As Promised to the winers Horneshooter & Whitehat I am posting a buildalong on the progress of their bows.
here is what we started with:

35"x5"x1.75" leopard spoted African ebony board.
this is what I di with it tonight:

now we have four 17.5"x2.5"x1.75" riser blocks.I cant believe how cool these bows are going to look. This is the wildest lumber I have ever seen. Anyway now I need your help. Would you flare these roisers with some other wood? If so What wood? Use some accent stripes? The next place these are headed is to the bandsaw and then glueup. Im sorta thinking about doing a same wood flare with some phenolic stripes and maple veneers on the outside of the phenolic as I dont want to add another wood that would detract from the beauty of these risers. The high bidders have given me some creative license. What do yall think? Sorry about the phone pics.
Are you thinking 1/8"black phenolic with 050 curly maple on each side of it? What ever you choose I am sure it will look awesome. I seem to use black and red glass in a lot of my bows. I will be following this build a long...
Double post....
I was thinking .030 maple and 1/16" black phenolic. I can get them around the bends in a flared riser a little better but it seems we are thinking along the same lines.
Bonner
Outlined flares would look cool!! That is some awesome wood.
Pig hunting tonight so no update till tomorrow.
No more pig hunting till bows are done!!! LOL
signed...HorneShooter and Whitehat
Got the flares cut today and the risers are glued-up, clamped and curing.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_090520.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_090520.jpg.html)
first marked the flares and checked with riser template for proper location.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_091011.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_091011.jpg.html)
made the cuts on the bandsaw.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_091021.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_091021.jpg.html)
this will give you an idea how much figure these risers will show once I start shaping them.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_092228.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_092228.jpg.html)
cut the phenolic after grinding all the "shiney" off.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_092938.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_092938.jpg.html)
Used phenolic as a template for cutting out the maple veneer outlines

here it is all stuck together before glue-up
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_094955.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_094955.jpg.html)
heres what it should look like when its done.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_102351.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_102351.jpg.html)
I drill 2 holes with a 17/64" bit on either end of the riser wide of where the riser will end. Ithen use a 1/4" dowel in the hloes to keep the parts aligned during glue-up.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_102543.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_102543.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_102720.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_102720.jpg.html)
ready for glue-up
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_103726.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_103726.jpg.html)
time to glue all 13 layers together.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_105051.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_105051.jpg.html)
it helps to sharpen the dowels a little so they can find their way through all the layers after glue-up.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_105243.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_105243.jpg.html)
all glued-up and ready for clamps. (http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130608_110423.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130608_110423.jpg.html)

clamped and curing
That wood is freaking sweet. Looks great so far. Look foward to seeing the rest of it.
Me too !
Wow that riser is going to be bad a$$...
Man thats looking great!
I'm ready to get mine in my hands!
Very nice indeed!
Made a little more progress yesterday morning.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_095804.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_095804.jpg.html)
Cut pad angles with Rockler jig on table saw. these are about 7 degrees.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_101434.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_101434.jpg.html)
they matched up well with template.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_103602.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_103602.jpg.html)
glurd on phenolic limbpads with gel CA. Notice how they are not centered? At this point risers are 1.75" wide and I use 1.5" limb stock. I cheat over towards the shelf side alowing myself to cut them 3/16" past center without losing too much width in the narrowest part of the riser adjacent to the shelf.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_103744.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_103744.jpg.html)
I use the cut offs from the pad angles to level the pads for easy clamping.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_105225.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_105225.jpg.html)
next I marked the limb pads for the bolt and pin holes.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_110546.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_110546.jpg.html)
leveled risers in drill press. Notice my custom drill collar?
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_111240.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_111240.jpg.html)
drilled holes.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_111416.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_111416.jpg.html)
and tapped.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_114231.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_114231.jpg.html)
cut the shelf.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_115105.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_115105.jpg.html)
Used this bit in the press to acheive the perfect cut past center and to radius my shelf. I then used a 4" angle grinder with a paint removal disk to blend in the "stair steps"
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_112426.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_112426.jpg.html)
I like to use a 1.5" hole saw in the press to cut the throat and the little radius under the grip.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_111949.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_111949.jpg.html)
no build is complete until there is a little blood and a whole lot of splinters.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_122722.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_122722.jpg.html)
got a little carried away working and forgot to take pics of a couple steps. So I cut out the riser profile on the bandsaw, and then rough ground to shape with the spindle sander and a 36 grit 1.5" sleeve.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_122728.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_122728.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_122733.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_122733.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130609_123510.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130609_123510.jpg.html)
a little better light so you can see the figure its starting to show. this is gonna be a cool bow!
Please dont make fun of my shop. Some dudes are fastidious and everything has to be in its place. Some dudes are not...
the grain in that riser is gonna pop when you spray it!
Awesome build along Dan!
No matter how many bows I build and BAs I read- It`s always fantastic to follow the rise of a beauty out of raw lumber and a little glue in the hands of an artist...
Looking Great Dan! I'm thinking that I'll have to print this pictures so that I'll have a "baby book" for my new bow.
Just had a few minutes to work on the bows after work. Rounded off belly side of limb pads and smoothed the riser to 120 grit.Beginning to look like a bow handle.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130612_174122.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130612_174122.jpg.html)
The figure in this wood is unbelievable!

