Title: bendy- spliced billets
Post by: fujimo on November 17, 2013, 12:43:00 PM
so.. has anybody built a bend thru the handle( very slight bend!!) from spliced billets- and would it be possible

if the osage back was sinewed, with extra in the handle- might that work.
good smooth on glue for the splice- maybe the entire handle with a sinew wrap.
i just have a nice set of billets here- and i really prefer shooting and building bend thru the handle bows-

any thoughts

It might be possible if the splice is cut horizontal rather than vertical. I've never tried it but if I did  would wrap the handle with hemp cord set in Massey finish. Make that your handle wrap. It is what I use on all my bows now and started using it on a spliced boo backed hickory/ipe tri lam("Trouble Maker") I had a hard time keeping together. She is still together and shooting well.

I've done it... in a yew English longbow for instance.. basically a bend through the handle 'design' but tillered so that it bends right up 'to' the handle, but not 'through' it. I haven't done it in bows over 60 lbs though. I've used a regular z-splice with both Resorcinol and Smooth On for glues.

I have made several simi bendy handle osage bows out of billets. I use urac for glue which is pretty much bomb-proof.

Wal-Mart. It comes in tan and brown. I use regular 2ton epoxy thinned with acetone to seal it.

Wayne, 80# fishline backing works perfect, you should be able to get that locally, and I set it with CA glue.
I've been splicing some of the Yew stash for some BBY's later this winter.
Cheers.
Bert.

Did it once. I wrapped the handle in hemp cord and soaked the crap out of it with glue. Far as I know its still a bow. Matt Wiricki has had it for a few years now. It was a 51" ntn osage bow.

fujimo, craft stores often have it for sale.  Hemp is what all the kids make their bracelets with.
