Title: Some wood help?
Post by: GladwinHunter777 on July 27, 2014, 03:10:00 PM
Hello!
Gonna place an order with Maddog and would like some help deciding what woods I want for the riser and limbs.
I like dark woods with a warm classy look to them. Like lots of grain or swirls.. I'm really lost when it comes to wood.
If anyone has some combos they think would look nice or some pics to back it up I'd appreciate it!

Thanks
Caleb

Exotic wood like zebra and bocote have lots of grain and really pop when the finish is put on.

I personally love black walnut.  No two pieces are the same.  Lots of color.  I just posted a pic of two wood riser that had walnut and pecan on the trade bow thread.

-cocobolo
-black walnut
-Bolivian rosewood
-bubinga

I like the coco/rosewood combo.  Something light on the limbs like zebra.

Wait are you saying cocobolo and Bolivian rosewood both on the riser and zebra wood limbs?

I like two wood combo on risers.  Look good and are stronger.  I am at work and cannot access photo bucket but I'll try to send a pic of my bow that has coco/rosewood together.  I like dark color riser with light color limbs or vice versa.

Pau Fero is a warm feel darker wood that is gorgious.  Accent maybe with zebra.

Caleb,
Here is a coco/rosewood riser.  It is the one on the right.

Here are some longbows with a two wood combo in them.

I suggest you go to the Wood Database --  http://www.wood-database.com/   and browse through the wood pix until you see several species that turn you on.  Then approach your bowyer and ask if he has or can get the woods you like the looks of.

Macassar ebony is the nicest dark wood to me. This bow is mac ebony and east indian rosewood.

Or there is always walnut with mac ebony. Myrtle lams from Troy Breeding.
