66 tip to tip, Osage belly slat, Wild Cherry core lam, backed with Boo. Shooting for 45 pounds at 27.5" draw, that's plenty for my old A$$. 1 1/4 wide at flares tapered to 1/2 at tips, 1/4 thick Osage belly slat, Wild Cherry core lam is 3/16th tapered to 3/32nd at tips. Glued her up tonight.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/2.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/2.jpg.html)
Flipped the tips back to 7 inches on the belly slat and core lam.. It's 28 inches from flares to tips, placed the mid limb posts at 16 inches from the tips. That is a tad more deflex than I normally do. I just love how well and easy these tri lams bend in the form, they take on such a nice sexy profile. Almost like a Kenny M glass bow, LMAO:) Padded the back and belly at glue up to protect the boo and Osage belly from clamp damage.

In your own words... I guess its ok ;-)
Keep up the good work Roy! After I tie into the stave Dan sent me I want to try a few of your kind of bows. Post lots of pictures ...
i opened this thread with specific intent.... Justin beat me to it.
sweet..the master at work
Roy,
When you flip your tips on a tri-lam do you do it with all of your stack together or do you bend each separate?
In the 3rd picture from the bottom you have your bamboo clamped to your table. What are you doing to it?
By the way throw some wood chips on the floor, you cant loose anything in that shop. LOL
Hi!
What glue are we speaking about? I've just started to make laminate bows and I thought two components epoxy needs a high temperature to cure properly(about 180 degrees).
Roy, I like the looks of that better. You can still go quite a bit farther with the bending in those tri-lams if you'd like.
Why did you prebend the ends of the limbs?
I flipped the Osage and the Cherry lam together, I kept them separated with a little block of wood while heating them, then clamped them down together. Jeff, I flip the tips prior to glue up to give the bow a slight recurve look at the tips. I'm fine with how far I bent it in the form. I used Unibond800 glue. I was just making sure everything lined up good in the one picture of it laying flat, all three lams were together there. There are a few chips and Osage dust on the floor:)
Ha! I know your game now! You just post the same pictures every few months and say you "started" a new bow!!!
j/k that should look ok I guess :)I've always liked the look of cherry in a bow.
ok you done yet old man...we all want to see :)
Ok dude, I was just wondering cuz you can put practically any amount of recurve into a tri lam without heat... except maybe a sharply angled static.
Looking good, I'll PM you my address ...
In all seriousness though I like the cherry core. Looks like a nice combination. Should shoot fast.
It won't come out of the clamps till tonight, I like to give them 24 hours. Ralph, I plan on using the other piece of wood you gave me for the riser, not the east Indian rose wood, the other one, but I can never remember the name:)
Pau Rosa
Thanks Roy
Took her out of the clamps tonight. Must say I am impressed with this glue up. I know I could get more d/r, mainly more reflex, but I like to stay on the mild side. Sorry about the picture quality, these are all from my cell phone.

Kenny, if I ever had the chance, I would play with glass bottles in your shop... Instead of cans.. LMAO..
:biglaugh: :deadhorse:
Roy, did you turn that pic a quarter turn?
Methinks you are layin on yer back wif the box on top of ya?
:bigsmyl:
Well I wuz looken up:)
hey I thought you said you was out of beer and that's why it wasn't done yet :) those are some real nice lines..gonna be sweet and remember stay away from fades and work the outer limbs and most important..don't let handle pop off like I did ..LOL
I guess it's ok.
Don't try to make it something it ain't. Don't remove or ignore the effects of the 'extra' reflex trying to make it take on the profile of a more straight-limbed bow. If you do an excellent job of pretapering, front profile shaping, and initial faceting of back, belly, and dip/handle, BEFORE you introduce her to the tree, she'll mostly show ya what profile she wants to be. You can persuade her some, but don't ignore her.
Looking good Roy. I have the fixins for a BBI just need to get started. Your bow may get me motivated.
pretty lines!
Not bad I hope you saved me a couple of those for Sat.
Heck yea Roy. Glad to see ya making a new one. I'm sure it will turn out Iffy at best. lol. Look forward to seeing the rest of it.
Worked on the riser and horn over lays tonight. The riser is Pau Rosa that Mr. Morris gifted me, awesome stuff.

