I've used a water based stain on a selfbow.

I use truoil over water based and have found that only two or three coats of it will still allow a damp cloth to wipe off some of the stain, especially if you are buffing the dry oil with steel wool between coats.  So use at least 5 coats to seal properly.

Any wood sealer will work, Joe. Might be a bow but it's still wood. My favorite is Tung Oil. True Oil is very good also.
