so... have started on my next kenny m bow.
a good mate gave me a very high quality piece of curly maple

he is a guy who produced product for the music wood industry, problem was it was only 4" wide, 1" thick and 23" long. really wanted to build a bow from it.
so gathered up a pile of other left over scraps, some really good Yew- that was only about 18" long, some left over boards from my floor, some walnut off cuts from my first riser etc
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/woodselection-email_zpsbbd096fd.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/woodselection-email_zpsbbd096fd.jpg.html)
really had to think about it heaps- so that i minimised the waste, but this is what i have come up with so far...
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/risersflatview-email_zpsbcd36dbd.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/risersflatview-email_zpsbcd36dbd.jpg.html)
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/riserangleview_zps55988c9d.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/riserangleview_zps55988c9d.jpg.html)
gotta grind lams yet, and get the riser all cut out.
still 5 weeks of hunting season!so will find time where i can. :D :D
Now that combo looks sweet together.
When I was growing up in North Dakota, we always saved the leftovers from our dinners over the week. Then on Sunday the main meal was served at noon. But for supper we always had what was called "Seven Day" it was always my favorite supper.
Your description reminded me of that.
dude, that thing is gonna be a beauty. can't wait to see her done.
Very cool. My splices only look that good in my dreams. Nice.
man you are really steaming! All that work looks A1
Damn this "frankenbow" will look incredible!
Nice warm colors, will look great. Bue--.
Very nice, Wayne.
Thats going to be really nice
That is gonna be sweet!
wow ! great work,beautiful,
look forward to seeing it complete.
Going to be a beautiful bow can't wait to see it finished.
That's going to be a good one!
Very nice! That's a great piece of maple- can't wait to see it glued up
That looks sweet. I really like that maple. Cant wait to see her all finished up. I really like your splice too
wow! thanks guys :notworthy:
the trick is going to be to keep the belly splice lined up with the back splice- so it matches well.
thinking about a trick i saw that kenny did, where he drilled a small hole under the overlay area, and used a toothpick pegging everything together to keep everything in position, and then i thought maybe the same thing at the limb tips, beyond where i am going to cut it off.
any ideas/experience with this anyone?
the splice is going to be about 12" from the center of the bow- maple towards outside, yew at the riser, with yew cores.
thanks for looking fellas- means heaps an'heaps coming from you guys on the "bench" :)
Left overs are sometimes better than the main course. That is gonna be special.
Wayne, I'd make sure they are opposite, for strength and ease of alignment. So it makes an x on back and belly so to speak.
Looks great man!!
I got the toothpick idea from Roy. One or two into the riser and one at each tip keeps it all in line.
Dave.
I'm keeping a jealous eye on this one
great work and combination
looks great
Thats going to be a real pretty bow. Nice work  Bob
Thanks Kenny, real good idea....see that's why I come here :D so ...now you got my mind spinning- you think it will be strong enough, even with them opposite?
Ta again chaps!!!
Now I just gotta finish it without screwing it up.
Hey Dave , I guess that ol' fella has some good ideas- he sure has been around long enough to pick up a few :biglaugh:
He's OK, when he's not thumpin you. ;)
Dave.
Yep, should be good, just keep em on the thinner side. I'd stay under .030 or .040 and no worries!!
Damn you glass guys got me lost here...
Roger that Kenny! Thanks.
Hey I' m just an apprentice " glass guy" Roy :goldtooth:
Roy, that's bout half a 16th :bigsmyl:
Which is about twice of a 1/64 :biglaugh:
Which is approx 0.3969 mm :D
Metric marvels up here in Canada , eh!
NAH, this one lost me.
Wayne, I'd make sure they are opposite, for strength and ease of alignment. So it makes an x on back and belly so to speak.
X ??? Ya all making X rated bows now? :)
I love those colors. That will make a nice one!
Now don't you worry yourself none about x rated things Roy , you know your blood pressure won't allow it these days! :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
I had a pressure relief valve installed, Bobby:)
Nice wood combo, Wayne. That's gonna be sweet!
"I had a pressure relief valve installed, Bobby"
:saywhat: :saywhat: :saywhat: :jumper:
Combos look great. Splice is awesome. Keep pics coming....
Super job
You aint right Roy!
Back to the mans bow and off Roys health, beautiful color combination and great idea to use those scraps.
