Title: Sapwood OK in riser?
Post by: typical2 on April 23, 2013, 10:14:00 PM
I got this block of Texas ebony recently and love the way the yellow sapwood looks next to the darker heartwood.  Can i leave this sapwood on for a riser on a Hill style longbow or will it cause problems?

Thanks
Eric

Using a riserblock with sapwood does not only look amazing it also saves you from preparing the block with an accent glue up^^

Here are the 3 blocks i have.  As you see i'm drawing them up to keep a good portion of sapwood.  I love the contrast but just wanted to make sure the sapwood wouldn't cause problems.  Wood workers typically avoid it.

I am making a bow for my good friend's wife.  She was born in Colorado and went to college and worked in Texas for a while.  I'm making her a bow with Texas ebony riser and Rocky Mountain Juniper veneered limbs. (not completely sure it is Rocky Mountain juniper but that's what i'll tell her.  Sounds better that way)

This is the only place i've found Texas ebony in riser sized pieces.

Woodworkers usually avoid it because in furniture the contrast is usually not appreciated.
