Title: Woodland Inspired Bow
Post by: 4est trekker on March 31, 2013, 04:04:00 PM
I decided to try something new (for me) for this year's bow trade.  I've always wanted to build a short d-bow based on several woodland influences.  Here's the mock-up I did for me before tackling my recipient's bow.  It's made from red oak and is 58" ntn, has a tempered belly, side scallops, and holds 3/4" of reflex.  It pulls 35#@26".  I was really surprised how well a simple bow of this design shoots.  It's comfortable, fast, quiet, and extremely light in physical weight (11 oz.).  Couldn't get a decent full draw, as I was snapping pictures with my iPad.

That is very nice.
Did you get the basic specs from Jim Hamms book,"Bows & Arrows of the Native Americans"?

Thanks for the kind words, folks.  Yep, it's a board bow. And nope, I didn't get the specs per Jimm Hamm.  I had a little help from a fella over on Primitive Archer, studied the specs on some museum pieces...and had a little luck!  :)

Thanks, fellas.  :)   I had this one out shooting again today and really, really like it.  It shoots outstanding given that it's just a stupid-simple stick and string.

That is a great bow. And I have to tell you, it was your buildalong for a board bow that inspired me to get into bowmaking.
Thank you for sharing your skills and craftsmanship