Keep up the good work!
-Jeremy :coffee:
Wow,looks awesome! I love the concept of utilizing what you have on hand. With a little imagination and skill you can make something beautiful from scraps!
Dennis
Sure would like to see more pictures of this one, I love the combo's
Mark
hows this one working out bud?
hey Craig, been working on it some, making a few changes to my form- just to make things a little easier to work with - not the shape!!
will post some pics as soon as i get it finished.
how are you guys keeping down there- getting cooler up here- might have to put on a T shirt tomorrow! :D
no shirts and still in shorts. wouldn't know it's winter. ;) lol
Was in the UP last weekend for a little ice fishing. Only about 3+ feet of ice on the smaller lakes. It got down to -17*F one night without the windchill. I had to pull a stocking cap over my ears for goodness sakes. All kidding aside, it's been a cold winter here, with 50% more snow than our yearly average. And the dnr wants me to think about spring turkey apps! Lol.
That's a great looking bow you have started there. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Any further along yet,fujimo?
had friends over for the last few days- and been doing some boat hunting- filling freezers.
they left this morning- so i will be getting right on it!!
i think wayne is hording this bow from us. been dying to see how it turns out.
sorry guys, have been working on it in bits and pieces- re-did my form, guess i put my brackets on the bottom form, and shoulda been on the top- so while i had the brackets all off i gave it a few good coats of verathane- to maybe stabalise the m/c a bit.
i really gotta finish it soon, i really want to use it for my spring bear hunt- and that is just around the corner!- 1st april!!! to 1st june
ok, here goes- worked till 1.30 last night up at 6.30 turn the oven off and cleaned it up this afternoon. really wanted to keep the splices in the right places, and didnt want the lams sliding down the ramps, so after some careful measuring, and dry runs- glued a block to the back glass- worked really well- will be doing that again.
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/endblock_zps4945615c.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/endblock_zps4945615c.jpg.html)
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/handledetail_zps0202a34d.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/handledetail_zps0202a34d.jpg.html)
nope thats not a gap in the glue line-i sanded the riser with some 36 grit paper- guess its just one of the grooves from the paper- nice strong glue joint :D - guess i will use a finer paper next time! :knothead:
and the toothpick- really made things so easy- its a keeper
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/toothpick_zpsbc996ec0.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/toothpick_zpsbc996ec0.jpg.html)
the maple came out a beautiful golden colour, with the smooth-on- really like it!
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/limbsplice_zps19d652ea.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/limbsplice_zps19d652ea.jpg.html)
so here is it cleaned up and ready to be turned into a bow
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/bow3_zpsa2689620.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/bow3_zpsa2689620.jpg.html)
Holy cow!!!
That looks amazing. Great work. I like the block at the end to keep it from sliding and the toothpick idea too.
looks awesome bro. looking forward to seeing it all finished up.
Got it all ground to shape tonight, will glue overlays on tomorrow, and finish it over the weekend.
The toothpick was an idea I got from that ol' fella in Pa.
Good idea, really stopped the slimed lams from sliding all over the place, the blocks worked very well too.
Can't you take a couple of days off work and get this bow done? ;) Suspense is killing us. Looking very nice. Bue--.
Looks awesome!!!!
Nice, Wayne..
Beautiful Wayne!
Get out of bed, Wayne.. The weekend is here.. :) Looking forward to seeing it become a bow.
Your really killing it!Great work!
Very nice!! Really like the spliced veneers in the limbs.
thanks all,
i too am looking forward to shooting it- am getting cracking with it!!
WELL, Wayne? :)
gotter all shaped up and finish sanded- put the first coat of finish on it last night late!!
put half a dozen shots thru it- pre finish- couldnt helpmyself
will put a pic up later- cos i want an opinion on something aesthetic
thanks
Don't forget the full draw picture.. :)
Wayne? Hello! :)
she's all done my friend... resolved the aesthetic issue myself- reshaped the riser a tad, had to restart the finish process...balls to the wall!!!
got a bunch( 8 or so of the wipe on poly) of coats on it- want to put final satin spray on tonight, then arrow rest- then done!!
string is ready!
was out scouting for bears this last weekend- also took down my stands for deer- might move one and try a spot for a bear.
want to use this bow for the bear!- if i get a shot at one- got till end of may!
looking forward to the pics wayne. of both bow and successful bear hunt.
