Title: Planer or drum sander
Post by: acollins on May 22, 2014, 07:23:00 PM
I have a local guy selling a grizzly planer and a grizzly drum sander. I would like to buy both but can't afford it. I am new to building bows and just getting started. Which one would be best to purchase, and why

Thanks

Planners are great for cleaning up rough wood. Outside of that IMHO they have no place in bow making. Jump on the sander if it's still available.

I concur. I've built a boatload of bows and never owned a planer... love my drum sander though.

I'll put another vote on the sander. Planer can't help you with the thicknesses you need to get if you are doing lams without blowing up the wood. If you're making solid stave selfbows then you don't need to be accurate enough to justify a planer. You'll be making rough outs and final tweaking during the tillering process.

This past week I crashed a buddy's work shop to use his 17" Grizzly Bandsaw and his Drumsander to prep some veneers. WOW - Now all I can think about is how can I get my hands on a sander like that! He had a planner but it was not needed. So I too would vote Sander.

Yep I am on it Roy...I have a 14" Grizzly bandsaw that i love and I think with a new fence I can do a better job at cutting nice veneers. and I have my eye on this drumsander...Do you think this is big enough for our purposes?

Yes indeed Roy - that's what I am talking about! Now you just made it more difficult to be patient. My wife and I are debt free and I am supposed to continue to live according to a plan that says only pay in cash. I have a list of reasons why this should be the exception to the rule but the wife is not "buying it". A little play on words there...did you see that?
