Title: Bent limbs.
Post by: wood carver 2 on June 16, 2013, 06:04:00 PM
I have an issue with an all bamboo tri-lam I recently finished. The limbs are bent slightly to the right as seen from the belly side. The string tracks ok and the bow shoots well enough, but it just bugs me a little to see the tips out of line.
The bow is glued up using urac and I was wondering if there was a way to straighten them out.

I don't believe there is much to be done. Too much risk.
Some time it is just an optical illusion.
If you lay the bow on it's side does it show up,as you flip it.

I'm not positive about Urac, but you can straighten a bow glued up with Smooth On with a heat gun. I just did it again a few days ago to a very seriously reflexed bow. I heated one limb twice, the other limb once, now it's perfect. This was a bamboo/osage/osage tri-lam.

The key is to get it just hot enough, but don't overdo it.

I held the bow sideways in my vice, hung a gallon jug of water from the tip, then stood a locking tape measure up on the floor with the end of it just touching the limb tip.... I put heat to the limb until it moved the amount I figured I needed, then let it cool.

It's definitely bent - it shows when I look down the length of the bow. I'll think about using heat, but maybe, I'll shoot it some more and see if I can just live with it and not risk doing any damage.
As I look at it, I wonder if the tips somehow came out of line during glue up.

Be nice Roy, don't make me start a list of my own.    :deadhorse:
I tried bending it across my knee and it looks like it helped some. I'll post pictures when I find some time.
