OK, since we are having a St Judes challenge, I'm designing a new 48" d/r longbow (shortbow?)
Anybody got any stacks for 48" beasts?
How heavy should we make kids bows?
I'll get some pics when I have something besides paper with marks on it! :biglaugh:
All your bows are sissy pants weight anyway so just make em like ya always do ole timer..
Or ya could make some 15 to 20 pounds ifin ya want.
Kenny, I think DVSHUNTER was gonna get some specs from a kids bow that he has. I hope he does - I was looking at maybe doing one too.
DVS said this: Kids bows seem to be all over the place. I make mine around 48 and up and the weight is usually somewhere around 15@15, 18@18, 20@20.
Roy, I wuz makin it for you, ya think ya can handle 10# ? ? ? Don't wanna get overbowed, son....
Joe, I made this one a pretty close 80% copy of my d/r. Will have to make a guess at stack/weight, but hey, 48" ought to draw to 15# 25" or so, I bet Roy mite be able to shoot it!!
Kenny make the weight as heavy as a Coors Lite bottle then Roy should be able to pull it.
You glass bow boys are always playen wif your stack. I think dats half the problem wif yunzs too:) Robbie ya just lost one of them Osage billets and pieces of boo ya had sent here:)
I've made a 46" RD and used .040 clear glass, 2 - .080/.001 tapers and a .020 parallel to make a accent stripe down the middle. Finishes at 22# and 20"
Thanks Rick!!
Sorry Kenny. I have been slacking on the measurements. I'm having a hard time getting a hold of something other than a tape measure for some accurate measurements. We real bowyers don't really need em.
Making em the same weight as a Coors can won't work cuz everyone knows Roy sips his raspberry beer from a straw.
Kenny..........
The kids bows I build are 48" T-T, 1" wide, 12" riser, 3/8 at the tips, .040 glass, TS .225 with .005 taper. 22# @ 20".
I also have formulas for 36", 42" 52" 54".
James
52 inch bow. 12 inch riser 1 3/8th at the fades 1/2 at the tips. 250 stack. 35 @ 25 inches
Get more bang for your buck, buy 2" glass and split it for kids bows up to 54".
I measured the bow today and posted what I could in the st. Judes thread. Hope it helps. I also agree with the two inch glass split for two bows.
Thanks guys, Appreciate the help!!
Was thinkin that James, actually gluing up a 2" one and tablesawing it down to about 7/8" wide on 2. Thanks!
Got my supplies for finishing the form today will report on how it works.
Am gonna build first one with clear glass so I can be sure of adhesion...
Freud makes a 7 1/2" thin kerf 60 tooth carbide blade that I use on my table saw to split glass for $20 at Home Depot. I tape 4 pieces of 2" glass together and rip it on my table saw, works great.
Kenny, I glue them up on a 2" form and bandsaw them in half. Fade thickness is about 7/8 to 3/4. Tips are about 1/2. I use .030 glass. 10 or 11" long riser. One parallel and one taper - usually a .001. I can't remember the total stack but I'll check my notes later and let you know. They tend to come out 15 to 18 or so pounds at 20". The profile I use is just a slight reflex. I'd be interested in buying a r/d template from you someday if you get a design you like.
Jerry
Thanks for the info guys, I will have to make a sheet with all the stuff I'm learning on it!!
Have the form done and parts made for it.
Can do a 50" off it, so made a guess and will pike as needed to get what I want.
Heck, it may be about the right size fer Roy.... 15#
Gonna glue it tomorrow and prob work on it next weekend, then its turkey time for 3 weekends!!!
I think dah turkey just posted:) LMAO
I need a test midget Roy, my draw is a bit long fer it...

Braced profile...(string is a fuzz short, brace is near 7", thinkin 6 to 6.5" would do)

It is still in need of some tiller work, it is 50" ntn right now, near 30# @ 22" so I came pretty close to what I wanted for a 1st try.
The hose and rope trick would have worked if my belly ramp curves weren't so tight. Next one will have a top form and the normal air hose deal. Got some fat glue lines, but the back of bow looks good.
Just need more pressure at ramps...
many thanks to all who gave pointers on stack!!
That looks pretty nice ole timer..
Nice bow I like it- looks like a big one^^
I havent worked with air hose so far but for steep fadeouts I love my rubber tube strips- It`s not that professional and a bit of work to tighten strong but has it`s advantages anyway...
Looking good, nice lam grinder. Bue--.
Good looking bow Bud. I need to get started on one for st Jude's.
Kenny: If it won't hurt the bow i would brace it a little on the high side. that way younger kids wouldn't have to deal with to much are slap.
That's a nice lookin' little bow Kenny.
I ain't namin' names, but that would be perfect some old timer I know here.
Now that's the way a longbow should look when braced and drawn. Not one of those things that looks like it hinges right out of the riser.

Troy
Thanks guys! Thisun ain't goin anywhere, it has fat glue lines...
John, check the first post... LOL
Troy, that is one thing that really bugs me about some bows is the hinge at fades!!
I was talkin' about the other old timer.
ME???? LOL
Looks great Kenny, nice work.
Not you Kenny. The REAL OLD TIMER.
(I wonder where I'm at on the list these days).
Oh, I goofed, was the first pic post!
Yeah, that one  But like I said, I ain't namin' names.
You are prolly on the most wanted list in the beershack now!
I mean shop...
