Just love making these bows. Pay attention, Artty Boy:)
66 tip to tip, Boo backing, Elm core lam already thickness tapered, and an Osage belly.

Flipped the tips again.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7651.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7651.jpg.html)
Moved the mid limb posts in another 1/2" more towards the riser compared to the last one and added 1/2" more to the top of the end limb posts. That will make her even more curvy:)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7652.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7652.jpg.html)
Clamped every two inches, and back and belly are padded to prevent clamp damage... Unibond800 glue, not TBIII:)

oh man...you are a bow building machine...definitely paying attention, after the day I had this is what I needed to see
Take notes. LOL...
pretty much all I can do right now so Im taking all the notes I can
You & Denny are having all the fun without me.
That new brown glass Kenny has would look great on that thing
Ya Robbie an thanks for the Osage and Boo ya left here. Could ya order more, please LMAO :bigsmyl:
I don't thunk so, Johnny Boy:)
Had to take a break from the bow shop and have more fun:)
LOL Roy You drive 3 fingers under.
You feeling alright ole man?.... two bows in one month...you doing more than just the Coors light? Lol :help: :jumper: the elm outta be a good core ;)
Roy - I am going to ask what is probably a dumb question and is obvious but it would not be the first time so here goes...
Can you share the purpose in flipping the tips when the bow form will make that bend during glue up?
Thanks...
Roy I don't want it to go to waste.
Cameron, it just gives the end of the tips a little sexy bend. If I hadn't flipped them, the ends of the limbs would have been straighter.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7623.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7623.jpg.html)
Robbie I hain't touched it, that's your material..
Roy with all those sexy curves your wife is going to start thinking you are getting a 70 year itch.
Looks real good, I'm liking the lines on it. I'm still working on the mid limbs of that hickory bow and have the hinge pretty much worked out of the left one. I'll send you some new pics tomorrow.
Roy, those tri-lams are addicting aren't they!
I don't know I'll ever make a normal backed bow again. There's nothing like those nice curves you can put into them.
That one is really coming out well.
Now you just need to cut in a mean shelf ... All the way to center and get an elevated rest! Lol
Roy, is this a 66" with handle in the middle? Or is it like Dean Torges with upper limb longer? Nice looking bows.
Thanks Keith
Oh geeze Ben, you don't know how long I worked on him to get him to forgo the centershot thing :nono:
Keith it's 66 and equal length limbs. I don't always agree with Dean and Bowjunkie. I've seen their bows:) LMAO
Benny Boy, real wood bows shouldn't be cut to center. But yes I love tri lams..
Took her out of the clamps tonight, OMG it's leaning more towards one of those glass bow profiles:) What have I done wrong? :)
But I forgot my stack thickness.. LOL
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7658.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7658.jpg.html)
Have the horn tip over lays glued on with smooth on, not cheap epoxy, Art.. HINT there:)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7660.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7660.jpg.html)
Cut these out of a piece of longer cow horn, so I had to improvise a bit. Decided to leave a sharp crown on the top center, which ya can't really see just yet. I think it will look cool.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7661.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7661.jpg.html)
wow Roy..really rubbing it in huh :) Im still reeling from the effects of my mishap ...LOL that is a beautiful profile and those nocks gonna look cool as heck
Roy, you don't have to agree with me. If I thought you must, I'd help you understand why doing it your way could be improved upon
Watch out for the silver bullet...it'll wreck bows :knothead: looks like its time for a handle..what ya putting on this one?
Either cocobolo or bocote. Kenny has some in the mail for me:)
Ain't that there fancy wood what they use in them high tech glass bows? Might as well order some glass too and be done with it :)
LMAO..
I wanna show em how to make a real good looken bow:)
Hey Ol Man, I don't mind being one of the last to get one of your bows, cause they just keep getting better and better. So is that one mine?
If you require more butter than that for your toast please holler back. Did I mention, ya the man!
Your on the list, Art. Not saying what list though:) I'm giving this one to a good friend in Ohio, he hooks me up with free Osage:)