(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7581.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7581.jpg.html)
This is a cow horn tip Trapper Rob gave me, really nice horn. I measured and then cut them down the center.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7579.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7579.jpg.html)
And got this.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7583.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7583.jpg.html)
Prepped the horn over lays and bow tips.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7586.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7586.jpg.html)
Then glued them on with Smooth On. I refuse to use cheap epoxy or super glue for tip over lays. Do it right the first time and don't look back.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7587.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7587.jpg.html)
Then I glued on the riser with Unibond800, not that cheap TBIII that Razorbak uses, LOL.

I see u had a couple cans of Coors!!!!
Wow Roy I was gonna say that looks great but now I won't
Lookin good Roy, I can't wait for winter to do another BBO. Diggin a foundation for a mud room that's been on my " honey do" list for a couple years right now. :readit: Bob
I guess it's OK so far :jumper:
It would have come out better if you had filled that box up instead of only doing it half way!!! Half a box half a bow lol Looks Good
Ok Roy. What's the hold up. Should be be done by now
Art, I told you all along you go too fast, and pop goes the handle:) I have other things on my plate, and when I get the bow done, I get the bow done:)
LOL
But I did get it floor tillered today, just gotta do the limb tips and string grooves and she is ready for the tree. I had to baby sit Trapper Rob today,,, again:)
Roy you wouldn't have as much fun if I didn't make the trip & you wouldn't have anybody to help drink your beer.
LOL Roy...LOL take your time ol man..definitely don't want that handle to pop
It looks real good so far Roy. I really like the horn. I like the different colors in them.
Trapper Rob shot his BBO yesterday for the first time. Shoots real nice, very quiet. I sent him home with a bottle of tung oil to finish it up.
Just got finished putting the stain on it here. I get nervous when Robbie puts on rubber gloves:)

Is that the one with the flipped tips from a few weeks ago? Wish I could get the tips on mine to have that profile cuz they look great that way. Nice work!
Yes it is, flipping the tips is easy. My first post has a picture of a tip clamped down on a little form, just add heat and clamp till cool.
Got the horn tip over lays sanded down today, what a pain that was:) I see the camera was not set to close up pictures, sigh:) So these pictures don't show their real beauty. I'll try again later.. Gotta cook Momma dinner, being retired isn't all it's cracked up to be. LMAO:)

Roy..that is a sweet tear drop shape..looking forward to see the rest
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7596.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7596.jpg.html)
I agree with Razorbak; that teardrop shape looks super. Gonna try flipping the tips with heat after I practice with the heat gun some more. First time I used one was a total disaster.
I guess it's ok looking lmao
I guess it's ok looking lmao
Them tips are OK I guess.
Looks good Roy!!
Not too bad,I guess
Lookin good bud, but lets get with it! You slackin cookin supper tryin to get points?
Those tips look cool Roy!
I do have a question though...
Is there a pretty good risk of the boo splintering up where it's tapered and there isn't any horn over it?
Or is it pretty safe to have it like that since the tips aren't supposed to flex anyway?
Thanks!
Thanks Razorback & Roy if I had a wife like you have I'd be cooking her super every night.
Or is it pretty safe to have it like that since the tips aren't supposed to flex anyway?
Yup.. But boo is a funny material, it will set ya back on your A$$ in a hurry, Or make ya smile.
Robbie, I cook her supper 5 nights a week, sometimes 6 or 7.. But I love to cook and grill out. When we go camping, I do all the cooken.
Cut the string grooves in tonight, floor tiller tells me there is more weight than I want, and that is a good thing at this point. String time tomorrow..
Here is your crooked stave, Robbie. After about 5 heat treatments.. Might do one or two more on it. It's close but not perfect yet..

(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/Chris.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/Chris.jpg.html)
sounds like you got a great women Roy...I enjoy cookin for mine as well from when she comes home from work..she trained me well :)
PS Roy..if its to heavy for your old bones..you can send it north and I will shoot it for you..LOL
I'll keep ya in mind, ah what's your name again?
You need more pictures of the dog catching frogs when you go fishing. The horn tips are great.
Looking good there Roy... :saywhat:
Got a string on her tonight, strung it right up to a 6 inch brace height. Gotta say it appears to be my best bow yet:) Has a 3/16th positive tiller right now, not bad but I'll let the bow decide what it wants for it's final tiller. Has a good bit of weight, 55 pounds would be my guess. I'm looking at 45 tops for my old butt. But being 10 pounds over weight is not a bad thing at this point, I still need to tiller it out.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7604.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7604.jpg.html)
I love the profile it has. I pumped a little more deflex into this one, plus tri lams just look so curvy:)
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/IMG_7602.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/ROY-CHRIS/media/IMG_7602.jpg.html)
Dang!
She just strung up like that..without tillering work?!
That's awesome!
Prolly dumb luck:) Or good planning:)
Roy..that looks amazing!!!!
Looking good ol' man... Love the lines of the unbraced picture. You got these things down to a science. How wide is she?
Looks good Roy. A little work on that left limb should get her evened up and get them limbs bending in sync.
Thanks guys, it's 1 1/4 wide at flares and out to 6 inches, then a straight taper to 1/2 at the tips.

