A shot in the dark.... wondering if anyone has or knows where I can find some Brazilian rosewood for building a riser?
Brazilian no but I do have a chunk of Honduras Rosewood if that helps you... its 2x2x24
Brazilian rosewood has been CITES listed Appendix I since like the early 90's. And was first CITES listed in 1967, so no export since then.
My guess is most of what you'll find has been salvaged and resawn with guitar back and side sets in mind. I've seen some guitar sets for sale for around $1000.00 - $5000.00. I'm guessing enough for a riser is probably gonna be a couple hundred bucks and you will have limited choice for sure. Try the auction site, there's usually stuff listed there. It's not the cheapest source for wood, but at least you get to see pics first. I've bought alot of exotics of there with good success.
Also think about maybe one of the other rosewoods ... cocobolo or kingwood are easier to find and a fraction of the price.
I have a roughcut board of it. Next time I get in the shop, I'll run it through the planer to see what the grain looks like. What thickness do you need?
I have a couple of 2"x8"x48" pieces that I bought at an estate sale a couple of years back. You don't want to know what they cost, I'll just say the wife freaked when she saw the amount of the check. I am still designing the bows to make from them in my mind, one of these day's I'll get the nerve to take the band saw to them.
Wow,if you have Dalbergia Nigra in those sizes you Are a lucky man. :) Bue--.
There's no difference to find here in Brazil. =\\
( how sad is that? rsrs... )
In the wood's shop it's forbidden to sell, and a few people who have it, sell with a very expansive value.
I have some pieces yet, but when I use it, I'll probably buy from abroad, because here will be difficult.