Kenny?
I was working on an Ohio osage connection for us this morning RoyBoy, thought I was on to something good, but it wasn't meant to be. I'll keep looking...
Yupper on Kenny. He has 60 acres of Osage:)
If it's the same list I use then I'm screwed, aren't I?
LOL
Aw heck least your on a list
Thanks, don't think I wanna go much more deflex/reflex than that. I might get accused of using a black glass lam in dah middle:) Hey dats an idear:)
Go more. More deflex, more reflex. And shorter too. String angle will let ya then. Tri-lam? No problem. They're bendy little suckers.
Then do a recurve.
Shake it up, sweet pea :)
Ya been dranken beers, hain't cha? LOL, me too... Thinking my next bow will just be a straight D bow. Need to mellow it out a bit..
Got the tips roughed in and the facets in, took pictures but just too darn tired to load them now..
No I ain't been drinkin'. Been working double shifts all week so far. No time for drinkin'... or bowmakin' unfortunately.
I'm serious. Varying designs and pushing limits improves us. With your draw length, draw weight, the material you're using, current skill level, and TIME on your hands, you've got a LOT of room to play.
For instance, maybe try something with about the same amount of reflex as this last one, but with the mid-limb blocks pushed out further towards the tips, and oh, I don't know, 56-58" long. Let's see whatcha got
I'm with Jeff Roy...I wanna see what ya got ,and what your made of(besides beer..lol) :saywhat:
.....and the race is on :archer2:
I hain't gonna race, that's how accidents happen:)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7664.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7664.jpg.html)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7663.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7663.jpg.html)
Roy. WOW. That looks awesome. I'm envious
Lookin good Roy.
When you take it off of the form is there much tillering to be done or is it close off of the form?
It's very close off the form, only minor tillering left to do.
Can you tell me how much taper and the lam thickness please. You have got me itching to try.
Roy nice tips.
Another nice job, Roy. How do you taper your core lam? I'm just curious if you use a jig or something. If you have posted it before, I missed it.
Width is 1 1/4 at flares and I hold that 1 1/4 width out for 6 more inches then do a straight taper to 1/2 wide at tips. The Osage belly was 1/4 thick on this bow and the last tri lam I made. 3/8th thick Osage then tapered an 1/8th would be better. The lam taper depends on how heavy a bow you want and the core material you use. But I'd say a 1/8th taper from the flares to the tips is good. This is only my third tri lam so I'm not all that experienced yet with different core materials. Example, I used ERC for a core lam on my first tri lam and it came out too light for weight. I should have made that bow 1/4 wider all over. The second tri lam I used wild cherry for a core lam and it came out too heavy for me, so I had to tiller off 10 pounds of weight to get it to 45 pounds. But it's all good fun trying:)
Thanks Robbie and ya gotta find more cow horn, Buddy Ole Pal... :)
Ya missed it, Kenny and I hain't gonna type it out again...
LOL @ Kenny:)
The best thing, Kenny is to buy tapered lams. Kenny M on here sells them, they are awesome lams, priced right, and Kenny ships his orders out the next morning. And since yunzs both are Kenny's, he might cut ya discount:)
The second tri lam I made, I winged my own lams on my edge sander, then a hand sander. They were not perfect, but the bow came out pretty darn sweet for Redneck lams:) I was going to buy a thickness planer for making lams, but after buying the new tractor, Momma frowned upon dat... So I have a bench top 18" belt sander, my plan is to mount it under my work bench upside down and build a platform under it to slide same thickness lams through it with pattern lams of various thickness taper under my lams. Stand by for that project, otta be a real redneck lam grinder I invent. LMAO.. :help:
I am trying to make a table saw sled for cutting my limb tapers. I will let you know how that works. Your right, maybe I can get in touch with Kenny (you know all us Kennys are good guys) and apply for my kinship discount. :bigsmyl:
Thanks for your help.
Hold on, Kenny. I didn't say Kenny M was a good guy, I just said he sells good lams...
So I guess he is kinda Ok:)
Now I can glue the rise on her tonight, look out bow shop, here I come.. Yee-Haw:)
Thanks so much Mr. KcKenzie
I got a package from Kenny today too.
It had some glass in it for one of them thar high engineered bows.
Shouldn't you be chasing a ring on your Osage stave, Mr glass boy:)
Look at the riser material, wow.