my money is on the latter....
That is a sweet profile :clapper:
Lookin good Roy!!!!!
looks REAL NICE
You still workin on that same one? I thought you was retired, now and could work all day on them thangs?
No, really. That one looks like it has a power lam. I thought you didn't use power lams on yours.
Almost glass,, pardner!! :bigsmyl:
Looks great tho!!
No power lam, it's the core taper, it's 3/16th at the riser then tapers to 1/8th at tips. Glass my bass Sister McKenzie :) LOL

Yep, only one ingredient away.
It does look dang nice.
Almost glass :biglaugh:
It's looking good.
I got some streaky glass if you wanna practice cheap!! :D
I don't do glass:)
Had her to 18 inches on the tree tonight, have the limbs and tiller pretty much evened up. It's 30 pounds at 18 inches. By the time it gets to 28 inches, it will be well over 50 pounds. That's way too much weight for my old butt. I'm trying to decide what to do with it, so I quit for the night. It looks so good now with the cow horn tip over lays and the pau rosa riser, that I don't really want to mess with it and drop all that weight down to my 40 pounds. Might finish her out at whatever she comes out at and unload her on the big E-Bey auction sight. What would you guys do if it were your bow? I can always make another one just like her, but I'd thin my core lam a bit on the next try to get closer to the weight I want. I used ERC on my first tri lam and it came out light for me, never thought wild cherry would bump the weight up that much, DUH.. Live and learn I guess...

that is a sweet looking bow..heck I will purchase her from you if you don't go to **** :)
Just send her over to me Roy old son. i know it doesn't have glass but I guess I could grow to love it.Bit under powered is all. :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :goldtooth:
Roy I got all the ingredients for ya to do another!!! Trade ya? I always drool over ya R/D and ain't had one make it through glue up when I try.
What would I do with it?
I'd cut that handle piece off and glue another lam on to bring it up to a decent draw weight
How old were ya when we met? Early 50's? I'm just wondering how much time I've got left before I have to burn my osage and buy up a bunch of red cedar and balsa wood :)
I'm not gonna do anything rash though. I'm not sure your wussness is entirely age related. Haha! Zat git me back on yer thumpin list?
On a more serious note, I like that profile. How wide is it? You could always narrow it to reduce weight with minimal effect on tiller. You could also further radius the belly and maybe narrow the back a little more.... and/or make some full length scrapes on the belly. With a combination of those manuvers, it wouldn't take much to get it down to target weight.
I'm with Jeff...a combination of all that will drop some weight..and also remember she's gonna lose some weight too by drawing it further from set,AND shooting it in...right now your at ~55@28...it won't take too many more scrapes, narrowing, sanding, and rounding, plus shooting it in to lose 10 pounds...you need to start exercising it down inch by inch closer to your target weight if the tiller is looking good right now being so close to target weight..it might not show a flaw at only thirty pounds...it might take that 45 pounds to show the flaw and could be different from what it looks like right now with only 30 pounds of stress...
Roy, I say you take that bow to fat camp and drop a few pounds. I don't have any more pau rosa but if she don't turn out I will hook you up with something just as nice ...
Thanks guys, ya talked me into making Roy a bow. It's just so sweet that I wanna keep her, plus Ralph gifted me the pau rosa for the riser and Trapper Rob gave me the cow horn, those sort of things stick with me. It's 1 1/4 at flares to 1/2 at tips, Jeff.
Think the first thing I will do is take 1/16th" off the sides of the limbs and then redo the facets. Then tiller her on out from there. I was just bummed out last night after getting her on the tree and seeing how much weight she had, and the Coors Light had the voices in my head arguing back and forth, LMAO. Sorta fuggered ya all would help me see the light:)
You better keep that one, Roy. At your age........ you just may have a hard enough time pullin that tiller rope on the next one. :biglaugh: :shaka:
Roy if it's to heavy for you I can shoot it in for you next time I come up.
Robbie, your 22 inch quick draw and shoot won't do anything for it:)
Heck yah. Make another. Want to see another build along You make them sweet that's for sure
Yeah make another and send me that poor undernourished lil bow, n make another woosie one for yourself. :bigsmyl: :archer:
Took 1/16th off the sides of the limbs tonight, then did the facets again. Had it to 21 inches on the tree where it's at 33 pounds, that would put her at least at 47 pounds at 28 inches. So I'm gaining ground. 7 more inches to go and I want to drop another 5 pounds! Jeff, the pull rope is about 1/4 inch to the left of the line, and I'm at a 1/16th + tiller. I'll prolly keep working the left limb a tad, but I'm ok with how it's pulling now. Been taking my time with this baby.. I like it:)

