Title: Coco recurve
Post by: talkingcabbage on June 06, 2013, 09:46:00 AM
Hey all.  Here's a bow I've been meaning to show off for a while, but the internet has been so slow here, and we all know how photobucket is anyway ... So I finally got pictures uploaded today.

She's a 60" 55# @ 28" recurve.  Cocobolo riser block and lams from Kenny (thanks a bunch!!)  Riser has a couple osage and grey actionwood accent stripes.  The guy I made it for wanted a Celtic cross in it somewhere, so after a couple weeks kicking around ideas, I finally remembered a local guy with a CNC machine and tracked him down.  After talking with him I got a lot of other ideas too, so I might have to get crazy on a bow or two before long!
Tips are buffalo horn, and string is an endless loop fast flight.

Enjoy the pics

I love that old school recurve shape!  Nice work all around. I cant see what you did with the cross. Do you have a close up?  Was it a metal inlay?

Beachbowhunter, the cross is just grey actionwood inlaid into the coco.  I had the guy rout a 3/8" deep negative and a 7/16" positive of the cross, then I just had to clean it out a bit and glue it in.  That thickness allowed me to carve into it while shaping the riser without cutting through it.

And thanks guys!  It's nice to get an "attaboy" from some more experienced guys.

Lovely bow! Love the riser and tips. What are the limb core and veneers? Does buffalo horn work as well as micarta for tip overlays?

Native, the limbs are cocobolo lams front and back and actionboo cores. This is the first time using horn for me, but I believe its way stronger than micarta, and doesn't have the fiber lines you get sometimes with the micarta. Certainly smells bad enough cutting it, though.  :)

Excellent work! I like the I-beam in the riser and the inlay cross is way cool. I'll be doing buff horn tips on the next couple I'm building too. It's nice to get a feel for how they will turn out. Really nice job!

That's some great looking wood on that bow. I like the riser lamination.
