Well I finally got my edge sander built.I changed the size from 6x89,to 6x108.I got the plans from PlansNow.com.I think you can get all the parts from McMaster Carr, except for the sanding belt.I got the sanding belt from Econoway Abrasives. The 6x89 would have worked but the 6x108 lets me get one whole limb on the belt at one time.30 inch platten compared to 39 1/2 inch platten. The plan calls for barrel nuts, you'll have better luck finding them if you look for dowel nuts or cross dowel nuts.If you change from 89 to 108 make the core parts and the sleeve parts 9 1/2 inchs longer.I had a motor from my 6x48 craftsman horizontal belt sander. It is 3450 RPM,if you have to buy one I would go with a 1725 RPM and still slow it down with pulleys.I used a 2 inch on the motor and a 5 inch on the drive pulley. It should be around 1380 RPM.It works great, little vibration, tracks great.I hope I gave enough information if you decide to build one.I have less than $400.00 in it.Will try to post pics.

Awesome..............
Thanks for compliments guys. The reason I posted was because I was so happy with the it turned out I thought it was worth passing on.
You have every reason to be proud of that my friend.. ^5
Savage,I forgot the cost of the plans.$9.50 at PlansNow.com.Type edgesander into the search window, you can buy them and print them off,17 pages.
Wow- great job on the sander!
wow! awesome job. envious of you.
nice job!!
very pro job mate!
what size motor did you use-and do you think it is sufficient- or should a person go bigger.
thanks.
fujimo, the motor is 3/4 hp,3450 RPM.It seems to have plenty of power. If I would have bought a motor I would have gotten a 1725 RPM and still slowed it down some with pulleys, otherwise you'll burn work piece.
Jorgy,
I made that same belt sander 4 or so years ago. I am very happy with it and when I was in the shop on a regular basis used it every time I was in there.
You've done an excellent job with yours and the added lenght was right smart. I've shaped bow limbs with my 89" belt but the extra inches of surface was a great idea. So were the castors.
That's good to here ,Chris, and thanks.
Is it direct drive or is it belt drive?
Great job by the way. Really like it. Much better work than I could ever have managed.
It's belt drive, Ben.
I love McMaster!
What is the material that you used for the platten?
Well, that's it -- you've done it now. I bought the plans to get me started. I'll probably modify them a little, and I really like the idea of the larger belt size.
I almost bought the 6x80 at Grizzly this week while up near their Muncy, PA store. But it wasn't in stock and I really wanted a longer one. But the only longer options I found that were like the one in my dad's cabinet shop were also some serious cash. I think that building my own might just be the thing now that you have me thinking...
Outstanding!
Canapyboy,I used a piece of hardboard and a piece of orange laminate I had laying around. If you use MDF make sure you predrill your holes.Test them out on some scraps.
bjansen,thanks.
