Title: Will bocote work as a power lam?
Post by: Zradix on May 01, 2013, 02:51:00 PM
Hey guys.
I'll be building an r/d BBI soon.
I'll be gluing in a power lam to keep the force of the grip's glue joint.

I have a pcs of bocote I could use for this.

Will the bocote work here without cracking/breaking?

Thanks

all right! got your wood ordered or found? I have no idea about bocote, but I'm glad you decided what kind of bow to break... err... build next!

in my novice opinion, any wood would work for a power lam, at least one like the one i used. its just to reduce the bend at the fades, and its sandwiched between backing and bow... so its not going to splinter or break or anything. you using bocote for the handle too?

I don't know yet...though that would be pretty..
I just remembered that I had a 1/4"x2"x24" piece left over from a gunstock project.

Thought this might be a good use for it..

I was thinking it would work too.
My whip has bocote fades that go right down to nothing..so I thought it should be ok.
..but that is a different type of bow..

Sweet!
Thanks Kenny!

I just read somewhere that bocote was about as strong as maple..just quite a bit heavier.

don't mind at all. everyone put out a lot of good information in that build along. I hope lots of people can use some of what I learned.

That is about all i have every used for the risers on my bows and so far "even with cut out shelves" it has never failed so it should make a good power lam.
