Posted a couple days ago about sawing up some pecan logs I have. I have considered splitting up into staves but after reading several post I am concerned. These logs have lain outside on the ground about 3 weeks and have seen where folks say use for firewood that they are probably too rotten to use for bow material. What is your thoughts? They are too large to move by hand, I used the tractor and front bucket just to put them on a trailer. They appear fine to me but I am far from an expert on wood. Hate to spend time splitting or having sawn just for little projects. I just want to make bows! :pray:
Split it and see if there is any discoloration. If not split it into staves, remove the bark, seal the ends and get them under cover and off the ground. It might still be good.
Just try. Splitting is fun and good exercise. Pecan makes great smoker wood. I would guess they are fine if only on the ground for 3 weeks.
I am in the same boat. I cut a BIG white oak in April. I immediately split into staves and put them in my basement but left the bark on because I like the cambium still on the back. I figured I would let them dry a little. Well last week I checked them and they looked awful. I immediately took the bark off and they are discolored and damp. I am letting them dry again but I don't know if they are good or not. I may try to shave down to the next ring. The growth rings have a lot of late growth which is supposed to make for a good bow. Any input would be helpful.
