You have the wood to work with. I wish you luck on your venture.

im pretty excited about it. i haven't really shot that bow in a while since i got this wood bow addiction.  the icing on the cake is i actually  split out and debarked the staves and billets myself, something i never got to do cause we don't have any osage, and i haven't been able to find any locust i can cut.  my bow wood supplier invited me to his place in ohio to hunt this last week, and while the weather didn't make for great hunting, i did have a great time playing with wood and shooting.  i still gotta finish cleaning up the ends of the staves and re-seal them.

Did you take the sapwood off the osage?

yes, except for the last couple inches of the stave as you can see in the picture, was kindof difficult to get done due to time restraints and his shaving horse was broken down, so i didn't have a good way to secure the staves to get the ends cleaned up.  i just leaned them against a tree and worked with my draw knife. i can secure the stave better now that im home so i can finish chasing the ring all the way to the end.  all the osage staves are worked down to a ring, but im going to go after a better one on each when i get to it.

Good man. Sapwood left alone can check and tear right through the stave. I leave the bark and sapwood on and have very few issues. Peeling it all off is the way to go, but I wont do that with the amount of staves I have laying around.

yeah the log had been laying around a while.  had some powder post beetles in the sapwood.  no holes past the first ring of heartwood though.  i took it all off to be sure the wood was good.  two of the staves he had already worked down and sealed about a year ago.  pretty excited about the locust too, was very straight grained and clean with great rings, he is a log buyer by trade and knows wood, said he's never seen a better piece of locust for bows.  finally an excuse to do a takedown.  probably never would have had the guts to cut a stave in half.