I should, but I set that project aside for now before I totally destroy it. The bow I just got materials for from Kenny is going to a friend of mine from work.
That sure is nice riser wood!
That riser is gorgeous!!!
Awesome looking riser Roy! Looks like granadilo. I just got some myself.
That is going to be sweet.
Still in the bow shop. Have it rasped down closer to final shape. Covered in dust and the empty's are piling up:) I love this retirement.
David, it's Bocote from Sister McKenzie :)
Got the riser and one tip roughed out tonight.

amazing piece of wood and the tips are cool..kind of looks like a toenail or talon..cant decide but anyways it is amazing what a old retired guy can do
Love that Bocote Roy!
WOW! I love Bocote - It really adds a special look. Can't wait to see the finished bow...BTW I am a self proclaimed tri-lam safety inspector. For you own safefy I think it best that I shoot that one for a few months to make sure it is safe for you. I am only trying to look out for your welfare. :D
Roy , the redder stuff is coco, bocote dark...
Lookin good !
Thanks guys, have a question! Is Bocote hard to get a finish sealer on? Any suggestions? Ya think tung oil will adhere to it?
Roy, I don't know about tung oil but Tru-oil wont dry over bocote or coco.I seal it with epoxy before the Tru-oil. Some say shellac will work but I have never tried it. Beautiful bow!! Bob
Roy, I had a damaged riser, bocote I believe, the bowyer said he used spar urethane for finish. I tried it a couple of times and it wouldn't set up properly. I emailed him again and he suggusted a light coat of spray shellac first then the spar urethane. That worked for me. Some say Deft works too. Great Looking bows your cranking out.
Try Thunderbird, Roy. It cures over all those oily woods like nuthin'... exceptionally durable and produces a professional quality finish too. Your bows are good enough now... they deserve it :)
Roy, I use Thunderbird too with no problems.
I have also used super glue to seal it before I put the oil on it. I put 2-3 coats of super glue and sand between coats.
Ok then Mr. Bowjunkie, when it's ready to be sprayed, I'm coming to your shop to drink your beer while I watch you spray my bow.... Do you have the satin Thunderbird? I don't like a high gloss finish on my bows. Then while it's drying, you and I can grind out some lams on your fancy thickness sander:) What's ya thunk bout dat, Bowjunkie-son? :wavey: :goldtooth:
Thanks guys.
Hey Bowjunkie, you better take Roy up on that offer! Just can't pass up those good deals.

Get yer scrawny little butt up here then and lets do it. You can have all my beer. I don't want it... gluten free nowadays.
Spraying your bow will take 3-4 days, so unless you plan to stay... you won't be taking it home with ya.
Ya got an extra room? :) Why so long to spray.
I spray 3-4 heavy coats on it the first day to fill up the grain in the wood, let it cure at least 24 hours. Then sand it to level up the finish, steel wool, spray a couple more coats... a day later check it again. If I'm happy with the finish, it's done, if not, sand, spray, etc. til it's good.
If you want, we can work on it the first day, then you can leave it here and I'll finish it up for ya.
Must be nice to have a friend. Even better, a friend with beer! :readit: Art B
Geeze Jeff, I'm just maken a hunten bow, not a showbow. I'll just finish it here. Thanks anyways. We went fishen tonight, no bow work..

That's funny! :biglaugh:
Roy, T-bird is a very effective finish for hunting bows. The most durable of anything I've used, and no glare. I use satin.
You don't make bows for show? Umm, actually, ya kinda do. You show them here dontcha?
Any time we present someone a bow we made for them, it's shown. Any time we post pictures of them on the internet, hand them to someone to inspect or adore, they're shown. Any time we admire our own work during a hunt or while shooting, it's shown... and it's generally been my goal to show the best I'm capable of... even if nobody but me will ever see it.
I understand son:)
Ah-ight.
So whatcha gonna do to that bow today? Take lots of pics and post em if yer gonna tiller it. I'm stuck at work all day... double shift... so I have to experience bowmaking vicariously through you :)
Wife is off this weekend so we are putting vinyl siding on our 12 x 16 shed today, then do the other 10 x 12 shed tomorrow. Tired of painting them every few years.. Won't be back on the bow till Monday, I'm letting the Osage season some more:)
Roy I had very good luck spraying Bullseye shellac over oily woods before Tru-oil.
Drys fast and anything will stick to shellac.
I have a few scrap pieces of the bocote from cutting out the riser, I'll play around with that and see what happens with tung oil. Might just order some TB. I have a good spray gun and used to paint cars. The heck with Bow junkie :) :)
Anyone ever use conversion varnish? I seen a bow done with it a while back, it was an awesome satin finish.
Bow work has been put on hold for a few days as I have outside work that needs completed. Thought I was supposed to be retired.
The heck with Bowjunkie huh? Wish I'd have seen that post before I spent the last hour answering all your finishing questions :banghead:
Bowjunkie:: Send him to sister McKenzie to show him the errors of his ways :smileystooges:
Yup , send him, my list has 21 names on it and they are all -- ROY...

Well my list has 42 Kenny's on it, so there son:)
LOL
Good. I guess that means I've moved down to #43.
No, your # 1 on another list:)
THERE'S MORE THAN ONE LIST?!?!?!?!?!?!?! :scared:
Oh well, it's nice to be #1 in someone's eyes ;)
You ride him cowboy:) LOL

Had the bow to 18 inches last night, looking sweet, forgot to take pictures. Looking like about 50+ pounds will be the final weight.
You like that pic, don't ya Roy.
It's all done on the tree...