Thats all for today. Wont be long till ill be gluing up limbs.
Great build along!
That wood is insanely cool..
Just WOW Dan !!
That leopard ebony is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing the build along.
Wow that is some wild looking wood.
That's really turning into a beauty! How has the wood been to work with? I've tinkered with a few different African species, and had very different experiences...
Thanks for the build-along! Masters like you remind me of how far I have to come in the art...
Thanks all. Looks like the limb veneers for these bows won't be here till middle of next week. I'll use tomorrow to catch the other riser up to where this one is. Today I'm at a swim meet with my kids and the little one twisted my arm into taking her fishing in the Gulf after the meet. Any thing for the kids right?
Michael, thanks for the compliment but I am far from a master. To answer your question, the wood is extremely easy to work with. Very tight grained, hard and heavy but doesn't burn when you power sand with fine grits. Takes a polish easily too. I have found that most African hardwood is pretty easy to work with the exception of Limba and Sapele. Zebra can also be a pain as it has such coarse grain and I don't like its strength.
Bonner
so what are you gonna use for veneer? even plain ole black glass would rock with that riser!! fishing in the gulf would be nice, red snapper season is in now..but sea trout and red fish would be a fun day too..good luck and thanks again for posting the build-a-long.
Looking good Dan
Just sent photos/measurements of a handle configuration (that I like) to Dan. She ought to shoot sweet right out of the box!!
Great looking riser from wood to overall design.
Robert, got some cool B&W royal ebony veneer in the mail today. Excellent figure and a great match for the colors in the risers. I can't wait to get the limbs built. I'll post veneer pics tomorrow.
Bonner
Can't wait to see limbs with that riser... the combinations sounds amazing. Looking great!
Made a little more progress on Father's Day. Second verse same as the first...remember there are two of these bows?

