keeps your form gap right. Now drill the 1/2" holes.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0118_zps9218e179.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0118_zps9218e179.jpg.html)
Make some spacers to keep the straps off the form, these are 5/16" thick but it isn't critical.
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0119_zpse2b19f9e.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0119_zpse2b19f9e.jpg.html)
Put all the straps on and stand form up to assemble the other side with spacers and straps...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0120_zps2f8de794.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0120_zps2f8de794.jpg.html)
Take off the temporary plywood pcs at ends and she is ready. I have to go to town and get wax before I can lay up the first bow, but I have the riser 75% ready and lams and glass ready to go! Will glue her up tomorrow and work on it more next Friday!!
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0122_zpse8aafad0.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0122_zpse8aafad0.jpg.html)
Another mistake, but will still work is I usually put the straps on so the straps stay on top piece. Just handier to put plastic on form.....
Looking really good.... :campfire:
It is looking very curvaceous Kenny! Think it will turn out a beauty!
so now the real question, kenny...are you gonna offer this new template for sale too?
put me on the list if you do! :D
I thought you were done building bows! :)
Will be very interesting to see how this turns out. Bue--.
Kenny, thank you from all of us for the time and effort you take in posting these buildalongs and photo's. You just save us many hours with this form build. Oh and thank you for the longbow plan's you posted. That is a very kind gesture.

Nope, out of the biz, but will gladly share it if I can talk Ben(or someone) into doing it again if it turns a decent bow!!

Nah, just closed the biz til I have more time to do it. I never sold bows after the first few requests back in the early 90s! Built a few for family and buddies...
You're welcome Willem! Have fun with it, archery is a good addiction! :D
Glued up this morning, be done cooking in an hour, but with cooling down and back to work, probably won't work on it til next weekend....
Glueup was easier than I expected with the big deflex in handle area, not bad at all! The riser looks a bit little to hold # but guess every bow is that way in the grip area!
awesome- will be watching this everyday!!!
really looking forward to seeing this one
Here is what held me up on progress yesterday, then the store held me up for it! $7.48 for that!!
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0124_zps0f478e2f.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0124_zps0f478e2f.jpg.html)
Here finishing up the riser, had to use the corner of my backer block because of the shape of it, worked quite well!!
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0125_zps4ea0811c.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0125_zps4ea0811c.jpg.html)
Looks little and fragile, huh??
Think it will hold a 50# bow?
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0126_zps5d4da9ff.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0126_zps5d4da9ff.jpg.html)
Then I cut the lams to length and blew off the dust, glued the mess together and put it on the form. The deep deflex went together better that I was expecting. I just used some scrap plywood to hold all on the form before I inflated the hose.
I cut back on glue, when Chad Holm was here hunting, he looked at a bow I am helping a bud build and commented I use LOTS of glue.... :biglaugh: So I cut back a bit!!

I promise to clean up my mess of a shop soon!

Oh, it is an awood riser, it was handy and if it works will get camo painted anyway. I hate black glass but didn't wanna use any of my clear til I know it will make a decent bow. Didn't want to take time to glue one up anyway.
The bow I hunted with this year is camo painted and worked great! :D
Natural aboo lams full length. Kind of tricky on the superlam without making a new long sled, but worked out OK....
Black .040 uls glass
Smooth-on epoxy
Dang man I really want to make one of these. I love the forward handle looks with these designs. Awesome Job!!!
Looking great. May I ask what taper rate you used? Bue--.
Boy Kenny you have started something here. Looking good. Full length lams, tapered and everything, even the superlam full length. WOW! :coffee: :coffee:
Bue, it has .003 total but the .001 has a builtin powerlam and tip wedge.
David, the other bows I've built didn't have the big swoopy deflex in riser, and also the belly lams were all stopped before the center. So short pieces worked well!
I was afraid the CA joint in 2 pc lams would give out under the riser during glue up. That isn't a mess I wanted to deal with. Then I thought heck may as well make the belly lams one pc too!
By the way David - thanks for all your help on this thing!! :notworthy:
I like the look of that one Kenny. Looking forward to seeing that full draw!
Heck Kenny, your shop looks spotless compared to mine. Mine looks like 3rivers dumpster threw up in it! :biglaugh:
Me too Brad!! LOL
Randy, I've been emptying that red mechanics box of bow stuff ,gonna move it out in back where the mechanickin takes place. Then some good cabinets as I have time. I have stuff I shoulda thrown out years ago but still haven't....
Maybe someday it will be as nice as Roy's..... Nah, probably not! :)
Looking good Kenny you are way ahead of me ,still in the drawing stages...thanks for the help and BTW chad don't use enough glue so cross your fingers
Kenny, hope I am not too curious, but I am always interested in how things are made, even if I don't plan on building it myself. Would you explain in more detail what you mean when you say the .001 has a built in powerlam and tip wedge. Is it a compound taper where the thin ends of the full lenght lam gets gradually thicker towards the tip end?
The late Jack Howard used to do something like that in his recurve bows. Bue--.
that looks great Bud cant wait to see the finished bow
Very cool. I am wanting to build a 62" like the Bingham Hybrid. Looking forward to the rest of the build.

