Title: Sanding or cutting a grip
Post by: Doods70 on August 12, 2014, 12:52:00 AM
Hi All. Hope some of you can help me. I bought a 45 lbs longbow by Cartel (korean made) and it shoot well and is very quiet.

The only problem is the grip is flat and big. Can I cut or sand it down into a pistol grip? Willit harm or break the bow?

It's wood core and is laminated.

Thank you
Doods

would be hard to guide you right without seeing the bow..could you post a few pics of the handle section from all angles?

Typically you would be safe by shaping the grip a little but I would be hard pressed to tell you to "have at it" knowing nothing about this bow...especially if it is a Korean made bow..

That last statement is not meant to be demeaning, I am just saying that it's likely that it is a massed produced bow and we would really need to see the construction methods to give you sound advice..

Good advice above!  Pics would be very helpful. At the very least you would need to take measurements of riser and grip section. Also the materials used in the bow. If there is room for re-shaping, you are going to want to seal the exposed wood somehow.

Pictures would help.

I'd probably file it with a half-round ,I'll file, then sand it smooth and nice. Then refinish.

In general I'm not a fan of refinishing only one part of a bow. I don't think it's likely to blend well with the original finish. And I doubt it's worth refinishing the whole thing. Personally I'd save a bit of money over time, then sell the cartel and buy a bow that's made with a grip you like.

Without seeing the handle area would not be able to say.
Also it is possible to build,up the heal of the grip to shape it to a desired fit.

There is enough meat in that riser to allow for some modification. Rasp it out to fit your needs then sand it smooth with 220 paper. Several coats of spray-on polly over the entire bow will finish it up.
