Title: Interesting backings?
Post by: mjwhitby on February 15, 2014, 12:11:00 AM
So the recent post of the feather backing got my wheels turning. Let's see or hear about all the different backings you guys have seen or done. Not just the norm.

Snake belly

I used it because I always see snake back backing but no belly skin

I did the belly scales a while back also.

Here is one I'm working on now.  Just glued it on last night.  Its not real snake skin.  It cost me just a little over a dollar for enough to back a bow.

I really like cherry bark.  Another very cool one that was posted recently was a grass carp skinned bow that John made.

This is cherry bark backing like above with the lichens and mosses left on. I just applied Tru-Oil over it.

I'm a fan of the carp backing it looks cool, would gar skin work? I know that stuff is thick as could be?

With the fish backings you remove the scales.
I can't imagine removing the scales from a gar.
With the carp or grass carp removing the scales, with care leaves a better pattern.

What's the process for drying Carp skin??

I have only done one carp skin and it was frozen fresh, not dried.  I don't think drying would work.

You can dry carp skins.  It works just fine.  You need to really degrease them.

That fake snake skin was some cotton fabric I got off ****.  I got enough to back 6 bows for $7.69

Ooops!  Didn't know you couldn't say that.

The carp skins I used were given to me by Tim Ott. They were dried. I have another set that Pearlie gave me that are also dried.