Second riser is glued up and cured. waithing o me to cut it out and shape it. Also got a little package in the mail...
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130617_151903.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130617_151903.jpg.html)
pretty cool huh? I will get these limbs built sometime this week.
Bonner
Heart rate up....breathing quickening....
That is some absolutely incredible wood. The owners of these bows are very fortunate.
What is that wood? I could use something like that for some projects I have...
its Leopard spotted Gaboon ebony halfseminole.
Ok I learned a ton about building bows from reading build-alongs and asking questions. So I decided to add a little more detail in the hopes that it may benefit someone who is a newer bowyer. I skipped a few steps in the cutting and shaping of the first riser. I am going to show you all those steps on the second riser. Todays post spanned about 2 hours of shop time.
So I took the cured riser block out of the vice and removed the clamps. Then I used the belt sander to carefully flatten the glue lines on one
side. It is important for the riser to be square so the angle jig will cut acurate limb pad angles. I use my TS to square the riser(bc I dont have a drum sander) by putting the flattened side against the fence and trimming the oposite edge and then flipping it and repeating. I start out with 1&3/4"riser stock. After this step it will be 1&5/8"
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_130119.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_130119.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_130340.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_130340.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_130703.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_130703.jpg.html)
All squared up and ready forlimb pads to be cut.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_131231.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_131231.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_131340.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_131340.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_131612.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_131612.jpg.html)
Now we need to drill the holes for the limb atachment. I use a micrometer to measure and then mark the bolt and pin holes. Next I use a tiny drill to make pilot holes in exactly the right spot.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_140819.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_140819.jpg.html)
the bigger bits follow thepilots and I end up with good bolt position.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_141500.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_141500.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_141659.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_141659.jpg.html)
pins are also on the money!
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_141659.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_141659.jpg.html)
next I mark and cut the sight window on the BS. I cut it so the shelf is square.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_143227.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_143227.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_143358.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_143358.jpg.html)
Now I need to radius the shelf.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_143652.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_143652.jpg.html)
I make several passes with this bit to get it shaped to the line.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_143936.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_143936.jpg.html)
Now I need to get the cut passed center to a perfect 3/16". It takes several passes with each one a little deeper. I adjust depth by gently adjusting the table height on the DP.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_144023.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_144023.jpg.html)
after first pass..
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_144214.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_144214.jpg.html)
after multiple passes its perfect.
I use the bandfile to smoothe out the shelf.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_144509.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_144509.jpg.html)
Gotta deal with the steps left by the burr.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_144513.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_144513.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_144549.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_144549.jpg.html)
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_144650.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_144650.jpg.html)
Gotta love the speed and ease of the angle grinder with a paint removal sponge.
drilling out throat with 1.5" hole saw.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130619_145841.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130619_145841.jpg.html)
no the radius under the handle.

Next step is making wedges. I do that in the next couple days.
Beautiful work, Dan! These are going to be two fantastic bows!
Thanks you Dan for sharing these steps in shaping a handle... I find that handles are very difficult to do so seeing the steps really help!!! Well done!
Thanks for the pics! Those risers are sweet- the lams are going to really look great
A little more Progress. Got both sets of wedges built. I learned a quick and easy method several years back for building perfect wedges every time from Steve Quinton of Ibex bows. It uses my trusty 6x48" Harbor Freight beltsander and a simple jig.Heres how it works...
First i cut my stock to the length and width I want for my wedges. I this case its .3" x 9"

Heres where it gets interesting. I rip a 36 grit down to about 4" and put it on the sander. And use this simple jig that took about 15 minutes to make.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130626_180953.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130626_180953.jpg.html)
The jig is just a chunk of MDF with a wedge with the dementions I want that is split in half and glued on either side of the MDF. I clamp my wedge stock to it and use the exposed roller as a guide to make the wedges. The belt runs in between the guides. All of this took maybe 20 minutes.

Great build! Looking forward to seeing how you do the limb bolts.
It looks like Whitehat and I will be meeting up with Dan in July in New Braunfels, Texas to pick up our St. Jude's bows and wood arrows. Should be great!
OK Paul's bow is only needs finish and its done. Lots of work and pics to post so I wont elaborate much. If you have questions just ask.

Important point here. I uses 7 mil painters plastic (home depot) and Fibertape (walmart) to keep my lams from slipping and getting glue everywhere. works great.

I use a 21/64 bit to drill all limb holes. gives plenty of room for 5/16 bolts. I also use it to drill the pin holes even though they are only 1/4. gives me some wiggle room in lining up limbs. Ill show you how I lock the pins in place later.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130701_022826.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130701_022826.jpg.html)
Here is a little expedient trick for perfect pin hole position. bolt the limb on on top of the pins and tighten once it is straight. Leaves dimples for drill guides.

Next to Dan I was the first to hold your riser Paul. It is one fine piece of wood. I helped Dan clean that shop during the heatwave. Man was it hot.
This bow is going to be a killer!
Paul wanted 58# at 30" but he said this is ok.

