I've had the riser block glued up for some time and finally got busy on it. It still needs to be shaped but I did get the site window cut in and roughed it out. The limbs are spalted maple- the riser is rose wood with a zebra wood "I" beam- I'm shoot for 55-57#@ 28". Here's a few pictures

I like it! Those limbs are sweet!
Wow! Nice bow
Nice bow once again from your self. :notworthy:
Can't wait to see it all finished up, those woods should really pop then, although they look real good now, without finish.
Nice! If you need an address to finish it off I can send you one :)
Another work of art for sure.
Dave, great looking bow. I love the riser shape and the limbs are to die for. As always great job.
Really nice work, I like your style.
Thanks guys- the riser should really polish up and look nice once it's finished- I did use some of the rose wood as knife scales this spring and liked the way it finished.Right now I'm hiding inside because it is 103 degrees out in the garage right now :scared:

Sweet knife! I just started knife making.... You could offer those as a pair :)
Any build-alongs for the mosaic?? The more I see, the more I like. Great bow :notworthy:
Very nice!! Great job Dave!!
Sweet all away around!

Not really a build along but this is how I do them... First I'll glue up some different width stock
(http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll259/truxturning/2013%20trade%20bow/image_zpsc7643780.jpg)
Then I rip the blank close to the finished thickness and then cross cut them to the width of the riser
(http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll259/truxturning/2013%20trade%20bow/Tradgang2013020_zpsce304e1a.jpg)
I glue the pieces on to a piece of glass-
(http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll259/truxturning/2013%20trade%20bow/Tradgang2013025_zps8504cfaf.jpg)
I sand the squeeze out glue off and then glue the other piece of glass on when I glue it into the riser. I know there are different ways but this one works for me.
awesome ! thanks, that looks easy enough. I'll give it a try sometime
That's a beautiful bow. The mosaic stripes and the limb veneers are sweet!
Would love to see a braced and I braced profile.

Looks great Trux!

I like the limb design. I bet it is very stable. Thanks.
Beautiful as always!

Dan it is a pretty stable design. I made a little progress on shaping the riser- I still need to do a little more and then finish sand but here's where I'm at-

I like your wood combos.Gonna be purty with finish on it.
I like that profile to. What are the limb pad angles?

Thanks- I can wait to see it with finish also... The limb pads are at 18 degrees, the riser is 19" long
Thats going to be one sweet looking bow.
I agree, love the mosaic accents.
Dave
Very nice Trux!
Great looking bow Dave!!
Very nice!
Sweet bow
Good grief another of those sloppy
looking jobs we see here all the time. ;) ;) Bue--.
Hahaha- you got that right Buemaker... I got it all finish sanded and ready for spraying, that will have to wait until next weekend but it did finish 60#@28".. Final spraying or not I'll run some arrows through it this week.
Anybody got a good source for antler ends? I want to make a couple for this bow and don't have any good antlers on hand to make into antler bolts.

One of my favorites from you Trux!
Nice job!
NICE!
Dave, try:

They should have some shed antler bases.

Super sweet bow! My friend found these whitetail sheds last year just before hunting season, he only hunted him 3 or 4 times.. he is allowing me access this year. These would be a little wide for your project.. Wow Robert! Good luck finding that deer. Dan thanks for the info- I'll check them out.
Got it sprayed yesterday- here's a few pics of it done. I'll let the finish cure for a few days and then get some full draw pics...

Beautiful work. What did you spray it with? :clapper:
Thanks Mike- I use Krystal dull- it's the only finish I've had good luck with.
Gorgeous bow Awesome build along
That's a great looking rig! How did the sanding ball trick work out?

It worked out great! Wish I had used one earlier.
Fantastic work David!!
What`s that sandingball"trick"- you discovered a simple DIY solution?
MoeM- it's a sand ball you mount to a drill press- I got it at harbor freight. I used to to finish blend my overlays and riser- worked great.
Here's one in action from Dan's St Jude build along

Well I've been noticing a difference in bow weight with the same stack height when I use boo as a core vs lets say maple...usually to the tune of around 10#s or more. With this bow I used spalted maple and it came out right at that 10# heavier mark... So I though I'd try out an experiment and build another set of limbs for this riser using bamboo as the core- same stack height and see if they come out lighter than the maple limbs. I had these cool elm veneers I'm going to dress them up with. One limb cooked- one to go- here's what they look like under glass.
Beautiful work David!!! Always blow away but your creations!!!
very nice work love the look Thanks Shane
So you think the maple is heavier? this should be very interesting. Beautiful veneers you've been able to get!
Thats what I'm thinking- the last bow like this I used bamboo as a core - same stack height and they were about 10#s lighter then this one. I'm glueing up the second limb tonight so I should have my answer pretty soon...
That's a great looking bow Trux!!! Tony
Wow! Beautiful as always.
Mighty Nice Dave!!!
I notice the same thing Dave about the maple makin the bow weight heavier. Red elm, aboo seem to give lighter weights on my curve design as well.
Trux this is my favorite bow that I have seen you make...Fantastic work.
Thanks guys- I got to spend the weekend backpacking and stump shooting, it really spits an arrow. I've got the second set of limbs all glued up, now to get them shaped, mounted and to check weight....
WOW!!Thats awsome work Trux!!!
Well my not so scientific results have these new limbs coming in 6#s lighter then the last ones. They still need nock overlays and some finish sanding where I'll probably lose another pound or two... Kind of glad they came in lighter though- I didn't need two sets of limbs with the same draw weight for this riser...

Wow man! Your bows are beautiful!!
Very sweet...
Great wood combo and I really like your riser.

So, in theory, you could use thinner maple lams to get the same weight. Any maple-to-bamboo conversion ratio ideas?
So, in theory, you could use thinner maple lams to get the same weight. Any maple-to-bamboo conversion ratio ideas? [/QB]
Yes, thinner maple lams to get the same weight-A wag would be .010 in core thickness as a starting point.
I got the limbs shaped and mounted- just need to spray them. With any luck I'll get that done this afternoon.
They finished 53#@28" which is 7#s lighter than the maple limbs with the same stack using a bamboo core. Both sets shoot great so now I'll have to decide which ones to use next weekend...

Here it is with both sets of limbs- 53#s and 60#s. got the new limbs sprayed so they will be ready to go next weekend...

Wow David, great job!!!
Gorgeous looking riser and limbs David!
Nice set up.
Good poundage spread also.
Beautiful work as always, big fan!
Beautiful!
stunning as usual David
Hard maple edge grain is hard to beat as core wood. You just need to adjust your stacks. And the fact that it takes less to get the weight you most likely are not going to change the performance and it may be even better than A-boo.
In my way of thinking it doesn't come any better than good old maple. Great job as usual Dave.
Beautiful Work
