A friend of mine has been wanting one of these short bows so I got started on one for him- the riser is wenge with a mosaic strip. It should finish 50-55#s@28" if all goes as planned. Here's a few pictures of my progress on the riser first.

Here is the riser before and after shaping.

Looking good Dave, can't wait to see more progress. That Wenge riser will look awesome. What color of glass?
Nice!

Jess he wants black glass and maybe a thumb rest. If I put one on it will probably be a piece of elk antler. The jury is still out on that at the moment.
Cool!!
Elk antler would be a nice touch, will look classy with the black glass. I have a couple going with Wenge and black glass at the moment.
Love that design. The mosaic is sweet, and I really like those shorties you've been making. When I finally get myself together and build a glass bow it'll be one of those. Can't wait to see more progress.
That's gonna be one cool looking bow.
Please keep posting pics as it comes to life.

Wenge ---a B. fill looks good though.
Sweet..
So here it is out of the form with the boogers knocked off- it still needs a couple of inches trimmed off both ends. I've never worked with wenge but I hear it takes a fair amount of grain filling- maybe similar to Purple Heart?

Boy those look awesome trux. I still say they look like a cape buffalo. Heck make an all black on and call it Black death in honor of that mighty beast.
But that one looks sweet for sure.
Dang seeing these shorties really makes me wanna try building one... Where to find plans for these though???
Yea my buddy wanted a lot of black with some red in the tip and riser overlays so this one may get that name. Got some rough shaping done.

two quick questions
1.do you find your accuracy is compromised with such a short bow
2.are they inherently more noisy
thanks
wayne
sorry one more...
what is the length of that beast!!!!

It doesn't compromise my accuracy...I'm not that good of a shot-lol. This one is like many recurves on the noise level- it does need the correct brace height and string silencers. Nock to nock it is 45"s- it uses a 40 inch string so amo would be 43"
Looking good. Oh you will probably be cussing before you get the wenge filled good. I think a acetone and smooth-on mix might do it though.
nice bow---I use the super glue jell squeegeed in to fill-sand -fill/sand/fill let the sawdust lay on it and help fill-
some wenge needs more attention--some less
Sweet!!! :notworthy:
Thanks for the tips on grain fillers- I've used the epoxy and acetone before with good results- maybe I'll luck out and have an easy piece of wenge to work with...
Wenge is not that bad. Just mix up some gloss T Bird and brush on a couple of coats and sand down. Do a third if needed.
So I've got all the overlays glued on- I did glue on a piece of elk antler for a thumb rest- it's a bit oversized at the moment but some sanding will take care of that.
All the overlay parts and pieces..

The bow seems to be setup with quite a bit of string follow (the tips look about 1-2" behind the front of the riser). Is this because it's so short?
What's a typical brace height for this bow?
Do you think it could be done with more reflex, or even just the tips even with the front of the riser if it were for a draw of less than 28"?

The 1-2"s is because of the length. It takes a 9" brace height. Stability becomes and issue with it if the limbs are longer- it will unstring itself because of that. I've never experimented with the design other to change it.
Can't wait to see how this one turns out. Great job Trux !!
It's looking good Trux

Man, hard not to love side profile curves like that.
Finally got some time to work on the bow. I got the riser shaped and started blending in the overlays. Next come the tips...

Love it!
I always love your mosaics, Trux! :clapper:
Man someone should be a happy camper. THAT IS REALLY GOOD LOOKING WENGE.
Nice one Dave! You need to move back up this way and teach this old dummy how to do those mosaics.
That is AWESOME David!
Thanks guys! I see some grain filler in my future with the wenge but it should look good once the finish hits it. If all goes well I should have it done in plenty of time for Xmas. Jess I'll have to track you down next time I'm in town.
That wenge rocks David
:clapper:
Man that looks good!
I really like your work, that's going to be a beauty.

Well I got the nocks cut in and braced- it's right at 56#s@28" now. My buddy was wanting one between 50-55#s so once I'm done sanding I should be right in there. Here's a picture with a ruler to put it into perspective.... Down to the detail work now

Finished the tiller and limb alignment- had to try it out. It shoots pretty nice.

Man that thing is awesome. Amazing work!! Got a shot at full draw? I love seeing how these things bend, quite different than what I'm used to!
Excellent work. Bue--.

That's a great looking bow! The woods are awesome, and that grip looks sweet. Great job!
Here's a full draw shot drawn to ~28"s.

That's so cool! Super nice job on that, looks like those tips could take an even longer draw, crazy! Thanks for sharing!
Sweet!!! I got to try a snubnose build soon.
Getting close and no worries about it not being ready for Christmas. Just need to let the finish cure some and add the arrow rest.

Man that finish makes it pop! Nice job
Very nice Dave. What did you use to fill the grain on the Wenge? Reason I ask I have one going with a wenge riser.
I still remember your first couple of bows doesn't seem that long ago. You have really got the building em down.
Jess I used super glue- one thick coat that got sanded off then I just needed to redo the areas that still needed additional filling. I've used epoxy/acetone before with good results- don't know which one works better. I still learn something new with each one.
Man that riser is super sweet. terrific bow.
Here's a few pics with the finish cured. I'll string it up tomorrow a break it in before my bud gets it. He wanted a black bow with some red accents and I think he will be happy with it- he should be surprised.

Hell that thing is freaking terrific man... can`t find the right words- not caused by foreign language probs!
That`s propably the most you can get out of wenge and the mosaic is a perfect underline; combined with such a shorty it`s really close to leaving me speechless... I wanna touch it!
Spectacular!
Wow ! Those close-ups look awesome.
Great looking bow! Well done as usual!
Trux -
Have you ever though of making that snubnose with just a rounded banana shaped riser and no arrow shelf?
No only am I interested, I decided to post so that I can follow this discussion...
Thanks all! Ken- I never thought of that... Here's the last picture before it gets wrapped up and given away.

Great work Trux. Beautifully done.
Outstanding........
He unwraps that he'll have more than a smile on his face it's a real beauty love the riser.
That thing is truly awesome! Fantastic craftsmanship! Looks flawless! A definite work of art! Looks like it would be a struggle to get the lams glued up and in place.
a thing of beauty for sure !!
great job Trux (as usual) :notworthy:
Amazing bro
Thanks- my buddy was surprised to say the least... He could not figure out why I was putting him off every time he brought up having me build him a snubnose-lol
Mike I have to use clamps, zip ties and inner tube bands to get it in the form- the first one was a real battle.
Man those are awesome looking little bows. Trux what is the brace of one of them?

Kelly right at 9"s.
