Title: New old bows- 54" static tip hickory + 58" bendy handle
Post by: LittleBen on April 15, 2014, 03:24:00 PM
I've been on a kick of reworking some of my older bows that maybe didn't get the most skilled attention originally.

So far this is the first to approach completion.

It's hickory (I believe it was one of the smoothbarked varities)

1" wide to past midlimb then tapering to 1/2" tips. 1/4" reflex after unstringing.
The bow takes a 52" string and draws 45# @ 26". Heat tempered into deflex/reflex and to create static tips.

I really like this one alot. It's never going to look great because of the butchering I did to it originally, but it's tillered a lot better now.

If I do it again I'll go alot wider, but other than that I like this one.

Here's another Im just wrapping up that was shortened from a 72" ELB.

Also hickory from the same log.

58" ntn, 51# @ 26", ~1.5" string follow, 1" wide to past midlimb, very narrow tips.

Still not positive if te tiller is right, or if it's slightly weak where that lump is in the inner right limb.

Both bows look real good to me.I would like start on wood bows after getting a few glass bows under my belt,so Im wondering if the static tips help with the way the bow feels to the hand at the shot or does it give the bow better cast and speed?Maybe both?  :dunno:

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Glad I could share these with you all.

Al,

I think the static tips do a couple things, reduce string angle, reduce stack, increase reflex.

I believe they make the bow feel less handshock like any recurve, but only if you keep them light.

They should theoretically increase speed.

I believe this all depends on you making the static tips low in mass otherwise all bets are off. Also in order to get any additional speed from any wood recurve I think you need a wider working limb compared to a straight stave bow (in order to store more energy without getting a bunch of extra set)

My guess is that both these bows will shoot very similar speed. I'll report back when I chrono them.

I like the first one a lot. The second one looks more like one of my tiller jobs....
