Title: Tiller check
Post by: DaveMac on February 09, 2014, 03:29:00 PM
So I'm in the process of tillering my first bow (and already planning the next  :)  ) Its 70" long pyramid design 1 3/4" wide at the flare tapering to 1/2", and I'm aiming for 30# @ 28". I've got it to the short string at approx 5" brace, and have got it to 18" on the tiller tree.

I was hoping someone could cast a more experienced eye on it so far.

the limbs look even to me, but I'm not sure about the right hand limb. I have one of those tillering gizmos but I'm unsure if I'm using it correctly, I'm unsure as to what I'm aim for as an end point with the gizmo... Do I want no pencil line or an even pencil line the whole length?

Looks like they are bending even to me and coming along fine.  Looks to me like mid to outer limb needs to start bending a little more now.  As you run the gizmo along the belly the space between the gizmo and the belly should remain constant.  The pencil will mark where it is flat or not bending as much.  Also - just for info - to reduce set, I would suggest not leaving the bow pulled and hooked on your tree for any length of time while you snap pictures.  Especially as you increase draw length.  Looks like you are going to have a nice one here.

Yes, they look even. I would get mid limb on bending more and leave the the handle area alone. Jawge

Thanks guys!

Will shortening the string make much difference? As I said it's currently braced about 5" so if I shorten the string to fistmele will that bring the outer limbs in?

When I started I resigned myself to the idea that I would break a couple of bows along the way, but now I'm pretty invested in this one and would be gutted if it breaks : )

I don't think you will see much difference with the brace at fistmile.
Taking some more off from mid limb out should make it more likely to survive.
Just go slow.
