Title: Glass color choices?
Post by: longrifle on August 11, 2013, 09:49:00 PM
Are there any other choices in glass besides the clear, black, brown, and white? I have seen some older bows with grey or olive green, just wondering. Also is Gordon's the only glass maker? Just looking for other options.

Unfortunately, there's not too many choices out there and as far as I know Gordon's is the only manufacturer, so we're at their mercy.  I imagine laminations for use in traditional bows is such a small part of their business that maybe we should be happy with what we can get.

Great Northern and Northern Mist joined forces a couple years ago and convinced Gordon's to do a run of green glass for them.  Those two bowyers are the only two of that have that glass and I doubt they'll part with any.

Kenny M is now offering a new lighter brown color of glass.

I second the green glass, you see it on the Bear bows I think its called 'Grayling green' and I do remember seeing it on the Great Northern 'Old School' limited edition a while back.
It is a great color, I have always wondered why its not a regular offering.

This isn't perfect or even the ideal but, one can paint glass and it seems to work pretty well.  I first tried it when some clear glass was just to streaky to use.  I sanded the glass as normal painted very lightly sanded and sprayed finish over it, it has held up for over a year now does have a chip to two where it was dropped. Just food for thought.

Sadly I think what's been said already is accurate. Might be interesting to call Gordon's and see how many strips an order needs to be for them to run a custom color. I've seen some grey glass and its really nice.

Yeah I thought about painting but then what do you do with the edges? I guess we just live with the choices we have until someone gives Gordon's a run for there money.