Show off!!!!
Perfectly sync those limbs Roy and you'll like the bow even more.
Why wouldn't you? What are your concerns?
guess its ok!
Glad ya went for it! I have had to take a few bows to fat camp and in narrowing the limbs in my r/d bow and flat bow it made the bow design a little better.
Best of skill and can't wait to see ya at full draw flinging arrows!
That one is looking very nice. Bet you will be hunting with that one this fall.
Lookin good roy boy!!
Boy? I'll show ya a boy, Son:)
A Boy in his jammies, and dah Buck is standing behint ya.. LMAO

We went fishing in our pond tonight, my Honey caught a cat fish. Not one of the big boys though, this is a female and only about 24 to 26 inches long. We got cats 30 inches long in there, but they are very hard to land on 20 pound test line. This one was a good 15 - 20 pounds anyway. Video is from my cell phone and it was getting dark on us. But it's all good in the hood. Gonna go play wif my tri lam now and get some more weight off her.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uNBCiWcMgw&feature=youtu.be
Nice fish!
Spent 2 hours reducing more weight and tillering. It's now 35# at 23". -3/32nd tiller and pull rope is even closer to the line. It looks real sweet to me. 4 more inches to go and should land around 43 pounds. Not really concerned about the pull rope tracking right down the line, it's so close now and from past bows, I know this baby is gonna be smooth, quiet, and accurate:)

very nice..it is awesome to watch the master at work..I know a lot of us guys wish we had half your talent..looking forward in seeing the final product
Umm, Roy
You do know that some of those cutoffs from your bows will make a nice tripod for your camera? :) But all that matters is, it sounds like you are enjoying retirement. That is a sweet tri lam.
Joe

That's the LITTLE buck Roy, ya gotta be aware of your surroundings!!
Sweet bow
She is done being tillered, 45 pounds at 28". Finished up the riser after these pictures and sanded the bow down with 220 grit, then 320 grit paper. Still a few more hours work until it's shot in and finished. But I like it a lot:)
Un-braced profile is very even with the black line on the wall.

Looks great, Roy. But I'd let it be for awhile and put that catfish in the smoker. Nothing better than smoked catfish.
Nice one Roy!
I'll have to try a tri-lam some day... Heck if you can do it... ;)
Well Roy, I have to admit, you do make a fine looking bow.
Now let's see some video of you shooting her in.
A negative 1/8" tiller... to sync the limbs? Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about
I'm anxious to hear how you feel it behaves.
That's a nice looking bow, Roy, and I think one of your best to date.
Mighty fine bow. Keep'em coming.
Oh I neglected to post the picture of the cans of glue it took to get it to this point. Took a lot of glue:) LMAO

Thanks for the nice comments, guys! Today is mow the grass day as it's been neglected for a while do to bow building and fishing...

