Title: couple light ones.
Post by: bigbob2 on August 31, 2013, 02:37:00 AM
couple shots of two new light weight bows just finished. Both about 30# 2 28''Red one is Blue gum/ silver ash in riser, and the other is Tasmanian blackwood/ black wattle.Red one has faux snake skin  backing. Kinda ok , but doesn't seem to like finish. Tried Minwax wipe on and even Trueoil but still looks dull.  (http://i1256.photobucket.com/albums/ii485/bigbob292/001-16.jpg) (http://s1256.photobucket.com/user/bigbob292/media/001-16.jpg.html)

thanks fellas! Crooked stick --Blue gum came from relative with his own chain saw mill. Usually most gums have too much resin, but this one was ok. Trux , will post some full length shots when I take couple shots.

Hi bob, very nice bows, well done. Do you think you could make a selfbow out oF blackwattle and or blue gum. Here in south africa we have lots of both

I think Black wattle would make a great self bow. There are two problems though; here in Australia we have some like over 900 species of Acacia wattle] and about half a dozen or more known in their respective localities as 'Black Wattle' The 'true' Black wattle is Acacia Melanoxylon. Most gums aren't really suitable for consideration in making self bows, due to high resin counts, and less than desirable qualities in stress and strain tests. With black wattle also, it , at least here, is often riddled with borer holes making getting a suitable length quite hard. Reckon you would find a good bit you're in with a big chance of a successful bow. I know it makes great lams.

Just remembered, 'spotted gum' but don't recall the genus name is a gum used here with moderate success. I will chase up the scientific name and post it.

Looks great Bob.  If they shoot half as good as the one I got from you then whoever gets them will be very pleased.  I like the all dark one.

andrie- was just gonna mention white stinkwood, but then saw your signature. might also try some of the pecan nut orchards/growers, they often thin/ prune trees.

of course all the fruit trees.
i believe they were growing some osage down there too- it was being sold as hedges to keep the bad ou's out. believe there was a nursery around P.e. selling it- will ask my mum again!

my grandpa used a tree called a "vier hoek"
had 4 berries in cluster, and lotsa thorns- know that wont help much!!- but it was pretty good selfbow wood.
g'luck

Good to see you posting again. still haven't forgotten your earlier proposal about bows, but going through a rough period at the moment financially. Had big expenses on my van, blew up a new compound [yeah I know!] and orders drying up as we get closer to xmas.
