Havent posted here in a good while. Thought this one was a good fit. Its ipe backed with hickory. The entire bow was glued together with TB3, it is spliced from a 1 x 6 x 40 board.

Very nice.
Nice one pearl
Very nice!
Looks just as nice here as it did on PA!
X 2 what Mitch said. Beautiful bow, PD.
Please don't be shy about posting your next one, too. :)
Good looking bow. It's nice to see you back.
Dave.
Great looking bow, Pearl! Nice to see you back again and with as fine a bow as ever to boot! Thanks for sharing. :)
Very nice, Chris..
Thanks guys. I had a good time building this one. Its nice to play with square/straight stuff once in a while.
Great job!
Chris - I love it. That's my kind of bow.
That's a good looking bow! Nice work!

x2!
Chris,
Beautiful bow-- elegant simplicity at it's best.
How did you prep the IPE & hickory for the TB3 glue-up? I want to build one just like this (but around 50-52# @ 28"). I've got some nice IPE and a couple of hickory backings in the basement just calling my name.
I also want to make a couple of lightweight (28-30# @ 28", probably 66" nock-to-nock) ones like this for my daughters. Would a 1/16" hickory backing be enough? Reason I'm specifying 1/16" is I've got a thin slice left over from sawing some backings out of a hickory board. I could make a backing out of it that would be maybe 3/32 in the middle and 1/16" out past mid-limb to the tips.
Jim
And 3... great one!
what an elegant bow!Really like it!
Thanks again for the words everybody. I really appreciate it.
Jim I sanded the mating surfaces with 120 grit on a block to keep it flat and consistent. No de-greasing. I've never done that to any bow actually. In my opinion 1/16" is too thin for a backer.
Very nicely done. Jawge
Always a nice on pearl
I have a bamboo and Ipe I need to start on
I have never done any bamboo backings
Was that bow based off of Howard's description in his book?
Where can I buy a stave like he describes, or a billet?
Nice job!
PD is an amazing bowyer...
Thanks for sharing your bows and knowledge..
Brian the bow was based strictly off my imagination. I didn't follow any recipes persay. The ipe was just left over deck board ends I spliced at the handle.
Thanks again for the kind words gentleman.
Darn nice job pd
Nice bow Pearl.I have some hickory and some ipe ,I guess I'll have to give it a try.
I wish I had your imagination
Great work
Good looking lumber pearls
Nice one Chris
Love this "Hill" Chris!
Nice bow Chris. Was that a straight taper from fade to tip and how thick did you have the ipe. I had a HBI blow up on me this summer but really like how it was coming out. I still have some backing strips and some osage slates to add to the belly of something. Will have to work on getting some ipe for a tri-lam and a regular backed bow.
I kept the limbs parallel 6" beyond the end of each 3" fade, then straight tapered. I couldn't tell you how thick the ipe was. I didn't measure it, I just cut it. Id guess 1/2". The back was well under 3/16" when I started, its thinner now. The ipe is rift sawn and the hickory is 1/4 sawn. Pretty good combo.
I just love this bow! I'd love to try my hand at making one like this, I have a nice quarter sawn red oak plank, do you think this would work? I'm new to making bows, been planning on some pyramid bows but I'm just not crazy about the design. Makes it hard to put effort into it if I'm not in love with the design.
I've been lusting over hill style bows, and did not know one could be made with just TB3 and no hot box. Any good links I can do some reading on?
-Xander
Thanks Xander
Red oak, in my opinion, is good for trim and furniture. If you want something similar in design you have to stick with compression strong woods like Yew, ipe or osage on the belly. There are some other exotics that work well to. Jatoba comes to mind. The backing has to be strong in tension. Hickory, ash, maple or bamboo will do the job.
Beauty bow, Pearl....I've got some of the same ingredients waiting to be glued up myself! One of the finest shooting bows I ever built was/is a bamboo backed Ipe. Been itching to use a Hick backing with the stuff, just been spending too much time lately with trashy osage.
You gave us most of your dimensions....what about limb width? Or did I miss that...

I greatly appreciate the feedback. I guess I'm going to search for a suitable board. Don't normally see those specie out here. Backing woods aren't a problem, though.
Anyways, most excellent bow!
Btw, I've always been partial to Pork Pie, though Pearl is tough to beat ;-)
-Cheers!
Mark, the handle and each fade is 4" long. I carried a width of 1" out 6" past each fade, then straight tapered to the tips.