CRAP!! Glad I went with black glass!
Bue, exactly. It is a .001 taper with a 12" wedge built on each end at about .009" per inch.
Then I paralleled the ends for 8" because it looked too thick on the ends.
Archer Dave, here are some free plans that make a decent bow.... :D
http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=125;t=011684
Dang it! I took about 20 pics of working on this bow, loaded on computer and deleted the card.
Well, they are somewhere in cyberspace.
The bow came in quite heavy at 65@ 28" ! Wow!!
Stack was .365 probably shoulda been about .340! LOL
I'm not sure I like the braced profile but full draw don't look too bad. Not the look I'm used to but will draw to an obscene long draw.
Didn't square up with string til 33.5" LOL
Has enuff preload that it will be really quiet, shot a couple arrows off it with no shelf cut, really quiet in shop!
Hmmm, just happened to think, guess that skinny little riser must be stout nuff, no idea what it is drawing for weight at 33.5"
didn't happen without pictures ! :bigsmyl: Beat you to it Roy!
Bob, it's WIF out... Get er right.. LOL
65@28 is perfect! When should I watch the mail? ;)
Better wait and see her profile, Craig!!
I hear online dating is chancy!! LOL
Got some pics going now??
Got her out of form and cleaned up on my edge sander! LOL... Pic didn't turn, but can't be picky I guess

Marked center of limbs at nock(31" mark) and at center of bow, stretched hi tech B-50 alignment checking attachment and is real close....
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0007_zps73d99dc8.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0007_zps73d99dc8.jpg.html)
Off barely, so didn't change mark on end of limbs to match center, just marked edge of line to lay out from with arrow...

Measured 5/16 each way from edge of mark in above pic and measured 12" from bow center, strait line fades to nocks...

A master at work
Looking good Kenny
Now on the 31" mark from center which I squared across limb before grinding profile, I mark at 45* (make sure nocks are pointed right way :)
I leave the line, makes a 3" shorter string work just right after overlays are on. I round the edges on back slightly ,will put overlays on a bit later. Usually go ahead and put em on before this point, but thought I may have to pike it...
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0015_zps67af0cae.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0015_zps67af0cae.jpg.html)
Now the part I just ain't sure about. The braced profile . Just not sure I like the look of it, way different look than I'm used to....

28" draw..

String angle at 28" probably not getting all the power out of her, will chrono it when done...

Drew her on the homemade Hooter Shooter til the string squared up...