Another nice one! :notworthy:
a great job! I'm interested in your tillering tree/bow position/pulling point method...have you posted this already?
thanks!
Bob- (I'm mowing grass today too... LOL)
I'm mowed today too. Mowed the field over at mom's then took a walk in her woods looking for bow wood... didn't find anything that moved me to fire up the chainsaw.
Well Bowjunkie could explain it better than I, but the bow is resting on a one inch plate at the center of the 4 inch handle, the pull rope is positioned to the right to replicate where the middle finger of my drawing hand will be when shooting the bow. It's setup assuming a 3/8th nocking point above the arrow shelf. The line to the right is used for tillering for split finger and the line to the left is used for three under tillering. To achieve equal limb timing, the pull rope should travel straight down the line on the wall according to split or three under tillering. If the rope drifts to the left, that means the left limb is stronger, if the rope drifts to the right, that means the right limb is stronger. Just how some folks do it, others pull from the center of the handle, but it makes more sense to me to pull the bow on the tree from where your fingers will be when shooting the bow.
I shot it about 50 times today, quiet, smooth, no hand shock, and shoots pretty darn good. It has a FF string on it.
And I'm bummed out, something happened to the tractor today, wasn't running right, had a lack of power and loud whining noise coming from the engine. Gotta haul it to the dealer tomorrow, something tells me this ain't gonna be a cheap fix...
Glad ya tamed that bow Roy! How does it shoot compared to your other bows being a little thinner profile?
I don't have much to add, Roy. You explained the basics pretty well.
The only way your explanation wouldn't work for someone would be if they didn't let the weight of the bow pull evenly into the bow hand... like if they shot with the pressure mostly on the heal of the hand, or shot with a straight wrist and high grip... then they would have to set up their tree to replicate their grip... that's all.
Basically it's this simple... Replicate grip on bow and string, draw a line to mimic string hand fulcrum travel perpendicular to handle, and adjust relative limb strength so the hook follows the line as the bow is drawn.
When it follows the line to full draw, the limbs are syn'd and the nock point can be set where you predetermined it, 3/8" in Roy's case, and mine... and the bow will shoot an arrow straight away, without handshock, vibration, will balance in the bow hand at full draw, shoot efficiently, quietly.... all the good stuff :) from the very first arrow shot.
Sometimes it's easy to pick up on bows that aren't timed well. They often reveal themselves in full draw pictures as they lean forward or back in the bow hand. And when shot, they try to jump the opposite way due to the inertia of the stronger limb returning first.
Watch em. Bows are the best teachers.
thanks!
Bob
Actually Ralph, I over built this bow width wise because my first tri lam came in too light in weight. The first tri lam had ERC core wood, this bow I used Wild Cherry. So now that I have narrowed this bow twice to reduce weight, it's right at where I always make my BBO bows, 1 1/4 at flares to 1/2 at tips. I am new to the tri lam game, this is only my second one, but will not be my last. I just love how they glue up and look when done. I just need to get familiar with different core woods and thickness tapers for different draw weights. OMG, I'm starting to talk like one of them glass bow guys and their stacks.. LYAO McKenzie..

Yup.
for what it's worth Roy....Kubota tractors tend to mimic their owners
:bigsmyl:
Roy, I have fiberglass here when you're ready. Just say the word ;)
Won't be long now....
Gooberboy, that Kubota is 18 years old. Other than one battery, it has never failed me. Bowjunkie, no thanks. I have gas here too LMAO
Nice Roy...glad your handle didn't pop off :)
I hate tedious stuff, and taking the rind off drives me up the wall. But ya gotta be very careful when doing it, or else. Pop goes the Boo.. Don't try to make it perfect and get all the rind off, there are little lateral depressions along the boo that ya just gotta let them alone. If you try to get them out, you cut into the power fibers on either side of them, that is bad news on down the road.

Tung Oil before wiping it off. I don't know why it looks so crooked there, but it does.

Artty Boy, if ya would only learn to pay attention to details and GO SLOW. Your handles wouldn't pop off either, son:) This is the build along you wanted, pay attention.. LOL
I tired and going to bed. This retirement hain't all it's cracked up to be. Sure glad I don't have to go to work tomorrow morning:)

I have wanted to tackle making one of these Bamboo backed bows for the longest time. I love the lines and the look and I can imagine shooting one is a pleasure. Thanks Roy for taking the time to show the pics. Your pics intensified my desire to build one for myself.
That is one sexy stick... and it ain't you roy boy lol!!!
She sure is looking sweet, so far. How long is your riser on that bow, Mr. Roy?
Roy. I'm definitely paying attention and I will go slow on the next one
Riser is 12 inches, Kenny
Looks sweet can't wait to see it next time I'm there.
For a second there I thought that was brown glass on the back of it
Very nice Roy!