Cool, looking forward to pictures.
X4
yup Craig, we have some really big black bear here- but i am just gonna try and just get one!!
not an accomplished bear hunter like you- first time for me- I'm a bear killin' virgin :D
so first reasonable bear that presents a clean shot, i will have a poke at.
not gonna get too fussy!
next year i might get a lot more selective!
aint too many bear where i come from- except my bare ass
This one is lookin good! Ready for some more pics!
Yupper, PICTURES would be sweet.. :)
at last... here we go fellas
hope its ok :dunno:
i sure learnt a lot doing this bow,
1.the "roybert indexing pin" ,
2.the end blocks to stop the lams sliding.
3.that the best nock overlay material is undoubtedly horn, i used Ipe on this one- but sure liked the horn better .
4. my nock overlays need to be 1/4" longer on the tapered side of the overlays- to look more balanced !
5.i sealed the riser and limb sides with superglue, first time- sure like that, what a difference to the finish!!!
6. will consider the i beam more on the next one, Holly would have looked better on this one-in fact Osage would have been the nicest, instead of plain ol' maple
7. the yew, curved insert in the riser could have been an 1/8th to a 1/4" closer to the back- will check out the final look with a pattern of the riser, when i lay out the next riser!
but all in all- i am happy with it- now time to quit fooling around and get back to a bunch of self bows i have been neglecting. :D
the riser

(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/6_zps894a4e62.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/6_zps894a4e62.jpg.html)
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/2_zpsf1273cf0.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/2_zpsf1273cf0.jpg.html)
the limbs- great advice from kenny- making an "X" rated splice alignment!
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/3_zpsefa02d8e.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/3_zpsefa02d8e.jpg.html)
this is how i like to do my string nocks- so the string angle is always good
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/4_zpscf305c6d.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/4_zpscf305c6d.jpg.html)
the nock overlay could be just 1/4" longer
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/5_zpsfa66fc29.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/5_zpsfa66fc29.jpg.html)
the more i work with this yew- the more i love it- so pretty and subtle- but i still also admire the wild, crazee beautiful burl lams etc, that folks use on here :)
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/10_zps762dbece.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/10_zps762dbece.jpg.html)
strung profile- i just love these kenny m bows- but then again...i dont know much about glass bows- i just know i love the fact that i am able to build a glass bow- and that it is a kenny-m! :D
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/9_zpsfc500327.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/9_zpsfc500327.jpg.html)
sorry about the long grass fellas- will get the wife on that right away
full draw- bad backlight-oops!
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/8_zps999835e7.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/8_zps999835e7.jpg.html)
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx309/mwnicol/7_zpsf186806d.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/mwnicol/media/7_zpsf186806d.jpg.html)
thanks all for coming along on this drawn out journey- i sure have enjoyed building this bow- will improve on the next one!
HOT DAMN!!! Wayne, that has to be one of the most beautiful bows I've ever seen! :clapper:
Nice work. It looks great.
Dave.
well done indeed wayne. well done.
Wow that's a nice one- love the way it's bending at full draw! Bet it really flings an arrow!
thanks guys- surely appreciated coming from you maestro's!
so help me here- just looking at the full draw pics for the first time, am i correct in saying that a powerlam would move the bend a bit down the limb, and give me slightly stiffer fades???right or wrong :dunno:
is that a good thing?
does that add to the leverage, and thus increasing performance???- but could that potentially be at the cost of some longevity?
it really does spit an arrow out- but that credit goes to kenny- for a great design.... apparently :D
Wayne, that is one good looking bow and if you are worried about the long grass, I got 2-3 ft of snow yet in my yard.I can see about shipping you some to cover that green grass. :goldtooth:
That is a seriously nice bow, love everything about it well done!
OH, I guess it's kind of ok..
Well ok, it's sharp as heck, Wayne. Nice job dude. ^5
Yeah Wayne! That bow came out looking fantastic!
Came out just great. :) Bue--.
Very nice Wayne! Yew is my favorite to use
Awesome...I love the color in the yew!!!!
Beautiful!!
Man that is one beautiful bow! Well done. :clapper:
Guys... Man comin from you fellas sure means a lot,
I still feel like such a rookie at times, everything that I have learnt has been on here, and from y'all :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
I truly do appreciate the comments, gives me some hope!

:wavey:
