Title: Bamboo backed bow
Post by: Rays Arrow on October 11, 2013, 10:40:00 PM
Going to make a bamboo backed bow.  I am thinking of going with ipe and bamboo.  Been reading the forums on here and looking at what is out there.  Have any of you seen the "hunting the bambbo backed bow" DVD. Is it any good do you have any suggestions on videos or other info in building bamboo backed Bose
Thanks,
Ray

That video is awesome. I would use Osage instead of IPE. Osage is the king of bow woods in my opinion.

Don't be hatin on ipe Roy just cause you had a tiny little bitty allergic reaction to it..lolol  I use Ipe and I really like it.  I'll let Roy tell you about the possibility of an allergic reaction to it...lol

I've heard nothing but good things about the "Hunting the Bamboo Backed Bow" DVD, though I haven't seen it myself.

I think ipe and Osage are both excellent choices, but it seems like ipe is a lot easier to find, at least where I am.

Here's a bamboo backed ipe build along:

X2 on the DVD
I like IPE but have trouble getting good wood. May be done with it for a while.
Got some Osage to work.

Great DVD. Inspired me to try my first bbo, and helped insure it was a shooter.

I liked the DVD too; he's very thorough on making the form, prepping the bamboo, the glue-up, etc.  I wish he'd have been as thorough on showing how he tillers them, but that's just me.  Roy had a great step by step build along on a BBO tri-lam recently.  You should be able to find it using the search feature.  All of Sam's build alongs are terrific as well as entertaining, too.  Good luck!

One update to dean's work.  That video shows moso bamboo.  The stuff is too soft and will eventually fail.  Find some madake and you will be much happier with the results. I get mine from Yumi archery 912 586-2763. Grown in Georgia!
