Title: Clamps for BBO ????
Post by: Canadabowyer on April 10, 2013, 11:13:00 AM
Am going to try a BBO and am wondering. Can I use spring clamps instead of C-clamps as long as they are strong ones.I will be using Smooth-on.Going to the big smoke Saturday to buy clamps.   :bigsmyl:  Bob

I like to hold them in place with a few of either spring clamps or c clamps, in the center and the tips but then, wrap the whole length of the limbs with strips of rubber inner tubes as tight as I can.

I used a couple of quick clamps and a bunch of 99 cent from home depot spring clamps on my BBI build here:  http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=125;t=009703;p=7

worked great... my glue lines are very thin. I think i used 26 spring clamps and 4 quick clamps in total.

I think most people usually reccomend leaving the smooth on for glass bows, and use either unibond 800 ot TB3 for boo to wood or wood to wood. I used unibond and it was excellent... and not to expensive.

Unibond 800 works best because of its gap filling capabilities. I use c clamps for best results and crank em down good and tight. Great glue lines doing it this way .... Jmo

I use Smooth On and c-clamps. Smooth On has excellent gap filling properties as well.

For BBO I wrap the lams in shrink wrap to hold everything in place and to minimize glue running all over...Then I wrap the entire thing in inner tube stretched tight....paper thin glue lines, and no boogers to clean up.
Oh ya, I also lay painters tape or packing taper on the back of the boo first to keep the glue from setting on the back. it minimizes trying to clean up excess hardened glue fron the boo backing.

I hear about a lot of people wrapping their bows in plastic wraps of some kind to keep clean up down to a minimum. Doesn't the plastic stick to the glue and need to be cleaned up. How do you prevent/deal with this.

The plastic wrap doesn't stick to the glue too bad.
Just a matter of ripping it off.
I use it every time.

I use all c clamps, remember to pad the boo with something so the clamps don't indent it. The glue doesn't stick to the plastic. I just snug down the clamps, it doesn't take a lot of pressure when gluing two flat surfaces together 1 1/2 wide.

I moved from all clamps some time ago to less clamps and the inner tube rubber.

Picture is pretty cluttered but shows the ratio of clamps to inner tube. I use bicycle inner, tubes cut up.
Main clamps are at the center and where the spacer blocks are located.
Small c clamps for the area around the power lamination if used.

I've used spring clamps. The 99c metal ones from HD. I have a bunch.

I think the c-clamps are probably better becasue you can adjust the clamping force more easily. They're just alot more expensive. maybe $3-5 each or something.

If you don't have either, I'd probably try and find a bulk pack of like 20 c-clamps

Your right Roy. Key is to never set it down.

I'm under strict orders from Dana not to drink more than 1 beer in a day. I can get away with 2, but not the 8 I'd like to have.

Hey Bob. I use a roll of 3in. shrink wrap. The stuff will put a good deal of pressure on your lams if you wrap it tight and many times. I then  use just enough c-clamps to hold the bow to the form to get the reflex I like in the limbs.

Spring clamps work great and they are useful for a thousand other things in the shop.  I have a bucket full and use about 1/inch.  Try to keep the rubber on the clamps.  The bare steel will make little dents that have to be sanded out.

Thanks guys, I am going to get a bunch of the spring clamps and some of that wrap.
Pete, I am building the BBO so I can enter the primitive class at 100 Mile this year and to shoot at the North American Longbow Safari.  :bigsmyl:  Bob

Well Bob. I'm sure your BBO will put my bows to shame and I'm afraid that if you enter the primative class I will not be finishing as well as I did in the past. I don't mind as long as you let me shoot in your group. Barb is such a good score keeper. Teach your mutt to find my lost arrows and we will all have fun. BTW shrink wrap really works. You get even pressure and easy clean up. Its pretty messy to get on the wet glue but the results are worth it.

I just wrap plastic wrap around the bow before clamping it up. You can also put blue painters tape on the boo to keep glue off it.