Once I get the limbs alligned and tillered I flatten the sides of the limb pads so if the limb sides are flush I know its straight. Helps because I have some play in the limbs due to larger pin holes.

absolutely amazing!!!!!!!
Fantasic bow, fantastic BA and I like the way you do the pin alignment precisely with low effort...
Very Nice!! A lot of nice tricks to try out.
All I can say is WOW!!! :notworthy:
Dan, you might want to go ahead and sight that thing in for Paul,we have a little competition coming up in August and he'll need some help. Awesome work, wish I had talent like that.
David
That bow is gorgeous. The recipient should count himself lucky indeed.
I've really enjoyed watching how takedown bows are made-it's intrigued me for a long time. I love TDs, but I couldn't figure out how to make them work from the building side. This has been a real eye-opener.
Thanks all. Building a deer camp cabin this week and then Ill finish these bows up. Dave I will be sure and zero it in soon for Paul. I'm gonna try to make the trip up in August too. And I think you are being a little generous with the talent remark but thanks just the same.

man those are sweet bows
Looks great Dan !!
Can't wait for you guys to come to the ranch, I've seen quite a few Axis and we can hunt them anytime....sure need rain though. Dan, the bow looks amazing, can't wait to shoot it!
Excellent work Dan!!
When can I come to the ranch Paul?
When can I come to the ranch Paul?
When can I come.........
Wade my good buddy...you are welcome anytime! I have hunted many a day on your place!
Finish sanded Pauls bow.I use the marker to fill in all the low spots. then I use 240 grit emory cloth and a gloved hand to press it against the low spots and drag it across them until they are level and the ink is gone.

Not too bad. Less that 1.5#.
now to lock the limbs in place. the holes are oversized so I have room to adjust limb tracking. once it is perfect heres how I lock them in place.

I wish I never looked at this. I'm not worthy! This is absolutely mind blowing craftsmanship. I feel incredibly under talented and equally impressed. Even if I had all those different saws and attachments I don't think I would know how to do most of this! I love it! Truly inspirational!
Thanks Robert. I appreciate the kudos but don't know if it is really deserved. I hope that this BA helps some folks a little. I really don't have very sophisticated equipment just a tablesaw, bandsaw, cheap belt sander and drill press. The rest are all $30-40 harbor freight hand power tools. There are lots of professionals using bunches of jigs and CNC equipment that are much more precise than I am. I think that where I might be able to help other amateurs is with tricks to get good results with modest tools.

Looks great Dan.
I enjoyed helping out with the kids at St. Jude's but (I have to admit) this bow is a pretty nice bonus for doing so!
Having the bow will be great, getting to watch it come together is making it that much better.
If you donate another bow next year, I may not be able to afford it after everyone has seen your work!
Paul, I'm planning on doing this every year, Lord willing. I only hope the next bows go for a good price too. I finished my last case about 5 min ago. Headed to the shop to spray finish on your bow and do some experimenting to see what arrows it likes. I just have to pull to my normal draw and then stretch another 2 inches to mimic your draw.

New bow needs a string. This one is 8125 with double padded loops. Red and black as per the eventual owner. Its a ten strand double with double padded loops.

This one came out right on the money. 1/2 inch over target brace height with only 10 twists. Rod Jenkins told me a few years back that a good string shouldnt require more than a dozen twists to make brace height. Keeps weight low.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa194/togo1987/20130710_181155.jpg) (http://s202.photobucket.com/user/togo1987/media/20130710_181155.jpg.html)
Now it needs some serving. First I mark the lowest point where the string could contact the shooters arm. then I go 2.5" over square for the top of the serving. I like to keep the serving to the absolute minimum to save weight and noise. It really helps if you have a cookie made by Ellie Creps and her mama for the St Jude auction while you work.

This leather sewing needle is perfect for seperating the string bundles and keeping the string from twisting as you wrap a tight serving.

I believe fishermans wool yarn makes the absolute best silencers available. Very light too which makes the string more quiet and keeps it off the shooters arm. I have been using this $9.00 roll for 5 years now.

I measure down about a quarter of the way from each end and seperate each bundle rather than between them. This keeps the yarn from moving and gives it better contact with the string.

The bow looks awesome and a great picture story. A shout out to my friend Horne Shooter who has given me good advice as I've taken the training wheels off of my archery. The Abowyers are flying like field points. Deer season can't get here quick enough!