Thanks Ole Boy:)
Have the 4th coat of tung oil on her, one more coat and it's done being sealed. Then the rest and grip and she is all done. Made a FF string for her tonight too. I like her a lot:)

very pretty.
like the accents in the horn.
man she looks thin...I like it!
I can hardly wait for bbo#2...I did too much wrong..lol
Fast flight eh?
With that one node so close to the tip....
Did you sorta forget about it and just match up the distance from the 2nd node on that tip to the first on the other?
I imagine being so close it was in a non bending section.
Thanks!
Roy..thats a amazing looking bow!!!!! FF material..what happen you have a brain fart and forgot you like that rope B50 :) nah FF seems to handle a lot of bows better I feel
Hell Roy thats a beauty! You use water or alcohol based stain there?
Anyway I gotta start a new attempt on making my own BB- propably a BBB^^
Fast flight? Don't they use that stuff on compounds? Does that mean you're putting compound parts on your bows now?
Used alcohol based aniline dye. Ya I know FF, going to make a B-50 string for it too and compare them. I've never used FF on a bow before except I make the tillering strings out of it so they don't stretch out on me. I space a node equally at the flares or one in the center of the handle, whichever works out best. Just depends on the piece of boo.
I'm gonna try some D97 soon. I got it, just haven't twisted one up yet.
Only trouble with the newer string material is it's so thin, guess I'll have to double serve it or do something to thicken it up at the arrow nock, not sure how I'm gonna do it yet. Hate to double serve it.
Plastic nocks can be bend narrower- or ya talkin bout selfnocks?
Both, Moe. I shoot three under so I need a snug fitting nock. Will prolly just do one serving and then wrap something on the serving right at the nock point. I tie on my nock points, one above and one below the nock. So I have wrapped the area between them before when using B-50. FF will just need more padding.
She turned out real sweet, Roy. Glad you got here down to your weight.
Roy
I don't know what size serving your using but the easiest way to have a snug nock is instead of double serving Wrap plain ol masking tape around the string a few times then serve Very durable and cheap and will last the life if string. I use a 12 or 14 strands if 8190 and wrap 3 full rotations using a 4" piece around the nock area. Wrap the full length of tape you cut out and not width of tape I serve with 0.24 to 0.30 serving and I get snug nocks and they work great No need to waste all the extra serving if you do it this way. But one thing is when you wrap the tape cut in angle so when you wrap it has a taper and the serving material goes smoothly up the slight taper.
Roy, I only have one fast flight string, had the same problem. I added a few, I think 6 short strands of B50 then served over it. Been shooting it almost every day now for several months with no problems. I just did a section about 4 to 5 inches long where the nock hits and enough room for my fingers.
15 strands of D97 with .025 serving holds onto Bohning Classic nocks just fine for me.
Bowjunkie, D97 changes the feel of shooting a wooden bow in a very noticeable and desirable way. probably shoots a faster arrow, too, but you'll need a chronograph to prove it. I don't understand why anyone would keep using B-50 on their wooden bows if they can get Dynaflight. is no comparison, imo. and it is absolutely a myth that dynema fiber strings will do harm to wooden bows.
Jamie, that's exactly what I've heard, and why I bought some to try. I've never had 'a problem' with how my bows shoot with B-50, with creep, stretch, duability, speed, or the feel at the shot... BUT if in the end I prefer D97, if only because of how it feels at the shot, that's reason enough for me to switch string material.
I admit, I've been hesitant to try a low stretch material because I've heard many folks declare it would be detrimental to a wooden bow, and I'm not about to spend the time and effort on my bows that I do, only to have them ruined by the string. But lately I've heard more and more insist no damage will be done, so I'm willing to give it a shot.
I've launched countless thousands of arrows from wooden bows of various sorts (selfbows, bbo's, sinew backed bows, etc.)braced with D97 strings in the last 15 years. not a single instance of ill effect or even any long term effects on bows that I've been shooting for 10 years with the same Dynaflight string. added bonus of these low-stretch string materials is that you cannot wear them out, at least I never have and I have some over 10 years old that have seen countless trips to the woods and thousands of shots. I have worn out b-50 strings from dragging them through the briars and such for a few years.
and how the shot "feels" is the big difference, and was the deal maker for me. less vibration, less bump in the hand, both of which are inherent in the low mass, light handled wooden bows we are all talking about. I proved it to myself by going out and shooting a bow with two different strings. shoot a few with B-50, switch strings, shoot a few with D97. back and forth for several rounds and I was sold very quickly. every bow I make gets braced with a D97 string.
Thanks for the input, Jamie. I appreciate it and I respect your opinion. Hopefully I'll get one twisted up this weekend.
OMG...
Bowjunkie is going high tech???? I love it Bro.
Roy that sure is a good looking bow. I really like the color of the boo. The horn tips are awesome too. Well done my friend. I got some different strings from Good ol Mr. Art and Roy you will for sure notice a big difference. A good difference.
Very nice Roy!
Well she is all done, I like her a lot:)
