Title: 62" R/D build along (with a lot of pic )
Post by: andrianyuga on December 02, 2014, 10:39:00 AM
Hi everyone..
this is my first time bow build along, after 3 months preparing material and simple tools to make it..

I have 2 weeks to build this, before back to work for a month  :D

I decide to R/D, cause i think looks simple, sorry for my English and measurements standard, in my country we use meter, centimeter, and milimeter

So here it is..

Part 1 : Preparing The laminations

Okay, first i bought some hard mahogani for about 2.5 meters long, 1.5 cm thick and 4 cm width, this woods is scrap from wooden doors and windows maker,so i get it very cheap  :D

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/1_zps7b6a777c.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/1_zps7b6a777c.jpg.html)

i prepare 4 mm on my table saw to cut it,cause i will get for 3 mm or 2mm thick on my drum sander
( i don't have bandsaw, its very expensive here, about $ 500 in USD )

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/6_zpsfdecbcd5.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/6_zpsfdecbcd5.jpg.html)
 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/5_zps12061a4d.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/5_zps12061a4d.jpg.html)

Okay, first i cut and try with low quality wood at the same thickness

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/4_zps6393f952.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/4_zps6393f952.jpg.html)
 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/3_zps5a187fce.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/3_zps5a187fce.jpg.html)

everything is okay, and count my finger still 5..lol

Next, i cut with good quality wood with the same way, and the result like this

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/2_zps4f8019df.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/2_zps4f8019df.jpg.html)

not too straight cut, but i'll fix it on my drum sander

My drum sander, i made from 1/2 hp old waterpump with a little modification
Here it is :
 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/10_zps6da4c4f9.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/10_zps6da4c4f9.jpg.html)
 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/7_zps39793be5.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/7_zps39793be5.jpg.html)
 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/8_zps4dd34580.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/8_zps4dd34580.jpg.html)
 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/9_zpsa7fa2372.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/9_zpsa7fa2372.jpg.html)
 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/12_zps52eb2e3c.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/12_zps52eb2e3c.jpg.html)

and the result is something like this

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/13_zps2703d54e.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/13_zps2703d54e.jpg.html)

For comparison :
- Both upper and bottom woodstrip is 4 mm thick
- Center part is 2 mm thick

I cut the woodstrip for 85cm long, and also cut a pair of bamboo for backed ( not symetrical node  :(  )

Is DONE..for preparing the laminations  :)

 Part 2 : Riser Making

Okay, for the riser i using one of Indonesian hardwood,, Kempas wood ( Koompassia Mallacensis ).. I cut for 40 cm to prevent failure at fade out making, in fact i want it for 35 cm long

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/17_zpsf4700469.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/17_zpsf4700469.jpg.html)

Top is durian wood, bottom is kempas wood,i draw the pattern based from the web..

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/18_zpsa213dfa3.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/18_zpsa213dfa3.jpg.html)

the size is too far from the pattern huh..??
i will add some wood strip to fix the size later..

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/19_zpse16a4a28.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/19_zpse16a4a28.jpg.html)

Very very ugly shape:(

Now, lets the drum sander do the miracle..

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/23_zpsd815ba32.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/23_zpsd815ba32.jpg.html)

Part 3 Gluing

First, so hard to find clear glass or Bo tuff here, even in Jakarta..we must buy online from US and pay more for customs tax and shipping ( hopeless )

So, i research alternative material to replace it..I found this grey stuff

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/37_zps8f15b3cd.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/37_zps8f15b3cd.jpg.html)

Guess what..?? this is   PVC SHEET 2 mm thick  :D

I bought it from local supplier for $ 15 with 2 meters x 1 meter size.. if works i have so many PVC lam..

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/38_zpsf3dc5e1b.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/38_zpsf3dc5e1b.jpg.html)

I cut same size with my cutter knife

Scratch bamboo strip too..

Preparing the glue..
there is no Smooth On here also..i using local epoxy which no need heatbox,it cure for 4 hours in room temperature

my motto : " if you don't try, you failed..."  :D

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/46_zpsa1e58d5b.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/46_zpsa1e58d5b.jpg.html)

mix the epoxy

 (http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag354/Yuga_Andriano/47_zps2b9f2df8.jpg) (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Yuga_Andriano/media/47_zps2b9f2df8.jpg.html)

Sorry no pic during gluing process..cause epoxy everywhere, it's hard to taking picture while your glove sticky with this stuff..the worse part bow building i think

Bue --> yes it is..because the epoxy isn't like Smooth On epoxy which more flexible..my epoxy has a little flexibility

There's no Smooth On Here.. :(

as far as i know pvc and plastic like materials can not be stricked with epoxy.

epoxy can't hold them.

how does this worked out? or worked out?

best.

as far as i know pvc and plastic like materials can not be stricked with epoxy.

epoxy can't hold them.

how does this worked out? or worked out?

That is a nice job of making a bow from materials that you have available to you.  I really like your home made drum sander, too.  You sure get good results sanding and shaping with it.
Congratulations on your bow; how does it shoot?

Very nice and very refreshing  to see "old school" hand tools being used. I've always enjoyed using chisels, hand planes and such. I like your drum sander, lot of ingenuity shown in this build. Keep us posted on the results.