Where's the money? :dunno:
Man that is nice
Money shot comes later, who's gonna snap a picture of the money shot at midnight? Momma would kill me if I woke her up for that.. There would be a new meaning to the word suppository:) LMAO
How bout a picture of it at full draw on the tree?
Is the top limb to the right?
Yup top is right.
How about a full draw video:)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNkJVBckKh0&feature=youtu.be
Bottom limb seems a tad stiff on ya, but other than that it's ok I guess :)
I'll check it:) Was late when I finished it and had a few Coors:) I guessed at the string hold, it looks like I could have been holding just a tad too high.. I haven't shot it yet, need to put about a 100 arrows through her and check the tiller again.
I see it to Jeff, stiff as a board. Tell Santa Clause thanks for helping with the full draw video Roybert!
You guys better get glasses, it's fine and my hand was a good inch too high..
Geeez Roy, don't ever smile. might break sumthin
:goldtooth:
That's the late night silver bullet tiller right there.... i dont think you could tiller one without it
Roy, I already have glasses... otherwise I wouldn't have saw it tip in your hand a wee bit as you approached full draw ;)
I guess it's OK.
It might have tipped because the center of the handle is still square and it was digging into my hand there 4 eyes:) But I don't feel or see no tippen. I got the TB ordered but won't have it till the end of next week. Guess I'll have to start another bow while I wait:)
This retirement is tuff work...
I really feel for ya... ya bum. I'm gonna keep working overtime and stockpiling bow wood til I retire so I'll have enough to last me. I just got home from working a double and found two yew staves leaning against the back door
Well put my name on one of them:)
Nah, sorry, this is selfbow wood. You wouldn't be interested :)
I made one yew self bow already son.
Good call Jeff. You'd be down there every weekend until "he" got it done. Just not worth it! :knothead:

Chicken Hawk, remind me to smack ya when I see ya tomorrow at the WV shoot:)
Sweet...I'm ready for some live action rib jousting :smileystooges: :biglaugh:
Punch him in the nose for me boardhawk! You know the routine!
Did ya forget about this one Roy? :saywhat:
No, just been busy with other things that need done. I did about 10 scrapes on the bottom limb to make Jeff and Pearly happy:) Put 50 arrows through her, and I have it final sanded and the Bocote riser looks so awesome. I can't decide if I want to cover it up with a leather grip or just stick on an arrow rest.
Looks like a keeper...great work
Final sanding done, just love the Bocote riser. Decided not to even stain this bow, so I put a coat of tung oil on it last night. The Bocote took the tung oil very well, I was surprised.

Well done Roy!
Eh.... it's alright I suppose... if ya like that sort of thing ;)
I don't know if I would cover a good looking piece of wood either Roy.
I've seen that piece of bocote in person and those pics aren't doing it any justice....that's gonna finish off real sweet buddy
yum!
Great looking bow!
How is this for high gloss? LOL, that is the tung oil before I wiped it off.

Beautiful :clapper:
Holy Crap I haven't checked this one in a while. Damn Roy that looks great. I really like her curves and its hard to beat bacote. You can just go ahead and sent it to me. I guess I could lower my standards and shoot it a time or two...lolol
s'pose its passable. :knothead:
Looking okay I guess, just like I like em, slim in the middle with broad curvy hips. ;) Bue--.
Bue - I see what you mean.
As nice as that bow looks with the handle. I think she should be naked Why don't you try to stripling the grip. Bet it would make her pop.
Decided I didn't like the plain finish. So I sanded off the tung oil and stained just the boo a light golden oak. The first coat of tung oil on the oak made her pop.
I guess it's ok:)

Humbled once again. Always cool to see a master at work. She's a dandy Roy. Keep 'em coming..to me!
Roy, why is the handle shifted above the center of the riser? Where is the center of the bow in relation to the center of the riser piece? And to the handle?
I remember some of your previous bows were the opposite... with the handle shifted BELOW the center of the riser, and I guess I'm wondering what you use to determine handle and riser position... and why you wouldn't center the handle on the riser, and both of them at the apex of the deflex? To me it would feel weird shooting with the thickest part of the grip at the heal of my hand instead of in the center of my palm, since that's how the hand is shaped.
I would also wonder whether you glued the bow up symmetrical? If not, what difference is there?
Actually the leather grip is only 3 inches long, it was a scrap piece laying around that I wanted to use up, I'm going to take it off and put on a 4 inch grip. Yesterday was a long Coors light day, I should have not gone out to the bow shop so late:) The riser is laid out even and grip centered, the bottom limb is 1/2" shorter.
Been catching up on the posts I've missed the last couple of weeks. I love the way this one turned out, Roy.
ok gotcha
I've spent all moring in the shop so far... CLEANING. It sucks but ya gotta do it once in a while I guess. I actually found a bunch of stuff I forgot I had :) I was even into some boxes that were still packed up from when I moved, what? 5-6 years ago? lol
Momma has been gone since Thursday morning, so me and the ole dog have been batching it... So needless to say I spent this morning cleaning house:) LOL
Wheres the money? Everything else is OK I guess