33.5" draw when she squared up, reckon it will stack shortly there after!! !! :D

I'm just a hack!!
I like the look of this one Kenny. Would you mind if I made one similar to it in bamboo?
Dave.
Not too shabby....
Heck no Dave! If you can do it I'd love to see it!! Can you bend the boo in that riser deflex?
Nice , I like the profile and its built for us long draw guys  :saywhat:
Looks like you could make a shorter bow and the braced profile would be better and so would the 28" profile. Looks cool though
It looks kinda different to me, if it shoots good, I will like the looks better tho!
I can use the same form for a shorter bow, and may make one.
I like a longer bow, but was hoping for a forgiving forward handle longer longbow that the string didn't touch the limbs for quiet and would take care of my shooting mistakes. Is that too much to ask?
awesome build kenny
did you chrono it yet?
cheers
wayne
No, will get it Saturday I hope, gotta get riser overlays on and cut sight window.
I think shooting around full width riser would hamper it a bit. Probably not gonna need that!! LOL
Looks great Kenny. Really like to try and make something like that someday.
Thanks guys!!
You guys don't think it looks weird at brace?
I like the full draw on it but can't get past the awkward looking braced profile.....
i think its awesome- but yer right, the braced pic does look different- just cos its something we are not used to. but i bet it looks a whole lot different when the riser is all shaped up!
True nuff, sure hope it does.
But like I said, if it is super forgiving and easy to shoot, I just won't look at it while I'm huntin with it!!
Nice Kenny, super informative too. I've always kind of thought that forward risers looked a bit strange, doesn't look too out of place to me. Maybe try adding more taper to the limbs? Taper and tip wedges to get it bending more mid limb and shorten the draw without making it whip-y? The heavy deflex bows seem to like a lot of taper. Thanks for sharing! Excited to see it finished!
Interesting. I think it looks kind of weird at brace, the first thought that came to my mind was; clothes hanger(with the hook missing) But it looks okay when drawn and something new takes a while to get used to,I guess. Hope it shoots good.
Bue--.
Doesn't look any weirder than you ole timer.. LOL
Just found this thread. Love these types of threads. My take on it is maybe a little stiff in the tips. You are probably going to chrono it and see where you are then go off of that.
I have always liked the looks of a forward handle bow.
Kenny, Got a question for you..
1. Where are you going to get the 35" arrows? :)
After studying the profile a little, I think it looks "weird" because the riser isn't finished yet, or is it? I am not bowyer, so I don't know. But i compared this profile to an Elkhart and it seems like his is the same except for the amount of riser he adds on the belly of the bow. I could possibly be WAY off, just a rookie's observation.
His bows are also about 6" shorter. lol. This would be a great bow for a 7' person!
and sorry for the flood of questions but, in reference to your string angle not being 90* at 28", that means you are not getting all the performance out of the bow?
Is "stacking" when the bow gets past that 90* angle?
Yep the Elkheart was one of the bows I looked at when drawing this up. I wanted the forward handle but with the longer length to cover for my poor form... :D
Usually when the string angle goes past square the bow will begin to stack . That is, the weight will become more per inch than before that point.
I'm thinking since the string angle is so low at 28" I'm not getting nearly all out of her that is possible. But, with the stack I used being similar to my other d/ r and coming in 15 lbs heavier, it may be quicker due to lighter limbs for weight obtained for the stack. :p
What an awesome build along I can't wait till its finished ! I'm always learning from this site.Joe
Thanks Kenny. I think I can get the boo to bend around the riser. I can heat it and that will help.
I'll give it a try once we're done with all the overtime at work and I can get out into the shop again.
Dave.
OK, been to the Dr and took my pup to the dog doc afterward!! I'm gluing the overlays on now, and hoping I can get her down to around 55# .
I think I just overestimated the stack.....
Alright, got some more progress pics...
This is gluing on belly and tip overlays...

This is making and gluing the back overlay, why I'm going to this trouble for a bow that is gonna be painted, I have no clue!!

Here I drew the deflex radius on a scrap block and instead of tilting my bandsaw table, just used a pc to jack up one side, you'll see what I'm doing here in a minute!!

