Title: What do you do with your scrap wood?
Post by: halfseminole on July 30, 2013, 03:20:00 AM
I have to make up wooden nocks and footings for my cane arrows, and I see people cut chunks out of risers, et cetera all the time.  Where do those scraps go, and if you're tossing or burning it would you mind saving me some?  I expect to pay for this, but it struck me that you guys go through wood all the time-and waste not, want not.

It should be a while before I can pay properly for a batch, and I'm completely not picky on wood types.  I just hate to see anything wasted.

I have a box full of riser cut-outs etc. in the shop and replace it with a bigger one from time to time^^
If there wasn`t that ocean between I`d send you some! (but don`t worry I dont burn shedua, rosewood and other fine woods...)

What's the minimum size you need? I generally burn anything that doesn't suit my purposes, but I could start setting some stuff aside. I'd send it to you for the cost of shipping.

I have a bunch of Osage and Hickory pieces laying around that I would be happy to send you. PM me your address and I'll get it out to you asap.

It is always with deep regret when I carry my scrap wood bin out to the burn pile. I salvage everything I can but some of it has to go, very sad, osage is magic.

Osage and hickory scraps get burned at my place.
In the smoker...  :D

I burn 95% of it. You can only keep so much around after so many bows before it has to go. Osage burns long and hot.

I can make a nock out of something as small as 3/8" by 3/8" by 1" but a little more room is normally nice for working.  Longer pieces like that I can make footings out of.  Bowjunkie, I'll PM you when I get some saved up for shipping.

I understand you can only keep so much.  Shoot, if I didn't constantly chew through my leftovers with this project or that one I'd be murdered by my wife for hoarding.  But most of what I have is completely inappropriate-aspen is not a good wood for footing or nocks, and most of my poplar is already spoken for.  All my oak is mostly spalt for my powderhorns.  I did a lot of woodworking, but this is the first time getting into bowmaking and having to worry about the tensile strength of wood.

I'll hook ya up, Ed. And you need to delete that picture and reload it in a smaller format. I'll get you a box full sent out in a day or two.

If you're ever near Indianapolis, come by, I got a whole woodpile of osage.  I throw a lot of it away unfortunately.  I could never burn it all considering I don't have a fireplace and can only camp so much.  But we have a waste to energy plant here so it doesn't end up in a landfill at least.

Here's a resized picture of the nock I posted before.  I'm considering making some other mosaics as well, but time always gets me.  I only have so much, and so many projects to complete.  Been trying to get the most pressing one off my plate to let me concentrate full time on woodworking.  I should have some pics later of a set of Turkish nocks I'm making from spalted live oak burl.  Supremely lucky find while cutting firewood.

I do all kinds of stuff with my scrap wood--mosaics, One Rings replicas, tankards and other drinking vessels, cross bow trigger mechanisms, box turkey calls, wok spatulas, forks, mini bows and mouse traps, arrow footings, etc.

Yes, the mouse trap drew blood...mine!  I used to have a video of it.  I'm going to have to make another one just so I can make another video.

Another thing I do with my boo cut offs is practice doing different stain/dye jobs on them.

Very nice knives!  I should post the one I just built, but it's late, I've been tying knots for hours and I have an appointment in the morning.  I shall post it then.

Thanks a ton!  You don't think about doing things like this until you realize that nothing you can buy within reason is geared toward your size.  It's been a real eye-opener.

Made it just fine, been tied up with new house utilities.  First time I've seen a piece of osage in real life, thanks!

Got a feeling it's gonna make some very nice arrow footings.  With the water lines dug and hopefully finished off tomorrow, I'm looking to put up some sycamore hopefully this weekend or so.  Got some black walnut to take down as well.  Maybe now the "honey-dos" will ease up until I get a little put away.
