Title: Doing A CO Hunt? You should know...
Post by: monterey on July 31, 2014, 06:22:00 PM
Over the past ten years or so.  Give or take a few, we have had a major assault on millions of acres of lodgepole pines by bark beetles.

here is the problem.  These standing dead trees are now in the stage where ground water has rotted the base of the trees.  Those trees are falling now and can be a huge impediment to travel!

The other problem is, of course, the possibility that one will fall on you. Two years ago my hunting partner had one fall a few feet behind him on a day when there was no wind.  He didn't know it was falling till it was half way down.

If you're going into the back country, choose your campsite accordingly.  If doing a drive up camp, bring your chain saw and cut the standing dead that could nail you.  Makes great wood for the campfire

Another thing to plan for will be wet weather!  If the pattern we are in now continues it could be cold and wet!  Throw in an early cold front out of the north and its snow time.
