How wide do you guys make your sleds?Do you make them wide enough to do two lams at once,so maybe they come out the same or just wide enough to do one lam? :dunno:
Thanks for any help
Al
Mine is 4" wide. All half length lams should be ground in exact pairs.
x2 :)
Mine is 2" wide, and it sucks for exactly that reason ... doing them in pairs is the logical choice.
I like one at 2" to saw the tapers to a taper, then a 4.25" to do 2 at a time(if you ever do 2" wide lams)
I make two at a time but not together.. :) I run one through then run the second one through. Then adjust the sander and run one through then run the second one through. Then keep doing that till I get the taper I want. Takes about 4 passes and they are done and come out +- .00005 of each other.. How's that .00005 sound, Sister McKenzie? :)
Heck, you must have some pretty good measuring equipment Dang!!
Purty close reverend! :goldtooth:
:wavey:
And all the people said....Amen..
I cut my lams 8" longer than the bow and use a planer to cut the tapers from each end. The paralelles are also cut full length. Afterwards I cut the lams to length and ready to glue up. My sled it 4" wide and 42" long, but I never cut two lams at once only one long one.
The sleds I use most often are 40" x 4" and most the time I run the lam's in pairs. My favorite sleds are both 72", one is parallel and the other has a .001 taper from the center to both ends. They do away with the need to run two lam's at a time. Finding good stock does get expensive for a part-time bow builder.
Roy, are you sure it is not .0005 you mean and not .00005, but if it is, measuring in hundredthousands of an inch is pretty serious. Bue--. :)
I messed up Bue Boy, that was to read .0000005 :)
That darn Kenny M did this to me.. :)
I have another question.Do you have to make one for every thickness with the same taper ,say one with a .001 taper and a butt thickness of .070 and another one with a .001 taper and a butt thickness of .130 or do you just use one with the same taper and keep checking the thickness as you grind them?
I hope that makes sense. :knothead:
Thanks again.
Al
Same sled, you will wanna keep track of actual thickness as you go...
I cut lam blanks about .040 over desired thickness, so I can get rid of all sanding marks by the time I get to desired thickness....
All these decimals points makes me want to add something stronger than creamer to my coffee. What was that magic potion you told me about Roy? Coffee and what? :saywhat:

Roy is messing with you
.0005 is 5 10,000 th of a inch or 1/2 thousand
.00005 is 5 100,000 th of a inch
and that last on he said is
.000005 is 1,000,000 ( million th of a inch) :scared:
Roy :knothead: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
I did tool and die and machine work for 25 years.
:goldtooth:
one hair out of your head is .003 + or - 1 inch :biglaugh:
Coffee and JD critman.. :)
Dear Mr. Daniel, I make my bows to very strict tolerances.. :)
I just need to learn more about Z-splices. The cuts looks good but the limbs don't line up straight...

I think it will work :)
Minus T (aka Roy),
Depending on how you cut in the string groves on that puppy, your either gonna have some serious relex or deflex. :biglaugh:
The problem might be caused by too much bow building fluid. ;)
Dave.
Looks good to me. Bue--.
Geez, You guys seem to be always splitting hairs,he just needs a hair more bow juice to get that shoot able.
JUST SAYING
If your lam (stack thickness) is off .001 or .002
How accurate is the width (profile) of the limb
You will never know that it is off .001 or .002
Right :dunno:

I'm sayin on longbows, if you have .005 over target thickness, you're good to great! You can lose that extra real easy but cant add any without piking.
Recurves, you may need to be a bit more careful! :)
cool

With that fancy water he drinks, it may take more than a hair...
