Title: Sealer for Ipe and Osage
Post by: Zradix on April 18, 2013, 02:43:00 PM
Hey Gang.

I've heard that Ipe and osage are fairly oily woods and are tricky to seal.

I'm a fan of minwax wipe on poly for my arrows.

Would this be a good finish for a bow using these woods?

Thanks

Wipe a coat or two of shellac on it. Then seal it with any sealer you chose.

Shellac eh?
Just some thin stuff?..  1-2# cut or so?

Why shellac if you don't mind telling me..
..dry quick over the oily stuff and gives a base for other finishes?

Thanks!

I used Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac in a spray can  to seal up a Rosewood bow once, I sprayed glass and wood. It worked well and I sprayed Minwax Helmsman Spar urethane over it   (http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt46/Robertfishes/pauferoriser-1.jpg) (http://s596.photobucket.com/user/Robertfishes/media/pauferoriser-1.jpg.html)

I haven't had any issues with Osage....rosewood on the other hand I've had to use superglue or shellac...

good luck

Exactly as you said.
It drys fast and anything will stick to shellac.
Just about any cut will work. I just keep some granulated shellac and mix a small amount at a time.