I'm not sure I should show the chrono reading, it wasn't what I even expected....
Show them hahaha Kenny that thing looks sharp!! How did you manage to get the weight down?
Handle looks very nice. Perhaps you better keep the chrono reading to yourself.
Weeelllll, I really wasn't expecting this but here it is....
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/SANY0036_zps96386729.jpg) (http://s32.photobucket.com/user/kennym/media/SANY0036_zps96386729.jpg.html)
Geez, I've built bows chasin speed and didn't do any better than one chasing a forgiving bow.....
I narrowed the limbs to 3/8"+ at tips and a bit under 1 3/8" at fades and trapped the back. I will have 55# @ 28" after sanding, maybe even a bit less...
Thats awesome looking bow there Bud. came out nice too that pretty much puts you shooting a 10gpp @ 180 way good enough to do the job.
Good looking rig ol' Hoss.
Lou
Can't believe I just now saw this thread. I just finished a forward riser short r/d and love the way it shoots. This one right here looks pretty sweet Kenny. Really like the looks of it and from what the chrono says, seems like a keeper if she shoots as smooth and is as quiet as it is pretty! That riser overlay is pretty slick too!
That's pretty slick Kenny!! I wasn't sure that I personally was gonna like it at first but it really came a long ways and looks good!!
Wow I can't believe the speed that's awesome!!! Can't wait to see her finished.
Please let us know how she shoots for ya and if you achieved what you where looking for.
Thanks guys! First shot I noticed it was real quiet. But it has a hunting string on it from another bow.
Has 6 catwhisker silencers on it for some reason. Maybe needed to slow the arrow slightly for tuning, don't remember....
I bet a bare string and some tuned arrows would pick up a few fps.
The shooting was done with a machine with a caliper release so you can take off 4-5 for fingers shooting too.
When I get her sanded, I think I can shoot it, no prob, shot it a few times at 65# off the hand like a selfbow.
I still don't like how close the string is to the limbs, but it seems to work!
Totally awesome Kenny. Thanks for sharing and good luck with it!!
Kenny : I seem to remember reading about flight shooters of the past building bows with the string close to the limbs like that?
Try cranking that back to 30" and let us know what the chrono says if you would and have time? Thanks Drew
Triangle brace usaly means speed. I don't think I would change a think with those numbers.
I have some CX 250s that might give about 9 or 10 gpp for that! Heck I might try her at 32" LOL
I've been thinking about that Drew, you get the brace height, but the limbs at fades are only about 5" from the string. I think it gives an inch and a half more power stroke. Somebody correct me if I'm thinkin wrong here....
It surprised me Mike!!
that is absolutely awesome!! :) :) :)
Kenny : That's the idea I think more power stroke and less tension at brace if I remember correctly .
I like the looks , it came out great (IMHO)
I think with a longer draw you will really see the benefits of that design .
Kenny, how do you like your 18" Grizz belt sander for accuracy? I picked up a used one a couple of years ago, but still haven't put it into operation. I thought I'd sell my larger widebelt from my cabinet shop days, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It'd probably help out my electric bill!
I made the nocks a good bit ahead of the bow back so it would have plenty tension at brace which is probably why I came in heavy, and also why its quiet due to preload.
I may find it is not that forgiving.
I'm betting 30" will really speed that arrow up from previous bow tests!! I think it will draw 33-34" without stacking. Haven't tested that yet.
From the look of the string angle, finger pinch won't be a prob at 28" tho! LOL
Hi South,
It is a good machine, the only prob I have is sometimes the electric eye gets dust on it and occasionally runs the belt to the limit switches and stops the machine. Hate that especially if I'm making expensive veneers, sometimes it makes a little dip.
Other than that it is a horse!
Kenny,
Can we get a full profile pic strung and unstrung?
Thanks!
Sweet one, Kenny. I love those forward handle bows.
Nice job ole timer...
Thanks guys!!
Andy, look at page 4 , lots of pics on there. If not what you are wanting to see, let me know and I'll take some....
Sheesh! I don't know how I missed those pictures. Thanks, Kenny. (Note to self: get eyes checked, find lost brain)
My apologies guys, found some fault in my testing. Bow is not as good performer as first thought. Trying to sort the probs out.... Sorry for bad reporting!
Well be sure to post what you do find, even if she's not a speed demon you probably still have the forgiveness you where actually searching for. Still a beauty can't believe your gonna paint her
OK the draw weight at 28" is 56.8 , changed stuff so I can pull it on my shooting machine and get a better reading.
The arrow weight is 525 grains, got the scale out instead of going off memory. That's 9.24 gpp.
The speed is 188 fps
Sorry bout the first report!
Here's the kicker and I have to run this again, it appears to start stacking at about 30" even tho the string angle hasn't reached 90 deg. yet.....
The bow is more recurve like in the draw weight gains
28"-- 56.80
29"--59.31
30"-- 63.01
31"-- 66.36
32"-- 69.98
Shot that 525 arrow at 30 " which is a bit over 8 gpp, went 201 fps
A 560 grain arrow(8.88 gpi) went 195 at 30 " draw
Nice work Kenny
Sheeew , think I'm just gonna shoot some arrows !! LOL
That's awesome !
very nice fella
quite envious!
excellent results all round Kenny.
Kenny : Those still look like good numbers to me
I think I could get about the same out of my other longbow form with some more tweaking.I keep learning stuff! :D
I think you will be on top of several thumpin lists if you paint that bow. ;) Bue--."
Not gonna paint it now Bue, I've learned all I can from it, won't be huntin with it anyway....
Great job Kenny. I really like how you finished out the riser. It looks very comfortable.
Outstanding results too. Very impressive.
Very nice and well done build along Kenny. Sorry I didn't see this when you first began. I'm just now getting to look through all the information. I always get something new to put towards my own bow building by reading these threads.
Why not hunt with her? You send some arrows through her today?
Well, it isn't really any improvement over the D/R I'm shootin now, I don't really want to bother with painting the black glass. So will just hunt with the one I have now.
I do like the forward riser for the way it feels in the hand!
kenny,
Great job and thanks for the information.
good to see you back in the game!
VJ.
Thanks Vince, I may only be in til April, my job may change gears then!!
