Picked up afew pieces of material yesterday to make veneers with. I've seen American Elm in bow before and they were really a knock out. I wet the wood denatured alcohol so the grain would show better.

The quarter sawn Sycamore looks like a light wood version of Lacewood. Amazing how the grain really stands out when wet with denatured alcohol.

Alittle stain on either of these woods should make the grain really pop...

Those are awesome, Troy.
You could dye those sycamore veneers red and really get em looking like lacewood. Always wondered why more domestic veneers weren't used though, there are alot of beautiful species.

I'm pushing my business towards more domestic woods. The price of Exotic woods has gotten unreal. Not to talk about finding them.
There are so many domestic woods out there that can look just as great as any exotic, I just can't see paying the price.
I also found acouple pieces of curly hickory. Just havn't had the time to clean them up yet.

Troy, I'm using some quarter sawn sycamore in my trade bow this year. It looks fantastic under glass without any stain.

but I did consider staining it with an oak, or similar light stain, just to accent the grain. I stained a test piece with light walnut, and it kinda dulled the grain instead of making it really stand out. But maybe that would change under glass? I also dyed some in a vacuum chamber for an accent piece in my brother's bow, and it came out really cool. The dye only penetrated the softer wood around the quarter sawn grain, and gave it a tiger-stripe look.
